Never got a handle on the clues thing. I know we can have another guess, but doesn't "queen 2" mean he only expects us to get 2, but if we have a guess from a previous clue we can throw it on the end there?

You can always guess once more than the number that you are given with your clue. Traditionally used in the manner you mention but not restricted to it so you do have the option.
