What does it look like on the TV? Could just be a passing heavy shower? I guess if it's heavy and the outfield is soaked, that'll cause problems.

If it is rained off, what does that do for Ireland ?

Can we still get through tomorrow ?

Read somewhere else that if Zimbabwe get a point today to overtake their NRR we'd need to win by 35 runs tomorrow or successfully chase in 42 overs.

Not sure how accurate that is but haven't bothered working it out myself so I'm willing to accept it at face value.

    According to Cricinfo

"12.45pm The two umpires converge and call for the covers. The groundstaff drag the covers onto the field. The anxious Zimbabwe players troop off. Ireland and Afghanistan won't mind this. If this game ends in a no result, the winner of tomorrow's clash between Ireland and Afghanistan will qualify for the World Cup alongside West Indies."

Excellent. Let it rain so and then a straight shootout tomorrow to qualify.

UAE innings finished anyway at 235/7 after 47.5 over by the looks of it.
Zimbabwe have been in difficult situations a few times in this tournament and, apart from WI, have always gotten themselves out of them. Not really expecting anything much.

Its a pity really. Naveed had scored 22 off 10 deliveries in 10 minutes. Raza and Cremer, who were by far the most economical bowlers for Zimbabwe had no more overs left. 235 off 47.5 is about 245 which is respectable but not daunting.

It is a shame that qualification for a World Cup could be coming down to the effects of weather for Scotland the other day and for us. Doesn't seem right to play that long a tournament and have the entire result possibly decided by weather.

Covers are coming off and UAE's innings is done

Is there still a threat of rain? If Zimbabwe have to keep ahead on D/L they might start chasing too hard. Hopefully!

How many overs do they have to bat for a completed game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 924 ✭✭✭lambayire

    It's 20

20 overs to constitute a match.

How would the rain affwct the scoring? Would it slow things down in general?

Zimbabwe will need to chase 230 in 40 overs, not a complete given I guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Early wickets and hovering dark rain clouds would be nice.

The wicket is dry and obviously the bowlers will dry the ball before bowling so there won't be a huge effect around the wicket. After that it depends on the condition of the outfield. If there are big puddles as has been suggested, that will slow the ball, but if the grass is just slick, the ball will zip off the surface. It could also be very poor underfoot for the fielders.

If there are puddles I would imagine the game would be abandoned normally but the umpires are probably terrified to make a decision that will scupper Zimbabwe. I can't say I blame them.

So im guessing the hope is zim try and stay ahead on dl and forces them to loose a couple of wickets early? Really have to fear a strong opening partnership as well incase its rained off after the 20.

Dodgy DLS working in our favour. Zim get 53 less balls but the target only reduced by 6 runs

He was due up but they brought in Peter moor instead and he got 2 off his first ball. I presume they are going to go down swinging. This is going to be very exciting. 10/1 after 3. great start for UAE.

Oh I know, but if Zimbabwe just tick sensibly along to 20 overs without losing many wickets the game will be over with more rain.

You just don't know sometimes what way to hope when it comes to D/L, it's made a fool of many a team that rely on it

Start at 5.48 to get the gist of it for anyone who doesn't remember the game. Boards doesn't allow for time stamps with embedded Youtube videos afaik.
