Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I don't think its specific to teachers, but were they female ? as much as high speed late night crashes are usually men, texting while driving is usually women. Every day I'm stopped in traffic looking around and any woman under about 50 has the phone out tapping away, a lot of them continue while traffic is starting to move off.

I think the RSA really needs to step up the game on targeting people using a phone while driving and it very much needs to be targeted specifically at women just as previous ads have been targeted at men.

Targeted ads at men are "supported by statistics", whereas similarly supported targeted ads at women are "sexist", remember.

    Both female

One was animated in the car ,head bobbing back and forth nearly knocked me down

Another just staring straight at the screen on the steering wheel ,pulled up and nodded for me to proceed

Why can't these knuckleheads just make the call before they drive off

Because the things we're not allowed to do are the more attractive option.

Anyone recommend a good place to forge and rebuild an engine in the south, preferably Cork/Kerry?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,657 ✭✭✭CIP4

Surprised to see the new A6 is coming with a 1.8TFSI 190bhp engine for the petrol option would have assumed it would be 2.0TFSI like rest of the models I thought the 1.8 engine was dropped a few years ago at this stage or is this a newer version of it I wonder.

Finbarr in Fionnsport is an engine builder. Does race engine builds and all he be able to do that I say no bother.

Well you learn something new every day, I didn't know Finbarr did engine rebuilds but it doesn't surprise me that he can!

Finbarr would get my vote all day long to do something like that, one of the best mechanics I've ever come across - not for nothing do I bring my car from Dublin to him despite there obviously being BMW specialists up here as well.

They did a 1.8 in the previous A6 as well. They might find a few buyers this time as the backlash against diesels continues, even in Ireland diesel is down to 56% of the new market compared to 74% a few years ago.

    What are the 14, 15, 16 volvo s60s like?

I test drove one over the summer with a view to change and thought they were a step down comfortwise from my own 2006 S60. Nice enough if a little small inside. I had an S90 yesterday for a while, I'd hold out and see does one come into your price range over an S60 TBH.

Still waiting in Insurance limbo to sort out my accident from last weekend, of course the third party is fighting it and even trying to bring charges of Dangerous/Reckless Driving against me  From where I was stopped at a red light, onto the roundabout when it went green and then he hit me :pac: With no CCTV footage or witnesses I think he's just grasping at straws.

Going to have a fight about value of the car too I reckon :o

But is there any proof the light was green when you moved off? If there's no witnesses or evidence that works both ways. Not sure if you have a dashcam or not.

I often have to use a junction where multiple cars sail through after the red light, I'm sure they'd lie through their teeth if there was a collision.

No proof of that either really I guess bar our own accounts of course, reckon it could go 50/50 unless they can prove the damage to mine was caused due to him at fault.

It's unfortunate but you may be correct with the 50:50.
After all, it really is a "he said she said"...
Maybe it's a good example of a reason (if you don't already have one) to get a dashcam and fit it.

Car accidents - without witnesses except for the two involved of course - are notorious examples of where people lie to save their own skin.
Have you contacted the Gardaí and given a statement etc? Hopefully the other driver's story can contradict itself or something but generally insurance companies love 50:50 settlements as it means 2 driver premiums get loaded instead of one.
Personally I am a huge advocate of dashcams, anything to get one over on a) insurance companies and their enforced monopoly and b) scammers like the guy who hit you.

Biggest lesson..... Dash cam get one it's a life saver.

I had many over the years, one week after my 1st one failed I had a crash of course no witnesses.

Then recently had one where it was a crash 4 cash and luckily had a working dash cam but had now failed.

The most recent crash it saved me from a big case and he lost big time.

Yeah I'll certainly be investing in one straight away once I get the car or new car on the road, whichever happens. I'm hoping their assessors will see the areas of damage and see that he hit me which should help my case.

Was the crash at a signal controlled roundabout?

If so I fear you may end up with a 50:50 unless there is any evidence presented either way. I don't know if knock-for-knock still happens these days, you might be able to get yours fixed easier that way as you're in the trade I think.

Sorry if my post read a bit like "should have got a dashcam", wasn't my intention.

Good luck with it, lovely car.

Yeah Signal Controlled alright, my only hope I'd say is the type and area of damages to all three cars, mainly my own and the third parties. Yeah I'll be able to sort it handy enough, been offered doors for cheap and the bodyshop I use will do me a favour sorting it out.

try find 2-3 old ads from old colonel cars, might help argue the value up. Other sides insurance will try pretend your driving a 520i with cloth seats.

That's the plan, Pistonheads is great too. There's a lovely 540i Touring after popping up there I'd be tempted by if I get a good enough value and it goes my way if I don't go the repair route.

One of my dipped bulbs blew last night, it was straight into the nearest filling station, new bulb got, fitted. Parking up to driving out in under 5 minutes (yes, all covers back and all), back to normal. I have another bulb at the ready should the other one go.

Which also reminds me, I've more tail lamp bulbs to replace... I've gone through a lot since driving this car!

The bulb that blew was a fancy halfords motorbike spec one with more light, reduced to €1 a piece. They were put in the car exactly 8 months ago and got used a lot throughout. Think I got my euros worth out of that one anyway! :D

    QUATTRO

May show this to my Dad he is obsessed with bloody Quattro since he got his A4 sorry I showed it to him at this stage :pac: I drove it and infairness if you drive it really hard you will feel the difference but day to day tipping around you wouldn’t notice much difference. But to him it’s completely changed everything and basically how did he get this far in life without driving a Quattro.

Lads a Garda was behind me on the m9 earlier in the rain. After a while she turned on the lights and pulled me in, said do you know how fast you were going the roads are very dangerous. She took my license and came back and said I'll get a letter and to pay the fine in any post office and that will be the end of it. She said i was going 130(Must've matched her speed to mine )

I wasn't shown any speed gun or ticket. What should I be expecting in the post?

Wouldn't you notice it accelerating out of a bend even? Or by not needing to lose quite as much speed going into one...

There is no comparison between driving a quattro car and a FWD similar model, esp at this time of year with the weather we're getting.

Ah I am not that bad. He goes around and anytime he see a nice Audi all you get it oh that’s a lovely car but it’s not a Quattro. Surely in Ireland there must only be about 5% that are.

Haha not sure probably well I suppose you can’t get a 1.6tdi in quattro so does rule out some of the smaller engine. His A4 is 177bph diesel and I didn’t think I would ever say this but the SE suspension let’s it down a bit it’s just too soft. I used to hate harder suspension now I am converted :pac: it’s an unusual car very weird spec as it is an SE yet has loads of unusual extras that most S-Line didn’t even come with.

I don't do FWD myself. Any FWD VAG I've driven with a bit of life in it suffer from awful torque steer. I see a nice Audi the first thing I do is have a closer look to see if it's 4WD. My reaction when it's not is 'nice bus, pity it's not a quattro'.

On a 2.0TDI A6 - which most are in the land of Paddy - FWD or quattro just doesn't make any difference in the real world other than sap more fuel consumption in my own opinion having driven both.

If you're rallying your diesel A6 then you bought the wrong car...:)
