If not, have there ever been suggestions or proposals to do so?

It's not a public road as such, a private company so not open to naming by the local authority. They could sell the rights to name it like, let's say Landsdowne Road now the Aviva Stadium or similar.

Does it need to be named after someone?
Havent seen any proposals for a name change.
And i dont think it having a private owner would mean its not open to being named. Easy enough to make an agreement for tunnel to be named after someone

I think they should name it after the repair crew that has to go in and fix the roof after all the oversize loads try to squeeze through .... :(

'The Tunnel' works fine for me. Given that there is only one.

No disrespect to Lynch, but were some gobsheens in Cork expecting more tunnels to be built under the Lee or something?

Technically, sections of the tunnel were named as they had to be floated into position before been sunk into position.

As they were technically craft/boats during the floating, they were given names (female) for maritime tradition (possibly law?).

Unfortunately, I can't find the souvenir brochure that was handed out to those who walked the tunnel prior to the official opening that contained this nugget, and so can't list the names.

I’m sure I have the brochure around somewhere as well but I can’t put my hand to it so here are terrible pictures of a couple of the named elements instead:

There was a big push at the time to name it the Limerick - Clare tunnel, but Limerick told Clare to feck off. Proper order.

No doubt there'll be a public vote, and Tunnely McTunnelface will win
