Getting hammered here with strong gusts in Waterford City. The loudest of the Winter so far but stats would say otherwise. Max gust 70km/h just now

    www.waterfordcityweather.com

That is crazy... It's so calm here in Limerick, not even a light breeze.

81km/h in Airport Mick. You have some shelter. Airport good location to get those gusts.

A lot of regulars left for a while and at that stage Maq not far off kept the forum going. Badly missed.
Well said, I hope he or she is reading. Neither melodramatic or pessimistic, had a good eye for forecasting too.

Yeah the airport is on the coast and well exposed so will always get higher gusts than my Waterford City suburb location.

Torrential rain Mountmellick. Strong winds, though eased somewhat since 11pm.

As heavy as what caused the November flash flood here. Here's hoping it upgrades to snow asap.

Arpege soundings for Celbridge later. Going by this not much hope of snow at low levels in Dublin.

2 am: Ahead of the front, winds southwesterly, deep warm saturated surface layer, wet-bulb zero around 800 metres. Rain.
    sondagewrf_301_450_8_1_1518480965.png

3 am: Frontal passage, wind now northwesterly, surface layer starting to cool but wb zero still ~500 metres agl. Lighter rain (upper layers less saturated).
    sondagewrf_301_450_9_1_1518481148.png

4 am: Further cooling and drying out, wb zero ~300 metres agl. No precip., thin layer of stratocumulus.
    sondagewrf_301_450_10_1_1518481404.png

9 am: Cold surface inversion but clear skies.

At 116 metres a better chance, but going by that still pretty wet stuff. It may be just a bit on the warm side of the fence, as has happened a few times with that model, but the WRF 0.05° is showing similar.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,235 ✭✭✭lucernarian

Worth noting that Arpege isn't the be all and end all.

One thing I noticed with interest is the strong wind reports from Waterford. Thanks for those, kind stranger! My hope is that this evidence of properly cold air digging in right where it needs to. I'm encouraged by the heavy precip reports and reports of snow near Limerick. It might not stick but it'll fall pretty.

If anyone can remember 31st December 2009 or March 2013, there's not much worse than cold rain falling while you see the snow pics from NI :)

Very sharp and sudden drop in temperatures at Durrow

You posted the WRF sounding images, not the ARPEGE.

Light snow at Gurteen at midnight, temp 0.5, dp 0.3, wbt 0.4. Pocket of cold air from Limerick advecting eastwards and now towards Laois (Durrow). Further north, though, heavy rain at Mullingar, temp 4.9, dp 3.4, wind southerly (pre-frontal). Knock currently temp 1.6, dp 1.2.

Heavy snow near tipp Town, sticking everywhere, least an inch at the moment

temp risen here again, 7C now. By the time temps drop here it will probably be too late for any lying snow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭lolie

Horrible dirty night out here, heavier rain than the 3mm per hour on the met eir radar.
Such a contrast to 24 hours ago, calm frosty and every thing coated in a nice white layer.

Edit: turned to sleet now, big wet flakes.

Turning into proper snow territory in Laois now

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

Interesting passage of the front here, freezing rain, then hail, then sleet. South Laois

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,235 ✭✭✭lucernarian

Not many posts from the pale right now. But then outside my own house, it really doesn't feel that cold and especially not compared to the almost-sleet shower i walked through in the city centre at around 9.30

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭dexter647

Snowing here now in my part of south west Laois with it already starting to stick...126m asl:)

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

Snowing and sticking in South Laois. 0.8c

No worry at all of falling snow in Dublin anyway as long as there's no precipitation.

Didn't one of the hi res models have Dublin in a very low precip bubble yesterday? Good call, though with the direction the front has been approaching so far you would expect the Wicklow mountains to keep Dublin mostly dry.
