Dalymount Park - a creaking old stadium in Dublin....

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bh7Z60MH8E0

Not bad what some imagination & initiative could do

Looks great but a 6k capacity.

Point im making is about the proper development of a stand to incorporate better facilities & make it operational 7 days a week - library coffee bar etc etc

You would want to be renting some books amd seeling a lot of coffee.

It is also planned to use it for both shelbourne and bohs and looks like dublin City council are behind the development, most likely under some urban regeneration plan.

We look to be getting €100+ million for North Quaus, recently €19 million for city centre urbam renewal, the chances of us getting funding from government for anything like the above, slim to none.

Yea sure all libraries are privately owned & ran

Don't think the plan was to ever have us playing there next year. Think 2020 or 2021 was the plan.

Yep it did. Paddy joe took a strong stance on walsh park locally, then used every excuse under the sun why WP couldn't be used.

    Then kildare happened.

It's a great venue! You can travel return to Dungarvan on the bus for a €10
and have some food and drinks afterwards! A nice day out!

Interesting article in Sunday Independent today by Dermot Crowe..WIT have offered the site, facilities, the whole lot to Waterford GAA for development of new stadium! Build 1 (stadium) get 1 (centre of excellence) free!

The GAA have turned it down though! Want to go with Walsh park! What planet do they live on?
Why did the clubs vote for Walsh Park?

Forward thinking to the fore again. I bet Walsh Park doesn't happen or a heavily diluted version gets built waaaay behind schedule. A "money just resting in the account" job.

Building out of town seems to be generally recognised as bad these days.

I don't follow soccer much, but I know plenty of fans on another forum. Several of their (mostly, but not exclusively, UK) teams used to have stadiums in the centre of town and moved to new ones away over the last 20 or 30 years. All say it was a bad decision in retrospect.

I've been to a few and when you are in town you wouldn't even know there was a game on. No sense of ocassion and people just bolt on home straight after the game. Then there's getting to the stadium if you dont have a car...

That could be describing Walsh Park itself. A disaster of an area. Not handy from anywhere. No large public spaces nearby for any atmosphere/sense of occasions. Worst of both worlds. Urban while still detached.

So what do you suggest. Flog Walsh Park for a housing project and move a new site closer to the city center...north quays maybe....convince the saudis to forego their mosque plans for a 20,000 All seater stadium...?

Lets not forget that we played Kerry in Walsh Park in the 2003 Munster Hurling Championship. The place might be a kip, but, it was used in this century too.

Walsh Park offers no benefit as a "city" stadium. It's far enough out of the way and with little to no facilities in vicinity, you might as well go the whole hog and move to the outskirts of the city altogether. They'll patch it up and be back to the same question in 5-10 years time with another half baked fix.

No offer of land from the WIT according to the N+S

  • Registered Users Posts: 532 ✭✭✭thesaturdayman

    According to the former Mayor who was a the meeting there was an offer link below;

    https://soundcloud.com/wlrfmwaterford/former-mayor-pat-nugent-confirms-he-attended-meeting-on-feasibility-of-a-gaa-stadium-at-carriganore

lots of questions here, why are county board hiding a report from club members & general public that was issued in July & then are championing both Walsh Park and Fraher field (or forget it) after it?

There is something not right about the whole thing, very murky & misleading.

why did WIT tell news and start that there was no offer of OWNERSHIP of land.

If Croke park wont finance something not on GAA land then the county boards hand are tied.

I have the distinct impression that the big hurdle for Waterford County Board/Munster Council/Croke Park is the lack of ownership of the site in WIT.

They seem not to have even explored the length of lease at WIT or any other terms of going that route.

WIT are obviously prepared to talk business, but not the county board.
