A very valid point. Looking at the Dublin sunrise times, currently the latest sunrise is 8:40am between December 26th and January 2nd. Earliest sunset is 4:06pm between December 9th and 18th. Not moving the clocks back in winter will leave us with light until between 5 and 6pm in the evenings, light at 8:30 am till November and after February, just giving two months with dark mornings.

If anything they should move DST to move the clocks back on the second Sunday in November and move them forward on the second Sunday in February, leaving them forward the remaining 9 months of the year.

    Yeh.

It’s pretty weird that it takes so long to get out of winter time. Today’s length of day is similar to September 17.

Yes, and if as happened in late 60s early 70s, when they stayed on Summertime, the sun rise in Dublin would be 8.17 in Dublin and 8.28 in Galway.
That's the point that is being made.

However, I assume that if a change is made now it will be the end of the clocks gong forward in March so Winter hours should be unaffected.

Maybe but Irish standard time is actually summer time. Maybe we’d stick with that. The British won’t be in the EU.

Not that the EU will change this. If anything they will move to a double summer time.

That would pretty much mean switching to CET, no?

All year dst - Middle of winter sunrise wont be till 9.40, sunset 17.06(east coast). Summers will be same as present, sunrise 4.56, sunset 21.57

All year gmt- Middle of winter, same as present 8.40, 16.06. But summer will be 3.56 sunrise and 20.57 sunset.

I don't mind the hour change at present, far more important things in life to worry about. If they do stop though i hope they stick with gmt becuase winter mornings would be depressing. Could be 10am before it gets bright on a cloudy and wet january morning.

I get you. WHen I lived on a North Sea island, it never went really dark in summer and it got exhausting. Invested in blackout curtains..
