thanks corkie, reading through all that. One other question. Is it dual active sim? where i can have two sims operating at the same time.

Have not tested personally, but the China/Global Versions has dual sim for LTE use.

Dual SIM Android phones: Dual standby vs dual active

Basically, the new Redmi Note 5 [Global/China] AI Dual Camera is a beefed up variant of the Redmi Note 5 Pro, and it brings a few important improvements, including dual 4G LTE and VoLTE support, Android 8.1 Oreo, and Quick charge 3.0 support. Let’s check what else this new phone has to offers and how is it different than the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Quote taken from here, can't remember where I last saw it mentioned.

Don't know if it active or standby.

It uses Dual Standby, see reply below.

Redmi Note 5 [China/Global] uses Dual LTE Standby!

Redmi Note 5 China Supports Dual 4G stand-by while Redmi Note 5 Pro doesn't. In addition, Redmi Note 5 Pro only supports VoLTE in one SIM at a time unlike Dual VoLTE can be used Simultaneously in Redmi Note 5 China.

Note: Dual VoLTE in Redmi Note 5 China means VoLTE are supports on both SIM but not at same time. Snapdragon X12 modem of Snapdragon 636 doesn't support Dual VoLTE on dual SIMs, only Snapdragon X24 modem and X20 (Snapdragon 845) has this feature. Hence, when both SIMs are used in Redmi Note 5 China, one SIM supports VoLTE, the other one doesn't, it can used simultaneously since Dual 4G standby supported.

    From: - http://en.miui.com/thread-2047988-1-1.html

@robie5 Hope that answers your question, probably bigger reply to using "Active" in your question.

Got the following reply from Honorbuy to my query about the lack of a cutout over the front facing camera (and light sensor) Guess I just need to choose between sharp pictures versus screen protection!

    Hello,
    Thanks for your feedback.
There are no holes for front facing camera and light sensor.
But they are transparent to protect for the front facing camera and light sensor.
They will not influence the usage of the phone.
    Please don't worry.
    Have a nice day.

Grassey, can you just re-check one thing for me...you got both black and white protectors, yea?...can you check that not only is there an opening for the front camera and light sensor, but that the glass is actually drilled thru on both?

Just want to be sure it not just that a transparent opening is there but that the camera light has to travel through the glass protector, resulting a softer image and light glare from the glass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,178 ✭✭✭corkie

@captain_boycott On mine it is NOT cut out (honorbuy) but just clear class. It doesn't bother me, since I don't take much selfies!

On the one that came with my case it is actually cut out.

Sorry maybe I misunderstood. The black/white part is cutout, the clear glass element covers the lens/sensors

Just bought another one for the wife.

GPS was faultless tonight going the back roads from Dublin city centre to Kildare. Much better than the RN4.

    4g is also constant.

    2 questions from me

Is the camera good (I'd settle for half decent I know I'm not going to get Samsung quality camera like I had on my note 4) but one that allowed the kids to be identifiable in low light would be nice to have

And is it very long and skinny? The skinny bit gets me more than the long bit. Is it very narrow? I feel some of the new phones are like looking at a letterbox they're too skinny for me!

It's the width of my RN4 but a bit longer.

I'm setting one up for a guy tomorrow night , so I will let you know what I think. The one I bought was advertised at 8mm thick , but there is a case linked on Post no. 291 , and I'm sure this would thicken it up a bit .

^^^ If you want GCam Ports on custom rom, choose your Gapps package carefully.

    Nokia Pro Port: -

Magisk Module Mi A1 Port <<< Suppose to enable dual cameras on custom roms.

Took two snaps tonight of the similar scene.

    Gcam Port Picture.

    Nokia Pro Port.

I think the Nokia Port wins as you can zoom in on the sign and read the title.

Both taken with default camera settings on (16:9) 9.0 megapixels.

@ImARebel Hope that answers your question about camera's and welcome to the thread, direct here I believe by a post in Chinese phone thread. I'm on a custom rom, but you can see the quality of photo from the above.

Edit: - @South took some pictures and shared here.

I thought, I shared more camera comparison videos before in the thread, maybe in the main Chinese Thread, check youtube for more.

That's great info corkie thanks so much

I'm not up on the custom roms bit (I get it, I just don't plan doing it)

Have I read it right, I don't need a custom rom to use the Nokia pro port? (sorry if I've misunderstood!)

Sorry ports should work on MIUI as well, once your rooted and enable Camera2Api.

But you already have MIUI camera app, so you would not need the Mi A1 port.

Hm, I think I'll stick with the camera app that comes with the phone, I don't want to chance messing with it. I don't think I've enough knowledge for rooting or custom roms

I've flashed a tablet before when it went belly up (I'd nothing to lose by trying it) but not sure I'd be willing to risk a brand new phone, lol

Overall, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is undoubtedly a more powerful phone than the Mi A1. The phone also excels in the camera department except for the portraits, display is also more immersive, and it dominates the Mi A1 in terms of battery life as well.

So the only department where the Mi A1 stands out is the design and ease of usability. So, if you don't care about the software and the design much, then Redmi Note 5 Pro is what you need.

Ordered Tuesday at 9am from honor buy and phones arrived today at 11am. Just over 48 hours. Great service.

Ordered both the 3+32 and the 4+64 versions for a total of €384. Happy with that.

Now to find a nice case.

Received the Note 5, 64/4 today. €214 delivered (I added the Nillki or something case which I wouldn't recommend because it looks manky so I could have saved a few bob there) from Goldwater using a link someone had up here. I bought it to replace the Lenovo P2 I smashed last month and it seems well able to do that from first impressions. Nice phone. Cheers for all the posts on here, helped me make up my mind after a ridiculous amount of research. Hopefully the standard rubber/silicon/tpu/whatever case will do for a while anyway.

If ordering the phone, look for the Global Version, not the Indian version with the pro extension on the name.

Phone comes with a soft TPU case, so can protect your device, until you get a case.

For a case, i have this one from aliexpress, comes with Glass Protector or you could order one shown in the honorbuy link above.

The outside of the phone is the same across Global/China/India, so accessories are compatible.

The Mi A2 (even if has that name) is only rumored and speculative posts, at present, xiaomi have yet to confirm the existence or any plans to release it.

    That said: -
The Mi A2 is expected to be the global version of the already-released Mi 6X, so while there won't be any real surprises here, there's one big differentiator that'll make the Mi A2 stand apart from its sibling — its software.

Similar to its predecessor, the Mi A2 is expected to ship with Android One. In addition to fast updates and regular security patches, this also means a completely stock build of Android instead of Xiaomi's own MIUI interface.

Last year's Mi A1 was announced in early September, so that's likely when we'll learn more about the Mi A2.

So it would be October before available to buy!

These are all the phones Xiaomi is releasing in 2018
Do you know what phones Xiaomi's coming out with this year?

Agreed, the Konsmart is a simple back case, albeit in two parts, which, I'd say offers a bit more protection than the TPU, but not as much as I'd like, coming from a supcase on my last phone ..

The GKK is quite slim, and not sure how it will stand up to repeated falls, but should offer reasonable protection for now..

edit: actually, it wasn't the Konsmart I received today but the third (!) case I had ordered - will take Corkie's word that the Konsmart isn't worth waiting on,,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,178 ✭✭✭corkie

@UsedToWait Konsmart is similar to the other case you got, Two parts, TPU rim with harder back cover bur not as stiff as GKK. No protection on front of device.

What are folks opinions on the gel cover that comes with the phone?

Fits snugly and does not hide the phone but would it offer much protection in a fall? or should I invest in something better?
