    Hey, need some advice...
    I would like to know what exactly constitutes as bullying in the workplace? and what can the victim do about it?
    Sorry or such a brief question just don't want to go into too much detail

    Use of devaluing language and comparing the victim unfairly to other workers especially in public.

    Repeated and consistent over a period of time, I would say more than a week.

    Setting exceptionally high expectations and rates of work and performance higher than others in the same wage rate and rank.

    Demanding certain work practices or transactions or dealings to be kept secret from other workers or bosses, always a bad sign.

    Taking away a persons dignity and self worth with inappropriately intimate or intimidating gestures and tone of voice, these should be avoided by senior staff at all costs in a professional setting.

    Personal comments about a persons appearance, size, gender, age etc... look up the code on discrimination for tips on what to avoid commenting on.

    The victim should write down every item and incident and dates and times, they should seek allies and assistance from fellow employees who might also be victims of the bully. Then if there is a succession of persistent acts of aggression bring it to nearest boss and up the chain to HR if necessary always remembering not to skip the chain of command as you do so.

    Bullying can take sooo many forms in the workplace it’s impossible to list them all.

    You would really have to describe what the issue at hand is. After all, what one person considers bullying another can consider an over-reaction.

    As you don’t state what sector you work in try the Health and Safety Authority for info on bullying - http://www.hsa.ie/eng/Workplace_Health/Bullying_at_Work/

    If you could be a small bit more specific whilst maintaining your confidentiality completely folk here might be able to give you a better steer.

    Start recording incidents you feel are examples of bullying in a note book.
    Write the date the time the location the name of the personnel involved and the names of anyone else who was present, plus the main points of what happened.
    If you end up making a complaint these notes will be vital.
    Other then that, unless you can give us some examples of incidents you feel constitutes bullying, then there isn’t really a list of DOs and DONTs outside of the General “treat others as you would wish to be treated”.
    For example, do you think that your supervisor is critiquing your work too harshly?
