Ideally one which makes cool sound effects when you are shovelling along the ground and can spit flames out the sides of it :D

I wonder could the national emergency broadcast system be used during next week like during Ophelia when warnings were scrolled along the screen.

I'm not sure we had such protocol in operation in 2010.

For people afraid of water tanks freezing in there attic,
Try get what's called a lambing bulb it's coloured red, puts out great heat and help prevent tanks from freezing, don't place near anything flamuble.
Even with lagging and insulation if the pipes freeze in ground the ice will spread up the pipes and freeze your tank

    https://www.triequestrian.ie/cms/cms.jsp?menu_id=30720&prodref=FORK27&proddesc=The-Falsterbo-Shavings-Fork-&category=pg_STABLE+528870&catdesc=Stable

Shavings fork - works well on the wet shavings and poop in my horses stable, and has been used to shift the snow in the yard too.

    ;)

I remember many a snowy day as a child, with a clatter of us kids sitting on the muck heap with two holes dug out to put our feet into. The heat off it was unreal with it decomposing.

incidentally there has been recommendations on horsey forums in the UK to use the warm freshly deposited poop off the muck heap to insulate pipes around the yard. So by that measure, do you think Irish Water would mind if I used it to insulate my water meter? Its meant to provide great insulation even when it cools down...

Don't forget your feathered friends during the cold spell, I will get some supplies for birdfeeders at the weekend. Also, keeping a birdbath or some shallow container of water clear of ice is important for them too. Use lukewarm or warm water maybe to keep it from freezing for longer of you cannot be around during the day.

good thinking. i've been lax the last while with the birdfeeders.

Aldi have several different types of wild bird feed on special from yesterday

The other problem is not getting paid wages for days one cannot make it off the mountain to work. I am already making budgetary allowances for that.

I have a heater on a thermostat because the hardware shop was out of the heat bulbs but said the heater is as good.
I've my doubts as the heater has to heat an entire attic space.

Where could you get a lambing bulb? Any farming coop?

Lidl do have garden tools and shovels in since yesterday, stock up on the birdfood, human grub, pet food and get a shovel. sorted!

Right guys we all need to add foil food containers to the shopping list. Y’know, the ones you get from the takeaway.

I’m making shepherds pie, curry, stew this weekend and putting them in the freezer. If the electric goes I’ll let em defrost, wrap them a good few times in strong foil and bung them in the fire.

If you haven’t got a fire or fuel for your fire. G’luck.

In all seriousness, you'll notice that snow shovels specifically have a flat blade and a wide body.
    https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/873583b4-8101-4141-a87f-87713372e804_1.27a479221a7ed9ce316af4ba69f432af.jpeg

These are great for moving loose snow. But pretty crap at anything else. If the snow is compacted, you'll need another tool to break it up. And you can't use it for digging a garden or moving coal or anything. So it'll sit in your shed for another decade until the next snow event.

The standard pointed shovel that a lot of people have, is good for lifting and moving stuff, for breaking up compacted snow, and you can use it in the garden afterwards rather than languishing in your shed. However, it's designed for digging and moving from soft ground. If you're shovelling snow from a driveway, the pointy bit can wreck the driveway and the shovel.

What you actually want is a wide-bodied digging spade. This is a best of both worlds that has enough capacity to move snow, but has a flatter blade that won't destroy your paths and driveways, and is great for breaking and lifting compacted snow.

If you leave a cold tap in the bathroom running at a trickle, would that not stop the freezing process?

Have a pile of turf in the shed, about 10m long, 12 foot high. Should be at least 6 years supply

Put that on your dating profile, now's the perfect time. The women will be flocking to a man with them kind of statistics.

I don't believe that as the water to the tank could freeze and you end up with an empty tank

Also you are not trying to heat the whole attic just the area of the tank, the theory is the heat from the tank will flow down the pipes stopping them from freezing, lagging helps to keep the heat in

No. Running water does not prevent freezing. What it does is reduce the pressure in the system and allow for expansion, making pipes less likely to burst when they do freeze.
This is not really necessary in your attic tank system since there's plenty of space in the tank for expansion.
This is really only necessary in taps that are directly mains fed and where the water pipes run close to the surface or are otherwise very exposed.

After burst pipes, the second biggest cause of flooding following a big freeze are unattended taps (in holiday homes, sheds, etc) that have been left open.

1211 Met Update outlook, plenty of warnings coming next week

It will turn progressively colder from Tuesday onwards with severe frosts and with snow showers becoming more widespread. Some disruptive accumulations are likely, especially in the east and southeast. Met Éireann will be issuing snow/ice warnings.
