Snow shovels are wonderful for use around the garden, in between our snowmageddon periods. Tidying up leaves and hedge trimmings is much easier with a snow shovel to hand.

Yellow for now as just issued, expect Orange to Red as we get to the start of next week.

If you leave a cold tap in the bathroom running at a trickle, would that not stop the freezing process?

I can only imagine that the government will will this cold snap as an example of why water charges are needed because of the damage it might do to pipes around the country.

Advisories arent official warnings and are yellow by default.
    Expect red alerts eventually.

    STATUS YELLOW

    Weather Advisory for Ireland
Exceptionally cold weather is forecast for next week with significant wind chill and severe frosts. Disruptive snow showers are expected from Tuesday onwards, particularly in the east and southeast.

As far as I know the theory behind leaving a tap going is that you leave the mains cold tap at kitchen sink trickling and that prevents the main supply from the road in to the house from freezing thus keeping the full system going be it mains or the attic tank.

The school my daughter goes to & the school bus will not run if there is a Red Alert Status.

Just about to go on a rant about Met Eireann's lack of warnings!
I work in a large manufacturing plant and people are complaining about the cold now and have no idea of what's coming next week. Probably need to talk to the manager to see if there are plans in place to stop pipelines freezing (have km's of them)

If we get to a Red warning, nobody should be taking risks just to get to work or school - forget about them and keep yourself safe. Heed the fact it's a red and stay indoors - unfortunately the consequences of ignoring this were seen all too clearly during Ophelia.

Most people I’ve mentioned this to seem to think it’s going to be nothing more than the slushy northwesterlies we had earlier in the year. It’s fairly hard to emphasise how different and prolonged this could be in comparison (assuming it doesn’t downgrade in the next few days).

AFAIK red alert = all schools shut.

What ever about next week being a shock to people system, it'll be tough on wildlife too. perhaps people could remember to leave a little something out for the birds?

People comparing this to the late snow storm of 47 can only mean one thing......

Just like in 47 Cavan will win the All Ireland :D

I've heard they are comparing it to the 1982 spell. C,mon Offaly :-)

12.50 radio forecast playing it cool (so to speak), not getting excited yet really.

How far is the snowfall expected to reach inland or will it just be the East and south East coast. I live in south Cavan so hopefully something reaches us.

We didn't freeze in 2010 which was good, but plumber advised if worried to open attic door slightly (which seems to defy the logic of super insulated attic . . .

Our water treatment system and pump is in the garage, didn't freeze in 2010 but the resourceful dad invested in a red lamp which provides no level of heat to stop that. Put it on earlier this year on a timer and the cats who also sleep in the garage were really happy. Only allow dog and kids indoors.

What you actually want is a wide-bodied digging spade. This is a best of both worlds that has enough capacity to move snow, but has a flatter blade that won't destroy your paths and driveways, and is great for breaking and lifting compacted snow.

like the ones in Lidl since yesterday :D

Reading people saying there was a change in the air yesterday had me rolling my eyes a bit.
I thought it was more a case of when you knew there was a change coming you 'noticed' a change. But today on the east coast there is a definite feeling of change. The clouds have a more yellow/orange tinge, the air is very dry, in fact my young daughter commented on the road being 'so bright', outside her school. What she was noticing was the road is actually not wet for the first time in months! Have cooler dry air would have to impact on the stickability of the snow when it arrives I'd imagine.

If it gets bad let the poor cats in!

Would you believe I am just back from the Pet Shop. I have stocked up on Nyger seed, mixed seeds & peanuts. Snow or not the birds will be having a picnic in my garden.

Cheapo grated cheese and raisins is what I put out for the birds, (soak the raisins first).

    Scoffed in a few minutes.

I buy a few bags of the grated cheese and have lots of dried fruit leftover from Christmas.

    You feed cheese to birds?

    That's very continental

  • Registered Users Posts: 61 ✭✭Snow angel

I’ve often fed them porridge oats

    Ooh la la!

Oh and dry uncooked porridge oats are scoffed also. Must not be cooked, just raw and dry. Cheap way of feeding them too.

My birds get a mix of cheese, fruit and porridge oats. They are spoilt little feckers!
