Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Are the conditions bad there? Im not too sure whether it is worth my drive to work or not. Id have to travel just over 60km to get into Watrford.

I'm just outside Waterford City and the roads are quite bad. I have decided I'm not driving anywhere today but I think if you're sensible and safe and know how to drive in this weather, you should be fine.

As the poster below says - don't forget to factor in getting home later on.

We have had over three inches overnight, personally I wouldn't not when you have to travel that distance.. will you be able to get home again later even if you can get in? Saying on local radio to stay put unless absolutely necessary...still snowing here now

I would say travel for critical workers only. But that's just my opinion.

Public being advised to stay indoors from 4pm. I would err on the side of caution.

My concern would be later on, particularly if you're going to be on the road between 3pm and 6pm because I would imagine it'll be pretty hairy during those hours and then, whatever those hours bring, could leave the roads in shite.

Lost power for four hours overnight in north county dublin so keep your phones laptops charged up. Laptops are a good backup “battery” for charging your phone.

What are the odds on widespread power outages from today's event?

Thanks to Kermit, MT and the other very knowledgeable folks on here, I've had batteries / battery packs / candles etc sorted this past week, in anticipation, but it'll get mighty cold here if the heating goes!

edit: Also thanks to the above, my colleagues missed the panic buying the last few days, and my boss made the call early yesterday to cancel appointments for the rest of the week, in spite of his bosses insisting we were to come to work or take annual leave (they relented only when overruled from on high).

Here in South Donegal this morning there is a general feeling of WTF ! We have bright sunshine and haven’t seen any snow. Now all schools are closed. There are no buses running. 90% if the charts I’ve seen show the storm not even reaching Donegal. If this doesn’t have a ‘cry wolf’ result for Red Warnings I don’t know what will. Bemusing.

Question- has any1 bought them yaktrax or any other brand of ice crampon thingys? They are all up in the onscreen ads the past few days! Cheap enough too.
Might buy a pair to have again or would they be a waste?

I bought a cheap pair of these in Lidl a year ago or so, first time to use them - they're fantastic. Was able to walk on ice no bother at all on relatively flat/low-incline surfaces. Also went up a hill and no problems at all. Will definitely be getting a few more for the rest of the family next time I see them. The ones from Lidl are rubber so you can fit them on any sized shoe (not kids though probably)

The Grizzly Adams generation will be fine. Its ironically the snowflakers who may be found wanting in this regard.

Chaos (understandably) in the airport this morning. Understaffed but huge credit to front line staff from DAA and airlines for managing the situation. Only a handful of flights made it out and unfortunately my one was one of the ones that got cancelled in the end.

Feet up now and weather watching for the next few days.

Stay safe out there - some roads treacharous and visibility impacted by wind blowing around surface snow.

Folks Im posting in this thread because I dont want it to get lost in the other thread and need some expert advice. My sister is due to get married tomorrow in Dublin 10 at 1pm and then travel to Cabra Castle in Cavan straight after. Obviously she absolutely does not want to cancel but is clinging on to any hope that this might not be as bad as forecasted.

What are the models telling you guys about the situation we are in?

Its not whats underfoot that's the problem. Its the visibility. The vast majority of people are hearing the advice but not listening.

Local Radio has just said that 150 homes are still without power in the Kinsale area. Hopefully, they can be connected before Emma hits.

When feeding the birds, remember to spread the food far and wide.
Some birds will take over and bully other smaller birds away when there is snow/ice.

Things remaining manageable now due to water, electricity and internet still running, do we think there’s much chance of the electricity etc going when the worst hits?

People in Kildare, Cork, Kilkenny, Drogheda who have posted pics of significant snow- you need to realise that this is light compared to what Emma could drop later, risk increasing exponentially the further south you are.

Heed the warnings. You ain't seen nothing yet.

O.H at work just wish they would shut up shop and let them home..

No offence Pauly, but you seem like you are trying to win the "most unanswerable question" competition.

This depends on where you are, how windy and snowy it gets, how vulnerable the lines near you are to falling trees, and blind luck.

Nobody can tell you anything but, its gonna be really windy and snowy as bejaysus.
You either have your prep done or you don't. Anybody who tells you how likely you are to lose power is making it up.

ESB have said that they hope to have all homes reconnected before 4pm today. Fair play to the ESB crews - I don't envy them being out in this weather. Crazy amount of snow here around Kinsale.

I'd be tempted to walk out with plenty of time to make it safely home (allowing a bit extra time to allow for potentially worsening road conditions). Once the snowstorm hits you're unlikely to be able to continue driving anywhere. The National Emergency Co-ordination Group news broadcast yesterday evening said it would be suicidal to be on the roads. People caught in snow storms in England have been stuck on the road in their car for over 17 hours.

After the event I'd also consider looking for a new job - I wouldn't be happy working for somewhere that shows such total disregard for their employees.

Went for a walk down to Coliemore Harbour (Dalkey). Wind is unreal with waves crashing onto the adjacent road. Don't even want to think about the possible conditions tonight (its a full moon also). Maybe 55-60 kt gusts possible? Up the road here at 40 m asl there have been light snow showers all morning with the odd heavy burst. Snow depth is very variable, about 0-8cm due to wind but have 10 cm in my sheltered front garden. Expecting at least 10mm of liquid equivalent ppn tonight and tomorrow - but looks more on most models. May be some slight marginality on very exposed coastal areas at times but I reckon that even I will end up plastered with snow tonight

Even the ukmet have called Red for the SW, and they are 'particularly stingy' with issuing red warnings.
It said on the TV box the red for snow in Scotland's central belt yesterday, was 'only the 2nd time that ever happened' using their colour warning system.

The don't give colours for Ire, but can be considered as being red for this evening.

Emma is about to pass their SW shortly, and head straight NNW to impact the SE Ireland beginning in T-4hrs.

As if it wasn't a pain driving in this weather already I'd like to give special mention to a member of our local ethnic minority who almost ploughed into a car as he decided to drive along the middle of the road so as he didn't have to slow down as he swerved into a driveway. An asshole of the highest order, zero consideration for other road users.
