    Well guys,

I am involved in a social network start-up but none of us know really where to start. None of us are really tech guys but have a very good idea. Cant give details away for obvious reasons. Does anyone have experience setting up a complicated enough website? How does one go about it? Does anyone know possibly a freelance web developer or a good web development company? Any help would be much appreciated?

Get a tech guy. You need to ascertain how complex the idea is or even how viable it is. It could be a days work, it could be years. It could be available 'off the shelf' or it could require some specialist skills.

This is not the right attitude to have. The best ideas come from feedback quick and early. Talk to someone worth talking to. They won't steal your idea because a) its likely been done before, sorry thats the truth b) they'll be too busy or won't have the skills / resources themselves to do it or c) they'll do it for you because they see the potential. You have nothing to loose. Ideas are, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, worthless. Ever heard of MagicCab? Probably not. It was bigger than Uber at one point. But we all know Uber because of their execution, not their product. The best teams in the world just had the right mix of people. Steve was the marketing guy, Woz made it work. There were hundreds of 'Apples' in Palo Alto, Jobs just sold it best.

In short, talk your idea out with people who can give you an unbias and raw opinion. You'll be so glad you did, it could literally save you a fortune.

How does one go about it

Depends on what you are trying to do. Hugely. You may just need someone to make a site that shows content, nothing dynamic. You might need someone to make a huge machine learning system, costing thousands in server fees. Comes back to my earlier point.

Does anyone know possibly a freelance web developer or a good web development company

UpWork, Fivvr to name two. There are plenty of people who will pump out a site for $100 in a day. It will be terrible, it won't work and you'll build it five times over. What you need to find, by LinkedIn or the best networking you can muster, is someone who has done something similar or works in a similar industry. Get someone from the business side and someone from the tech side. Get them to sketch your idea out with you, get a 'shopping list'. As an analogy, you need an arhcitect to design the house and an engineer to put it together, before you pay the builders to lay the blocks. Find your architect first.

Myself, I have a background in Electronic and Computer Engineering, along with Business. I work mainly with systems that buy and sell peoples time in the leisure industry, but also commerce in the Fortune 500 scale. I also teach online both techical topics and user analytics If you'd like a few mins of a technical ear, I'd be happy to help you out. Just shoot me a PM with your details.

    What’s your budget OP?

It will cost you nothing to get quotes on implementing your idea. Just arrange a few meetings and get prices.

There might even be templates. Feel free to message me if you like , or just post here. I have many years web app dev experience (but no interest in taking that kinda work so I can give you impartial advice).
