Applying while in college

Just to preface my question - I know applications aren't open right now.

I'm currently in my 2nd year of college and I was wondering has anyone else applied while in the middle of earning a degree.

The reason I ask is because I see that people are waiting a year or two to be called for training (assuming they pass the previous assessments) and I'm worried that if, for example, recruitment opened next year and I get accepted for training the following year just before my final exams effectively making my final year a waste.

Don't get me wrong -- I'd rather join the Gardai, but I would also like to finish my degree. It isn't anything (directly) applicable to typical Garda work (chemistry) but at the same rate I'd like to see it out.

I know the obvious answer is to wait until I finish it but reading through this forum and seeing how few and far between recruitment drives are I'd rather not miss the opportunity if one arises.
