Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Random thought that puts me way off the phone. So it has a notch right, ok bare with me, I completely understand the logic of a notch: push the screen all the way up and put your sensors etc in the normally empty centre of the staus bar..........but using the logic of maximising the screen why the fu*k go with a front fingerprint sensor and have a bezel across the bottom just for it? And still go with on screen nav bar. So strange. The logic is strange. Should have gone with rear sensor and push the screen all the way down.

There are phones on the way with a notch at the top and bottom, so you can wait for these to be released:)

But there are two reasons I understand to keep the from finger print reader.

1)Cost and issues to get it at the rear of the battery (There is no wireless chip either, so currently no electronics at the rear of the battery?)

2)You can unlock you phone without lifting it (not possible with rear finger or face).

Also you can set the notch to black background, which maintains the symmetrical appearance of the phone, but keeps the info in the notch area and off the main screen.

I purchased today ... An s9+... Thanks for all the input...

In the end I've been without a phone for a few days, wrecked my head not having a phone. Got paid today, today was always the day I was getting my new phone...and there are no Huawei p20 pros in the stores for sale so my mind was made up for me... thankfully... I'd still have been stood in the shop humming otherwise

    And....... Are they unlocked!? :pac:

I'd say you won't get an answer to this unless someone has SIM cards from other suppliers than the one they use.

Slightly off topic, is Carphone Warehouse the only B&M shop where you can buy new unlocked phones ?

(obviously you can get unlocked online, but my sister in Dubai was curious as there you can buy unlocked phones everywhere)

Nightline have an estimated delivery between 7 and 9pm tonight for mine. I've just had to reschedule it for tomorrow as I won't be in tonight. Kind of annoying as I live near the depot.

Anyway, how are folk getting on with the handset?

Missed delivery at 14:00 from an post, Some of us have to work:D
    Evening Delivery scheduled for 18:00

I do have another problem though, this is supposed to be my birthday present from Wife/Daughter which is not until next week.

I need to see if I can sneak it out:o, but I cannot fully switch over until its back in the box and I open it on B day:eek:

But I guess I can use during daytime in work and night time, to start getting it set-up etc, before returning to box again to be wrapped:)

How would a p20 lite compare against a Xiaomi Mi A1? Particularly in terms of camera?

My Xiaomi arrived today, but I just seen the Tesco Mobile offer of €80 upfront and €30/month. I already pay €20 on credit each month so the phone would only cost an extra €10.

If I thought the p20 lite was a step up I'd sell the Xiaomi unopened.

I asked the same question before and was given the following response
    https://www.gadgetsnow.com/compare-mobile-phones/Huawei-P20-Lite-vs-Samsung-Galaxy-A5-2017-vs-Xiaomi-Mi-A1

They are all broadly similar based upon the above link.

The Galaxy A5 only has 3GB RAM though, which might be an issue if you like to use lots of apps at the same time.

The P20 Lite is the newest, has the biggest screen and is running the newest version of Android so it probably the best buy between the above.

16MP on Huawei instead of 12MP camera on the Xiaomi

It is now removed from the Vodafone website, so it looks like it.

Not sure if they would bring anything back. The mate 10 still has a free gift available, but much lower RRP gift.

Sales will slow down on this or a price drop soon, no one will pay full whack without getting the 400 euro headphones free. In my opinion.

I'm in no hurry, I've a Pixel right now, but I should have pulled the trigger on the P20Pro earlier this week.

The fingerprint reader can also be used in place of the 'soft keys' which frees up even more screen space.

"Off-Screen Navigation Key: This allows the home key to be used with gestures, as so: press to return home; swipe left or right to open recent apps; tap to go back. As the trio of typical Android soft keys won't be on the home screen it means more space to enjoy your content, without less need to reach up across the phone screen during use."

I've been using it like this so far and it works quite well.

You need to enable notifications on the lock screen somewhere. It needs to be done per app...Haven't got that far yet :)

You need to check the notification settings within the app. Then go to the phone settings, applications, and then select the application and which notifications you want to change.

You'll be able to sell your A1 for what you paid or very close to it. I was looking at one only yesterday as similarly a lady on boards was looking to sell an unopened one.

All Tesco phones will be locked so no 4G for anyone interested in it.

Haven't had much of a chance to mess around with the phone yet but the battery life seems to be excellent. Was at 10% last night when I put the phone down. Picked it up this morning and it was still at 10% :)

    Very impressive!

Those with the pro.. Does it come with silicon case in box? Is there a pre installed screen protector?

Yes it comes with a clear silicon case that is actually quite good.

There is a screen projector in place, but it is just the type intended to be removed when opened.

I still have it on until I get the chance to put on the glass protector I got, hopefully tonight.

No idea how good it is to be honest.

There is a screen protector pre installed under the temporary one. So make sure to take it off before you put on any tempered glass protection.

Yes, I'll take a look and see if there is another under the temporary one before installing.

If there is one there I presume it's plastic. Would you just leave it there for the time been or would it be best to switch to the tempered glass straight away?

Yes used today with no problems. I was actually going to post to say it's much better at auto connect to car than my s7, but that could be an s7 issue which also used to drop connection.

So far I am on Wi-Fi only (hotspot from s7) and I have tried Spotify, maps and directions with no issues.

I do not have SIM installed yet to try calls.

I'd leave it to be honest. I've one on my one plus 5t and it's fine. I'm really careful with phone. Never put it in pocket with keys etc.. I've dabbled with phone protectors a lot and it can be very hard to fit them properly.. Some won't work with cases etc

I've read that the pre installed screen protector is prone to smudges. Seems ok so far from my limited use.

I've never added a tempered screen protector before but I imagine they could be difficult to get right. Although they should offer more protection compared to standard one.

The silicone case provided is fine, but it doesn't give sufficient coverage to the camera lenses so i'm going to pick up a huawei flip case when they are in stock.

The flip case does look nice but sort of defeats purpose of finger print sensor and face unlock. The silicone one doesn't protect the camera when lying flat?

Is the version from networks here dual sim?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 304 ✭✭practice

No, the one I got from Three is single SIM only; the space for the second SIM on the tray is not available to use

Yeah, guess you can unlock it with either method, once the case is open. I like the idea of using it with the Always on display and the (limited) notifications you can get along with answering calls etc while the case is closed.

Just an option, i'll probably get another one of a different type aswell and see which one i prefer.

Yeah, the silicone is basically flush with the lens and wouldn't give sufficient (if any) protection when lying the phone flat on a table.

My p20 pro arrived on Friday, delivered by Nightline so I've had some time to play around with it.
I preordered from Three. No Bose headphones arrived with the phone but I've been told that they should arrive within 30 days. It did come with a clear silicone case.
I'm quite impressed with the phone so far. I had a Huawei Mate S and the P20 is slightly longer than that.
The facial recognition unlock feature is very handy. I'm also very impressed with the triple camera. Any photos I've taken so far look quite professional as they tend to slightly blur out the background and the object is crystal clear.

By putting in a sim from another operator.
