Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The Pardew Effect

Alan Pardew was at one time the next big thing, but wherever he goes he seems to leave a trail of destruction.

So do people think he is a good manager, or a good coach or is he just a bluffer hyped up by the media?

p.s. He could teach Jose a thing or two about throwing players under the bus

Alan Pardew got lucky with the short lived Alan Graham Carr effect at Newcastle, otherwise what has he done really?

Everywhere he goes it seems to be short lived, used to get an initial bounce now even that does not happen, it was like the kiss of Death when West Brom appointed him. whats worse he actually makes Hodgson look half decent

I think he'll be seen as Championship level from here on when he takes them down.

Alan Pardew was at one time the next big thing.

Anyone who believed that should be admitted to a psychiatric hospital. I could never see him at a top team even when Newcastle were doing well it was a fluke chance for him & the club.

I think he’s been seen as Championship level for a long time by most people.

Most managers have their thing that they’re good at, whether that’s coaching, Man management, motivation or recruitment. I honestly have no idea what Pardew does.

You replace Pardew to Pulis to fix his mess. Not vice versa.

Found out, but he's English so he'll keep getting jobs.

If you start a Pardew thread you need the Gifs.

That's harsh on Hodgson. He's got a good track record at a certain level. Look at the job he's doing with Palace and has done with the likes of West Brom and Fulham as well at various stints in Scandanavia and the Swiss national job.

Pardew is just a clown who i have no idea how he's gotten the Premier League jobs he's got.

I still can't believe that contract Newcastle gave him in 2012, he's still got 18 months left on it.

Poor manager on the merry go round now as well. Crazy that West Brom hired him!!!

He seems an ok enough chap when being interviewed but as a football manager there's something of the David Brent about him, absurd and misplaced self-belief and sense of entitlement that he should be operating at the top end of football.

    He's been ****e since charlton.

Wasn't there some story at the time about Ashley and himself and a gambling debt or something.....pure spoofer, has taken a fair few quid out of the game all the same.

There would be a certain irony of The Baggies go down and Pulis gets Boroup through the playoffs

He's never been great but has to be extremely difficult to take over a Tony Pulis squad.

I have never seen him take responsibility when things go wrong it’s always the ref, the injuries, the players, the transfers. The annoying thing for me is I think he could be a good manager if he wasn’t such an arrogant nob.

There’s already a definitive thread on here regarding Pardew. Ultimately the Newcastle fans on here know a deadbeat manager when they see one!

Good fun looking back at that and seeing those who defended him. Would like to get their views after two sackings since his Newcastle days

    Well I was right
Magpies will be looking back on Pardew as a golden-plated era, Mike Ashley is the issue and whoever goes in will be selling the best and holding station mid-table. So a manager like De Boer is unlikely whereas Steve Bruce is quite possible.

I hope someone like Eddie Howe doesn't get suckered into jumping ship.

Please note there is a big difference between golden and golden-plated.

I remember at the time they said that was a genius move By ashley beauase england would likely be looking for him in the following years and then there would be a big pay off to ashley from the english FA.

After taking Newcastle to wholly unexpected heights (amply demonstrated by subsequent manager after manager who failed to get them anywhere near Europe, indeed some combining to take them down to the Championship) he did the same with Crystal Palace, a cup final and highest place in the league. Of course, he could not maintain either club in a position way beyond their usual level, and paid the price. He has not resurrected WBA, but doing it with 3 of the clubs whose fans have expectations far greater than their trophy cabinets should allow was always going to be tough.

He didn't maintain either club at a level that would even be totally acceptable for their supposed 'levels'. One single good season at a club is not the sign of a good manager.
He's good for one thing, a fast start. He's failed to do that even at West Brom. He might get some sympathy for the difficulty of this job in particular if he wasn't such an odious human being. Good riddance to him

Let it go. Pardew should never have been appointed manager as big a club as Newcastle.

A championship side before him. A championship side after him.

He certainly did not replicate the heady days of 1905-1909.

A bit like Pardew, Hodgsons reputation is not based on fact, look at his away record when he was at Fulham, (perceived as his best ever run as a manager), they had a terrible away record, probably a good coach but not a good manager imo

Yeah that away record totally shows up the fact he got Fulham to a final in European competition.

You know he was bringing them down? Hence the sacking?

You know he left Newcastle in December 2014 after winning Manager of the Month for November and when they were in 9th place?

You want to have another go at that post or happy to stick with it? It sounds like a very bad guess. Or else extrapolate how 9th in the table is " bringing a club down".

I can appreciate NUFC fans being delighted with his failures, now they can only dream of 9th in the table and are embittered, but I've never heard anyone argue that 9th is relegation form...

Ah you're right, he left for Palace. I "misremembered" :D

They were in 9th with Hughton before he arrived too. One good season with Newcastle and one with a Palace. A failure for the rest of his managerial career in the top flight. He'll do fine in the championship

Yes. You evidently did when you made the ridiculous claim that a 9th placed team was going down.

    He left NUFC in 9th.

Palace finished above them that season...and the following, when NUFC were relegated.

    Yet another failure for him

How long before he's in another high paying football job?

Must be the best profession in the world, being an English football manager, fail and get another big paying job. No other job like it.

Nah ask Graham Potter,Chris Wilder,Gary Rowett,Paul Cook etc. where these offers are?

They aren't on the managerial merry-go-round that's why. Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche, Chris Houghton had to get to the PL on their own accord before drawing plaudits. Chris Houghton going steady enough the first time he'd a team promoted was famously sacked to be replaced...with PARDEW!

Pulis, Hughes and Lambert aren't English either :D

Surely we'll never see him in the top flight again after this? Says it all that wba are pretty much relegated and sacked him anyway, obviously they didn't want another relegation on their hands this time next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

If his ego can take it, hes going to have to drop down to the championship to get a job in the summer, hopefully because hes a very unlikable human.

I think WBA probably made the right call too, they're pretty much down and they wont be a huge loss IMO but giving a new manager a full summer to get the house in order, they could challenge to come straight back up.

  • He leaves the club in turmoil, isn't this the second or third time hes done this?

He'll be back by Halloween. Most likely with Swansea, Brighton or West Ham.
