Yeah, it's arguably the first "concept" album cover and inspired others to rethink album art.

It was the first album to print the lyrics in full and the studio staff on the back and as a gatefold was rare for pop/records. It also had "free gifts" in the form of cutout moustaches, badges and such. The inner sleeve was a psychedelic artwork where normally they were either blank or adverts for other records of the time. The cover art and design cost around 60,000 euros in today's money, when contemporary cover design was more like a 1000 euros. The British artist Peter Blake brought the cover to life based on a thumbnail sketch by McCartney. Lennon wanted to put Hitler in the lineup but was vetoed.

What I like about how they thought was while every other band went psychedelic with cover art on the back of Pepper(the Stones being the obvious one), for their next album the Beatles threw that out and went the other direction and released the "White" album(cooked up by another artist Richard Hamilton and McCartney).

Blank save for the band's name embossed and a serial number. The intended "joke" and commentary on such things that it was a "limited edition" of two million. It came with a poster and four photographs.
