The M50 was bad during this evenings snow, the lanes disappeared, and it was very slippy on the fresh snow. Visibility was poor, ad I had problems with blocks of ice building up on the wipers, lifting them so they wouldn't clear the windscreen.

I'd advise every one to charge all their phones etc until the last minute so we can still get updates from the red areas tomorrow. Lots will lose power.

Yes, you might have to go to work.
I'd hate to need to get a pregnant wife to hospital in a blizzard only to find it was closed cos of the blizzard.

People who don't work in essential public services however don't really need to be going out in a potential blizzard. The Taoiseach is advising people to avoid potentially serious weather conditions. What more information do you want?

After all my preparation,my gas bottle is frozen, nearly full bottle as well. Its a gas bottle Flo Gas for Hob inside. A work mate said that it most be frozen Any ideas what can be done. Wrapped a jacket around it ,but nothing else i can think of, never happened before ( obviously in West Cork its never cold enough) and never knew it could happen. Had a quick look on goolge but nothing helpful.
Can you defrost it with a say a hairdryer . and would it be safe.

4 of us are booked to fly Dublin - Edinburgh on Friday at 12.35, returning Monday 5th, for Edinburgh v Munster on Friday night (which probably won't go ahead now anyway). It's looking like we'll be spending the weekend at home with bread and wine:). Mail from Ryanair tonight:

Does this have a regulator?try tapping it a bit . I’d say the issue lies there . I think gas has a very low freezing point so wouldn’t think it’s actually frozen

Happened me before, snow got into the regulator and then froze....unclip it and a kettle of boiling water will sort it out.
Cover it then for rest of cold spell..

Its not actually frozen. I think it is in fact failing to boil - in other words, the liquid gas has got so cold that it is no longer turning to gas gas, if you know what I mean?

Daz may be on to something though, it could be a tiny bit of moisture frozen in the regulator but if its Butane, its also likely that it is too cold to gas. Happened to me (also in West Cork) in 2010. Changed to using propane and havent had any problems since although propane is not as readily available and you need a spanner to change the bottle.

Only suggestion I have is if you can take off the drum and bring it in to the house for a few hours to "warm up" and then wrap the thing up when you put it back outside.
Don't leave the bottle inside overnight or while the house is unattended and watch for a smell of gas and keep away from things like a fire etc.
There's a reason that gas bottles are fitted outside!

Thanks to eveyone for the answer. Very helpful and panic over. Learning loads about weather and now gas bottles.

Planning similar route to get home tomorrow. There's a yellow warning until noon for a good bit of my journey, hoping to get back by 3pm before the next red one kicks in an hour later.
They're main roads, so they should be cleared and gritted regularly and take it fairly handy in the bends. No travel warning against it yet from what I can see but check for updates before leaving and use vigilance when driving.

Meanwhile Public Sector off no bother. But then again we pay for that. Not that I begrudge anyone a couple of days off from this.

AFAIK, schools won't open with a red alert in effect. All schools in Munster are closed till Monday.

I live up a hill. There is a slightly steeper than average bit of road just before my house. A couple of hours ago I heard a fairly constant car engine sound outside, with a bit of revving. Looked outside and there was a car that couldn't make it and find traction. Before I could put on clothes to go out and see if there was any way to assist, they had decided to back down the hill.

I have been in that situation once myself and would have been having kittens at the thought of what might happen if the car started to slide.

I dug around in the shed and found a pot of de-icing salt I bought in lidl about 8 years ago and had a go sprinkling some of it on the obvious ice that had caused the problem.

I just went and had a look and there is now a good stretch of exposed road surface so it looks to have done the trick. -5° C with a bit of a breeze - brrrr!

Pour warm water on it and shake the gas bottle. Same thing happened me today

Can 99.9% guarantee they will be by morning, dept of education shut all in Munster and Leinster till Monday due to red alert, can imagine they will do the same early in the morning for the remainder of schools.

Serious, life-threatening conditions tomorrow 'tis pretty much a curfew from 4pm Thursday due to 'blizzard whiteout'.
