Hi Guys.

Been a very long time since i've had a building thread

1. What is your budget? 1500
2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming only
3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No
4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No
5. Do you need a monitor? Im not sure yet (1500 euro at the moment doesn't include monitor)
6. Do you need any of the peripherals? No
7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes
8. How can you pay? No problems
9. When are you purchasing? End March/April

I want a PC that's quiet (closed looper cooler?) and powerful enough to run 3440x1440
Cool case Something like the Thermaltake View 71 but it's to expensive), Intel and Nvidia powered

It would be brilliant to get something well below by budget without skimming on the performances

To be honest im not really blown away by the components like I want a fully modular PSU, I want a 1080 TI, closed loop cooler but it's probably because my budget isnt enough.

How about we stretch it to 2000?

I don't mind waiting till end of April to get the parts

Zen+, Zen 2 is 2019. The reason it's plus is it's just a minor shrink and optimizations and Zen 2 is supposedly architecture changes.

CPU Cooler: Honestly, while liquid coolers might look better aesthetically (though that's debatable too), most of them cannot beat a big tower Noctua cooler, in either temps @ 100% fans or especially in low-noise.

Plus that's not even forgetting that a tower will provide some cooling air for the VRMs, while a liquid cooler provides nothing.

PSU: "Semi-modular" just means that the motherboard 20-pin & CPU 8-pin are cabled while the rest of the cables are modular. If you still want aesthetics, PSU Cable Extension kits are cheap, effective & available in many colours.

However, unless you get a really good deal (or just want to spend more) I see little reason in buying, say, a Corsair RM650x over a CSM650W
The total power draw of even an overclocked system like that is below 350W max, so you wouldn't even hear the CSM's fans (they only ramp up after 70% load)

1080Ti is overkill unless you're trying to game at 1440p high-refresh IMHO, although even there a 1070 Ti / 1080 is probably sufficient.

But yeah, what's killing your budget is the general increase in prices for RAM, GPUs & SSDs in the past 1-2 years

I could never bring myself to spend €650 on a mid range graphics card. Let's face it those 1070's should be about €350 by now.

Looks like I'm stuck with a 970 for a while yet.

Have you considered second hand? You could stick a cheeky bid on this.

Were they that cheap? Seems so long ago. Raging I didn't get 1.

This 3.5gb memory on the 970 is really limiting now. I have to run pubg on low textures to not go over it.

Don't think they were that low but I remember thinking my GTX1070 for £349 from Amazon was 'decent' value.

What prices are they starting at now...£530 or something equally stupid for ones in stock.

CEX have a GTX980Ti on offer for €430....no idea what model it is (one thing I hate about the website, no way of knowing what model card it is) but considering that comes with a full 2 year warranty it doesn't seem like the worst deal going at all.

edit - and unlike other components they actually test graphics cards as well so reasonably safe

Not when the market is the way it is though. I'd take a 980Ti at €430 with 2 year warranty over a GTX1070 for €650 considering there's very little between them.

I agree on principle that it's utterly ridiculous but with the market the way it is....

Changes:
i5-8400 -> i5-8600K; might as well!
AIOs are a false economy; a decent tower cooler is within 3C of the best AIOs at 33% of the price.
Motherboard: You can trim a few £ here.
Case: I see no reason to buy the £210 BeQuiet when the £118 seems to offer the same layout. Up to you though.

£919.98 for a GTX 1080ti, my nose is bleeding looking at that. I have a 980ti from years ago and I can't remember exactly what I paid but it wasn't that much.

Mining really is killing the market for gamers.

The OP mentioned Gaming only.

The fast majority of games only run on 1/2 cores. 6 cores is wasted if he's only going to be gaming.

A 4 core CPU with faster clock speeds would serve the OP better than 6 slow cores.

OP, i'd suggest an older chipset like "Intel Core i5-6600K". Much Faster clock speeds.

I'd be inclined to still go for 6 cores as a means on future proofing. A few years back quad core wasn't really a requirement but now games are starting to utilise that architecture more.

That is quite untrue. A good quad core at high clockspeed is still OK granted but even a high clocked dual core with HT is very substandard now.

There are also plenty games that run better on more cores/threads and this makes a bigger difference if gaming at >60fps.

I think if building a brand new gaming PC now, an i5-8600K is a good spot.

Largely true, but there are exceptions. Sff cases bring aio’s into the fray, where two considerations become prevalent....reduced airflow, and space. I’ve a 7700k sitting pretty at 25c in a sff case, one which I’d struggle to fit in a large air cooler. I’ve another pc upstairs with a 6600k and a blower 1080ti inside an sff case, and again there’s an aio looking after things exceptionally well. So while you’re correct, it does depend on the form being built imo.

Practically all modern game engines use 4+ cores well, usually at least 8 these days.

That's just for the game. If you want to run background processes or stream you want some overhead. A processor isn't just bought for the here and now either. I buy processors for at least a 5 year cycle.

There's also the target framerate to consider. If you're buying a high end gpu like the 1080ti and a 144hz+ monitor then you want both high core count and high clock speeds. The 8600k is the cpu to go for from a pure gaming point of view in that case. The 8700k if you can make use of the hyper threading in other programs.

If you don't need crazy high 144 frame rates or can't drive them with your card and you don't intent to stream then something like a 4 core ryzen or i3 would be just fine.

Dual core even with hyper threading is simply a no go in too many games. Sure the statement that the majority of games run on 1-2 cores is true, you're talking about a platform that has over 20 years of games on the store. If we're talking about modern games and games in the future then 6-8 cores should be the target with a minimum of 4.
