Hey guys, im not sure if there is a more suited forum for this so feel free to move it if necessary!

    LONG POST ALERT!!!!!!

So basically what CAO courses in college would suit me if i love both Science and Business?
I don't know how to choose between science and business courses....I love Biology and Chemistry in school and also do Business (all HL)
I did work experience in an office, working with insurance during last summer and i loved that also! Would pharmacy be a good option?
Also what courses would lead to banking/business/financial services ? Preferably UCC (or southern colleges as i am from Cork)

I alslo would love to travel, and even work in Dubai for a year or two after college. Do the companies in UAE look for specific sectors? What would an ideal course to choose if i want to work in Dubai afterwards?

This is what i have on my CAO at the moment
    Pharmacy UCC
    Biomedical Science UCC and CIT
    Finance UCC
Chemical Engineering CIT....(not to keen on this course...appears VERY hard)

    Thanks for any advice

It seems to me that while you enjoy science you have no interest in doing research? If you want to make money, travel and enjoy the financial aspect of things then Finance seems the sure fire path.
Otherwise if you prefer pure research with the chance of managing a pharma company then going into biomed seems like a good way to move up that ladder.
Is there a reason you avoided math since that's one that sort of stands between science and finance or do you have no appreciation for numbers? If not then you might not enjoy finance that much.

Pharmacy is one of the hardest courses you could possibly choose. I would advise asking a local pharmacist to sit in their dispensary for a few days and see what they actually do. Huge numbers of pharmacists hate their job because they studied it without understanding the job the degree leads to.

    Thanks for the advice guys!
I was thinking bimomedical (ucc and cit) as choice one and Business Information Systems(ucc) as a second choice.

I took your advice and looked furthar into pharmacy...perhaps its not for me..i havnt crosssed it off totally yet..ill need some more time to take a look at it again.

    Cheers guys!!

I had a look at finance in Ucc...the points, like biomedical are very high but there is no harm in putting them down anyway, i try not to worry too much about the points as anything can happen on the day, im just gonna put down what id prefer and do my best!!!

As for maths, i probably should have mentioned it before! I fo HL and..i suppose i am decent enough at it..i got an A in JC and it was my fav. Subbject. I loved it. And i still do like maths, but i just find it harder than i used to. I got a H5 in my pre. I was happy with this, considering we hadnt the course finished and the exam was relitivly hard!

    Accountancy?
Specialists in anti-fraud and the like can have a lot of travel options.

Perhaps take a year out to decide rather than make a hasty decision now.

    Hi kanadams.

I know of a possible area where it is possible to combine the streams of Science and Business.

I work in a Medical Scientist in a hospital lab (same qualification as the one in CIT/UCC). We use a lot of analysers to carry out our work.

The companies that manufacture these analysers and reagents are large multinational companies. They create products in diagnostics, medical devices, nutrition and pharmaceuticals.
Some examples would be Roche, Abbott, Beckman Coulter. There are others.

Many employees come from a science background and go on to work in sales, marketing, customer training etc.

There is also the possibility of travelling to work in sites over the world.
I know one guy who is based on Brighton but is always traveling to different European countries for work. I also know of another lady who took a career break from working in the lab here in Ireland to work for Roche in Dubai.

Thanks a million Martina, sounds good! I have taken a lot of time to decide on my CAO options and i think the UCC/CIT course would suit me best (CR320)!!!
Points are vety high though so i do have some back up!
Thabks a mil for the info!!

I’m a pharmacist working in a big teaching hospital. I’ve found it to be a very useful degree, I’ve worked in uk and Ireland for community industry and now Hospital Pharmacy. Salary is good and jobs fairly easy to find. I’ve not heard of pharmacists working in UAE, but it’s fairly easy to qualify to work in Australia if that’s an option for you. If you think you’d like business I’d recommend you do your science based degree first then add business later at masters level (MBA etc) as it’s harder to do it the other way around. Lots of people do business masters part time once working - several of my pharmacist colleagues have done that. I’d advise chatting to some pharmacists in your local hospital - it’s very different to community pharmacy and you’ll get a well rounded view then. Good luck.
