Most people carry 'banned' medicines due to ignorance

There are many medications that are prohibited in the UAE and travellers should not even have traces of these medications in their blood or urine.

If you are unsure of the type of medication that you can bring into the UAE then contact the nearest UAE Embassy in your home town or visit www.moh.gov.ae for assistance.

For instance, tramadol is banned in the UAE. But it could be prescribed by doctors from other countries. And carrying the medicine to the Emirates is criminal offence.

Most people who end up facing legal hassles are those who carry 'banned' medicines due to ignorance.

Below is a list of Controlled Medicines and Medications, registered with the Ministry of Health in the UAE and enforced by the UAE Ministry of Interior and International Narcotic Controlled Board (INCB).

These items are essentially available only in hospitals and in large community pharmacies, under the prescription of doctors. The Ministry of Health advises that unlicensed, controlled medicines can only be imported into the UAE through hospitals and not by individuals.

If for medical or emergency reasons one needs to carry any medicine, one must have a prescription from a UAE licensed doctor.

If treatment was undertaken outside the UAE, one must carry a doctor's prescription as well as a detailed medical report, both of which should be suitably attested by a notary public.

The following list shows the serial number, trade name, generic name and the form of medicine.
