The 18z by the way isn’t totally outlandish as you’d expect a lot like it even from tonight’s bbc news 24 forecast with snow streamers followed by a possible slow moving front stalling in the east

I doubt it, personally mines rated for fairly low temperatures. Plenty of places where -9 is a regular winter occurrence!

One concern I do have though is what effect the cold weather could have on the batteries.

Sorry my sarcasm was lost in that post, the station will be fine temp wise.

But!!!!! Snow build up is an issue, Davis have a heater for the rain bucket but obviously not something I have so I may need to keep it clear so recordings are accurate.

2010 will be hard to beat, but as it looks right now it could certainly rival it.

Nothing sums up the 2010 spell more for me than the sight of people filling out of Midnight Mass in Cork on Christmas Eve trying to bless themselves with holy water only to find that it had frozen in the font into a block of ice. :D Good times.

If it was frozen then clearly it wasn't blessed right.

Yes they are here under different names. The GFS charts are too good to be true. They don't call it the pub run for nothing.

That's so good to hear they are still around.I hung on their every word and watched the streamers comming in from the coast as I'd no clue what one even was before that .

    A greater than even probability.

Best to make initial preparations for a serious event based on your requirements.

In fact everyone should be doing that over the weekend.

Proper prepping will not go to waste anyway. Will be all eaten or imbibed eventually if it is not that perishable. Worth it.

A 2010 survivor here, lessons learned. Water is essential, and other stuff that doesn't need cooking, had power cuts for hours here and frozen pipes too.

Black briar is definitely still here and has changed his name a few times, very knowledgeable poster

I was here under a less wholesome name in 2010.

I think 2018 could be the year where we commit 2010 to the history books.

Can I ask the resident experts on here when they expect the snow to move further west? As in, when should I be seeing my first snow shower haha

  • Registered Users Posts: 594 ✭✭✭Chicken Run

After losing water for over 10 days in 2010 we put an extra water tank into the loft...

Time to fill it I reckon.

In other news, the Rock & Road marathon in Kinvara Co Galway on 3rd is gonna be challenging !!!!!!

The resident experts can't answer that one.
All they can do is interpret the models when it comes to events like this.

But sure you can do that yourself, just run your mouse down the hours listed to the left of the map
    http://www.meteociel.fr/modeles/gfse_cartes.php?mode=2&ech=6

Click "suite" down the bottom of the list to view the distant future

It would typical if they all started to freeze and cut off water to hundreds of thousands of households around the country. I'd actually be surprised if they dont.

Was the 2010 event seen coming or unexpected in terms of snow.

Much like this event, the cold was seen coming well in advance but the snow is much harder to predict.

Am I rite saying the cold turned out to be a lot worse than what was seen coming.

There should be a frost cover inside covering the meter. It's a plastic spongy type of thing over the meter.

    Depends.

The day before it arrived we knew it was going to be pretty bloody cold

I think in 2010 the frost line was below 18 inches. Building regs require pipes to be buried 18 inches down but still alot of underground pipes froze solid.

Might not be a crazy idea to insulate the meter just in case
