Question about ATM Security

I was in the shops the other day and went to use the ATM but forgot my card. I got thinking, why can't we just log onto 365 on the ATM as we do with our phone and withdraw money that way? What are the barriers, security wise?

Ulster Bank customers can withdraw without their card. Not sure if any other banks do

    From UB website..........

Get Cash is a function of our mobile banking app that lets you withdraw money quickly without using your bank card. It's great for those times, when you pop out during your lunch hour, but don't have cash on you.

    How does it work?
From the 'Get Cash' option within your mobile banking app, choose the amount of cash that you would like to withdraw
We then provide you with a secure cash code that will be valid for 3 hours (you can use the code yourself or use the option to text it to a friend or family member)
Then visit any Ulster Bank Republic of Ireland or EasyCash cash machine (find the nearest one using the 'near me' option in the app)
When at the cash machine, press the 'Enter' key and then follow the on screen prompts to get your cash
If the code expires, the funds will re-credit your account within 24 hours.

    To use this service
You must have an active debit card for your account
You must have at least €10 available funds to withdraw from your account
The amount requested must be within the daily withdrawal limit for your debit card
We must have your correct mobile number in our records
There is a maximum limit of 2 Get Cash withdrawals per 24 hours
Get Cash limits apply for this service which is a maximum withdrawal limit of €130 every 24 hours
Get Cash is available on Android, iPhone and Windows

This is a service provided by Mastercard or visa....it's up to the individual banks whether they let their customers use it or not

Why they just don't all go with basic fingerprint recognition is beyond me, no need for fancy phones or cards etc, more secure too.

    Are you sure about that?

They would generally have to chop off someones finger to gain access, with the other methods it might be as simple as guessing a password.

Or get an image of your fingerprint off something, a stolen ATM card for instance.

It's relatively easy to fake someone's fingerprint: https://www.theverge.com/2016/5/2/11540962/iphone-samsung-fingerprint-duplicate-hack-security

It's ok for phones, but definitely not good enough for bank account.

Plus your fingerprint data is stored locally on your phone, not in cloud. It would need to be stored centrally by the bank which is more cause for security issues.

Not to mention, what do you do if your fingerprint is compromised? Cards can be cancelled, PINs can be changed. Fingerprints...?

As folk have said, cardless is available. There are going to be a lot more integration with your mobile as a token in the future as well.

There are also some ATMs dotted around the world that have Iris recognition which is pretty cool.
