Online music mag - do contributors get paid?

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum. My eldest has been asked to submit gig photos to an online mag. Strictly online, not a publication. I'm assuming this is a voluntary basis and won't get paid but he was wondering!! Anyone know?

You might get some better help in the photography forum. There are some knowledgable people over there.
