Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The law was changed to none Irish parents not getting citizenship from having a baby after coming over on a plane.

I've heard Sharkey interviewed of late, he appears to have zero knowledge of what the role of the president entails.

im sure most of the population wouldnt be au fait with all the presidency entails. but anyone who got elected would have state appointed advisors. he'll be grand. if people start putting the boot into him at this early stage, it would make me sceptical of their (boot kicking) motives.

Yes, that was I was alluding to. The law was changed because of the amount of pregnant women flying in to get citizenship.

But I'm not sure if they got here before the law changed, I think they did. Open to correction

Tubbs was very easy on him, as he tends to be. Halawa did himself no favours with that nonsense story about his hand.

Oddly enough, that might not be an altogether bad thing.

I would suggest, that most Irish Adults, would have a degree of difficulty reciting the Role of an tUachtarain in modern Ireland.

It actually IS a serious role Constitutionally, but the sitting tenants in Dail Eireann have, over the decades, made sure the corset strings are pulled nicely taut, making a break for the hills a very difficult thing altogether.

Yep,the more I think about it,the better an attribute that "Zero-Knowledge" might just be....definitely a maybe from me,in an early Opinion Poll :D

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

The media created the ****storm well before he was released from prison. If they had have just reported the story in a balanced manner and pulled the sisters up on their BS early on, he wouldn't have had the massive fall from grace.

My memory of the reaction from the late late show was that people who were not following the story as closely as others over the years were just dumbfounded by the stupidity of the story they created. When that happened and the likes of the Journal realised they pinned all their hopes on another fraudulent poster boy, they just abandoned him.

Now the Halawa Boy is seen as a joke figure. The chap will struggle to get a regular career job because of the Bull**** created by his sister's and the media (Especially the Journal). I still get the lolz about that Paper Mache, Tricolour that they claimed he made in Prison and smuggled out. They thought the Irish people were stupid because the remedial "journalists" were lapping it up.

Unfortunately for the Halawa clan Irish people can see through a load of of bollix when it's presented to them.

Naw, I think the best B.S. fail was the series of smuggled out letters. Especially the one that was dated the same date as it appeared in the media and there wasn't the slightest crease on the page.

You have in the guff at the bottom of every post, a thing about cats and toast.

Not derailing.. Just something that happened in the last hour with buttered toast and a cat

I doubt Miriam would be any better, but yet her name keeps coming up as a serious candidate as well... and yet people scoff at the Americans for electing a wealthy TV personality!

I don't know that much about him in truth, but Sharkey at least seems to be trying to start a discussion on the whole immigration issue, which is probably why he'll be shut down early.. The narrative that immigration is only a positive thing for Ireland MUST be maintained!

Looking at the letter, I'm getting a greater understanding on why he wants to go back to his Egyptian jail.

With access to both blue and red pens, the place is probably a good place to start writing his book ....... which actually might do well in the fiction section of the bookshop.

    3 years you say?

Rather than being sorry, next time don't end up addressing a political rally and giving statements on TV when out on holiday.

That letter is so transparent it's laughable (pro tip : surely it should be OUR mountains, OUR city, OUR kind people - just plays better, no?) .. Still, better handwriting than I have these days :p

Does it really matter what we believe? It's possible that it was a case of love at first site. Improbable but possible. They are married and that is the fact of the matter.
When that happened and the likes of the Journal realised they pinned all their hopes on another fraudulent poster boy, they just abandoned him.

Not just the media. The politicians who lobbied on his behalf were just as guilty. Twits claiming that he was being kept in sub-human conditions and his physical and mental health had suffered greatly. On returning to Ireland, they said that he was going to need years of care to help him recover. It was obvious from his appearance on the LLS, a few weeks later, that he was in excellent physical condition. They seem to have broken ties with him now and I feel some sympathy for him in that regard. They used him.

Dead on handwriting for a one handed man.....oh sorry, didnt his cell mate glue his hand back together as he was a world leading plastic surgeon or something?

I'm more impressed with how the prison guards provided him with two different colour pens, considering the "awful" treatment he got. I'd have to tear this house apart to find even a both blue and black pens at once, let alone the elusive red.

Why even was 3 years highlighted in red anyways? Was he worried his dad wouldn't remember how long its been, and needed to remind him several times in one letter...hell, remind him several times in one paragraph!

Now the cynic in me would say it looked very much like a propaganda piece to drive home the 3 years message but dis poor, poor lad wouldn't be part of this kind of nonsense now would he!

Apart from the assorted writing utensils and creaseproof paper in Egyptian prisons, they also provide excellent medical care and an ample and varied diet to inmates.

I just read a BBC story about it

'The letter described how he was sharing a dormitory cell with 30 others, sleeping in a space just over one foot wide'

'During his four-year imprisonment, Ibrahim Halawa staged a series of intermittent hunger strikes in protest against his continued detention without trial.

At one point in March this year, he became so weak that jail staff used a wheelchair to bring him to a family prison visit"

How the fcuk did he leave prison so overweight?

Not sure about him being a leader but there is some connection there, I believe.

It was the media's creation. They gave him special priority because he was Muslim and non-white. They relentlessly pushed the story (especially the Journal and RTE) until the politicians decided they would gain brownie points from the media if they were seen to do something.
The shinner element that supported him were of the far left variety (who should really be in PBP) and only on the basis of identity politics therefore guilt or otherwise was irrelevant.
There was support also from some NGOs either out of self interest or naive stereotyping.
That these groups now have egg in their faces and we hear nothing about it just a deafening silence is indicative of the general grandstanding dishonesty of the media in particular and how they never admit to having being wrong unless forced to. It should be a lesson to them but they will just keep ploughing merrily on with their own agenda indifferent to popular opinion and be taken increasingly less seriously as time goes by.

no . just a few posters on boards only. as far as the rest of us are concerned, he was acquited, released, job done.

the media simply reported the information given. they are guilty of nothing from what i can see.
Dont you thinkthat the Media aresuposed to critically examine the story, rather than simply parrot the version they are given. Theylike to hold themselves up as an essential pillar of democracy but it seems to me, that many of them have become lazy and merely repeact, parrot like, the press releases they are given, by interested parties. Isnt it a regular thing now, that in interviews such as with Halawa or his sisters, its normal for the interviewer to be informed of what is allowed and what is not allowed to be mentioned in the interview. Surely, if they are to justify their self appointed position of moral superiority to the rest of us, its incumbent on them to ask the questions, unpleasant or not, that WE want asked, and not just be a mouthpiece for who or whatever their so called guest happens to represent

Sadly, with the advent of the 24 hr news cycle, increase in # of news media competition and the likes of "BREAKING NEWS" and "EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW", most news groups will accede to the persons demands to ensure they get the exclusive, however brief or off topic, as a lot of folks just want the news fast & fresh...but dont care much for its details, sadly.

Isnt that the whole point tho, they stop being the investigative force, seeking the truth, that they are supposed to be, and instead become a mouthpiece. Its things like this which lead to people believing in Alt News and Fake news as they simply cannot trust traditional media. It is resting on the laurels of previous generations, and no longer fulfils its traditional role. Its only a matter of time befoe it dies, in its present form. Newspaper sales are falling through the floor, and eventually the likes of RTE etc wont be able to resist the tide of change that is washing over them. Lets see if Fr Ray can still get €400k a year or Uncle Joe who only has to work school days and gets Department of Education holiday times

Well ever notice how sinn fein supporters post on certain subjects around here.
You would swear they never spent decades chomping at the bit about removing foreigners from this island with their unbridled joy at inviting thousands of foreigners from God knows where to live here.

Ehhh why are they living in Turkey ?
Are they hoping to catch a boat or something.

Or maybe they are indeed linked to Daddy's organisation and are not wanted back in Egypt.

Ehh correction he is one of the top guys in Europe.
Somehow me thinks he hasn't been home in decades or he would have ended up in the nick like junior.

BTW has anyone asked the young lad if he agrees with the old FGM like his daddy's sidekick does ?

Oh but wait, didn't the Irish Times and Trinity's Egyptian darling get it wrong and despite his 20 years in Ireland, his completing a master’s and doctorate at Trinity College, "he still struggles with the nuances of English".

A bit like junior struggling with the nuances of avoiding public stages.

Labour might be interested in Halawa, but he does seem rather to be a rather nice but dim sort of chap. I think he wouldn't really pass muster at any sort of interview by the Labour veterans. I shed no tears over him, but from what I've seen of him he doesn't seem to be a nasty or dis-likeable chap as an individual. Just extremely limited brain-cells. I'd like to think he was just following orders, and he was the poor git left without a chair when the music stopped.

His sisters seem to be the real pieces of work. I almost feel sorry for poor Ibrahim being paraded around as a political prop by them. He has already lost years of his life for it.

Spot on, he seems to be thick as two short planks. Hope he does run for any kind of position in the public eye, it’s highly entertaining. Digging a hole for himself and the MB/relatives.
