Does anyone here collect or ever bought match worn shirts?

Just looking at a reputable auction websites called the the-saleroom and classicfootballshirts which have a list of match worn football shirts for sale.

Does anyone collect any match worn jersey's for a hobby? Must be pretty rich if you're able to do so regularly given the prices some of them go for.

Not surprisingly, the most expensive one on auction currently going is Lionel Messi's 2014 World Cup match worn shirt against Iran (he scored the late winner 1-0, arguably his best WC goal to date), currently expected to go for £5,000-6,000!

    https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/midlands-sports-auctions/catalogue-id-srmidl10008/lot-3fd688d1-14a3-456a-a090-a8a300a1876d

Arjen Robben's 2010 WC final shirt currently expected to go for £3,000-£4,000.

Some mad prices, but if I were a millionaire (which I aspire to be one day ;)) would I consider buying an iconic player's jersey from an iconic match? Hmm maybe, I wouldn't exactly ration myself to do so, but if I had surplus amounts possibly.

Classicfootballshirts had some ROI international match worn shirts from the 80s and 90s, e.g. Ronnie Whelan, Ray Houghton etc, some of which I would be interested in although very expensive at around £250-£500. You can get recent match worn jersey's from Isco, Neymar etc for around £150 etc.

Do you own any match worn jersey's? Would you have any interest in doing so?

Are they ever washed or do they smell skanky?

I suppose if you get them framed they wouldn't would they?

The Lionel Messi one at auction says its unwashed.

I used to have a signed ball from the United treble winning team. The mother put an end to that...

Also i wouldn't trust that site, just looks dodgy

I have a United jersey signed by the team who won the CL in 2008. The year John Terry slipped on his arse as he kicked it.

Match worn shirts can be a big scam. You have to be careful where you buy from. One I saw recently was a very big German company who specialise in football memorbilia were selling a HSV 17/18 'match worn' Lasogga jersey. The problem with that was 1) Lasogga left for Leeds at the end of August and never played in the Bundesliga for us this season and 2) The 'Popp Feinkost' arm patches on the jersey they were selling as 'match worn' were only added to the jersey on the eve of our Bundesliga opener after the sponsorship was agreed, so the jersey couldn't have been from pre-season either.

    Scam.

My boss has a fetish and has a good few on display in the business. Including a Ronaldo man United one auctioned for charity. All of them signed

Big difference between match worn and signed.

Even signed one's i wouldn't trust, unless i personally witnessed item being signed, ahhh, they come with certificates of authenticity i hear you cry. Anyone can print one of them and sign it, worthless they are.

I have a large overhead print of Old Trafford, bought it in megastore before the Man Utd Arsenal game during treble season, we got to ground at midday for evening kick off. Players that signed it on way in were SAF, Beckham, Giggs, Blomqvist, Yorke, Cole, Solskjaer, Irwin, Stam, Butt and a few more. Now that to me is priceless as i witnessed them signing it

I collect programmes, I collect medals, I collect trophies. I don't collect jerseys, match-worn or otherwise. There's always going to be some uncertainty over provenance. Was it the jersey that was worn, or was it a spare? What is the proof it was worn in a particular match

I once had in my possession (but did not own it myself) a ball that it was claimed was used in the first ever World Cup final. There were 2 balls used, as the teams could not agree which one should be used. The guy who was selling it was from Uruguay. He wrote a history of that first World Cup. He tried to sell the ball at Christies in London. There were no takers, as it was only his word.

I actually picked it up for him from Christies to send back to him. I knew him because he sold me a medal from that World Cup - the first ever silver medal awarded to the captain of Argentina (the rest of the team got nothing and there were no more silver medals issued until after the 2nd World War). I know that medal is genuine (both because it was manufactured in silver and was exactly the same format as the gold and bronze medals - it also has the name of the Argentinian captain inscribed on the back). It's currently on display at the National Football Museum in Manchester.

Just to add, I know a guy who used to pick up "match shirts" from Old Trafford. Paddy Crerand used to "source" them for him. I've little doubt they were genuine, but he had absolutely no proof of that. I still see them up for sale at auctions regularly. I'll never go anywhere near any of them

I've tried my best to source the Solskjaer jersey from 1999, the one worn by him not the signed ****e. Couldn't source it anywhere, anyone any suggestions? I dont collect jersey but around 12 years ago I tried to get a hold of that jersey and couldn't. This thread just reminded me of my failure :(

Only way i could think of, watch old replays of the CL qualifying games that Ole played in, see if shirts were swapped at end, then try and trace/contact player ole swapped with

My mate had Terry Phelan's jersey from the Ireland Italy game at USA 94 (no doubt about the provenance, but it'd be a strange one to counterfeit anyway.) He used to wear it for 5 a side.

All the guys off Reddit say both those two sites are legit and they have nothing but praises for the two of them.

Ebay is definitely dodgy, a lot of the "match worn" shirts are just claimed as such without any proof, many even refuse to say which game it came from.

Though, I do know the fact that www.classicfootballshirts.co.uk provide a certificate of authentication for each one of theirs along with the shirt, (whatever that is).

classicfootballshirts have about 70k followers on twitter so I'm less likely to believe its con like some of the other sites are.

Tbh, the only way you're REALLY going to know for sure is if a player literally comes up and hands it to you in person, they're have to be some legit sites out there surely?

I collect Ireland and LOI shirts, it can be an expensive business alright but if you build up your connections you can get good deals as well as keeping a watchful eye on action sites. A lot of stuff goes under the radar at times.

Would you say the-saleroom and classicfootballshirts are reputable/legit? I assume people who do this for a hobby must have come across one of those two sites at some point, there's quite a few Ireland jersey's but most are match issued not match worn (i.e. spares they didn't wear).

Here's an Ian Harte ROI match worn jersey vs Denmark from a friendly in march 2002. Harte scored in the 3-0 win, on sale for £250.

    https://www.classicfootballshirts.co.uk/2002-ireland-match-worn-home-l-s-shirt-3-harte-v-denmark.html

"Player issue features - Correct player size flock print professionally heat pressed, paint transfer match details also heat pressed, no Eircom sponsor like on the commercial replica, swapped with a Denmark player and comes from their personal collection - a signed letter verifying this will be provided"

There was a poster on here years ago sourcing match worn Liverpool shirts. Can't remember who it was.

I'm well aware of that. The Ronaldo won was worn in some big, not sure which. He has been a season ticket holder at United for the last 20 years.

I wouldn't buy anything outside a reputable auction. At minimum I would some form of certificate of authentication, many on ebay don't even bother with that. Just rub it on the grass and claim it to be match worn.

I wouldn't trust a site like that. Clubs auction off shirts every now and then, Remembrance Sunday shirts for example. That's the best way of knowing that you are getting the genuine article. A friend of mine got a Liverpool CL final one, autographed by the squad. He won it in a bar in Liverpool. It came with a certificate of authentication which didn't look very professional to me.

I think some auction sites are better than others, they can't all be dodgy otherwise very few people would actually ever get any authentic memorabilia.

Reading through the reddit comments regarding www.classicfootballshirts.co.uk there is unanimous opinion that is indeed a legit site.

This for example is a classic example of crap that gets put up on ebay.

Off topic but legend has it that Terry Phelan used to play in socks he got himself and not in the ones provided by his clubs or the FAI.
