Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Another journalist murdered - Slovakia

I saw today another investigative journalist was murdered along with their partner, this time in Slovakia
A Slovak investigative journalist and his partner have been murdered in a suspected assassination linked to the journalist's work.

Jan Kuciak, 27, and Martina Kusnirova were shot dead at the weekend at home in Velka Maca, a village 65km (40 miles) east of the capital Bratislava.

It was "most likely related to the journalist's investigative work", a police commander said.

Kuciak had written about alleged tax fraud involving luxury apartments.

There were protests last year over Interior Minister Robert Kalinak's alleged business dealings with a property developer. The minister denied wrongdoing and an investigation into suspected fraud was dropped.

Sad stuff, that at a time when journalistic standards seem to be slipping and there are so many hacks just linking to some twitter crap, that the ones interested in serious news and trying to expose corruption and crime have to put their lives on the line.

    I read that this morning.
He was threatened back in October but weirdly when he reported it to the prosecutor it was ignored according to reports.
He was also investigating money stolen by the Italian mafia so he was dealing with very dangerous people.
Government putting a 1 million euro reward is a serious bit of money to tempt someone into talking.
Amazing how in countries like Mexico being a journalist is regarded as one of the most dangerous jobs around.
Also, another journalist murdered... who's the first one?

Read that earlier - sickening. Investigative journalists have brass balls.

I thought you were referring that another journalist was murdered in Slovakia.
Hadn't thought of the Maltese lady.

You should look up Mazan Dana, or Nicola Caliparia, or Giulia Sgrena and see people being shot dead because they're dangerous.

Russia is one of the deadliest places for journalists ,even more so than a warzone especially since putin came to power ,
Mexico and Columbia were always dangerous places for journalists since the naro wars started by in the late 70s early 80's

Great example of a pointless piece of news that you never would have heard about even five years ago.

Slovakian tax fraud may not have made the news internationally only for the fact that this murder happened but it serves to show that a journalist investigating tax fraud in their own country was killed doing their job investigating the crime.

We’ve had the same here just over 20 years ago with Veronica Guerin. Her story regarding drug crime in Ireland would probably not have been newsworthy in other countries, but her murder for following it up probably was. So much so that a film was made about it.

Astonishing really. Compared to some of the counterparts basing an article about some mouth breathers' reactions on twitter.

The problem with this is that Fico (Prime Minister) is strongly rumoured to be involved with some of the suspects.
He is living in a penthouse of one one of the dodgy property developers alledgedly.

Well made the international news, the deaths of journalists in Russia are so common they don't get reported outside of their local area much more
