I thought so too, lots of people standing around looking vaguely bemused. Maybe they’re in shock. :D

I’d say the Limerick team and management might cancel the celebrations if youse two aren’t happy with the celebrations?

On paper Canning logically deserves it but sentiment will edge it Hannon's and it would be hard to begrudge him

I see he is the favourite with Paddy but I have no idea why, even taking into the consideration him being captain. Besides today he hasn't had any real outstanding game all season and in fact looked vulnerable at times. There's a handful of Limerick players who'd be more deserving of it than him I feel.

I would of said the same about Henry Shefflin in 2012, outstanding in the second half of the first game of final and that nailed him down the player of the year.
Get to the final and have a big one and you are nearly there.

Could canning have went short with that free?

I thought there was a guy to his Left free?

I’m not criticizing canning but it was a risk to go for it
Thought Galway should have tried to work the last free into a better position and take the point closer to goal.

Show some composure like Clare did against them at the end of the drawn semi final

It might have been possible that if Galway just played it short that the ref might have blown up for full time?

Happy for the genuine long suffering limerick fans. Thought Owens was shocking and would have had serious questions to answer had it finished level. I’m talking about the clear free for Casey which resulted in Whelan’s goal at other end. Galway just off the pace today and hard put back to back but they were excellent champions.

As an aside RTÉ are just embarrassingly amateur. Marty constantly referencing Delores O Riordain had no place today. Lyster called Declan Hannon Seamus after he lifted the trophy. Hurling deserves better.

Well he didn't blow full time until after Limerick had won possession from Canning's free dropping short, so maybe there was time.

But not sure what Canning knew or was told

Delighted for Limerick, much better team on the day and have been superb all year. Deserving winners. Watched them down in Thurles in the league semi earlier this year, and even though we sneaked it that night I was well impressed with that young Limerick team.

As for Galway, I think they will look back as this season being as being a let down. Failed to get out of 1B, lost their league title meekly, made hard work of retaining Leinster and struggled in the AI series. Just shows how hard retaining a title is.

well done to Limerick. beat Tipp, Kilkenny, Cork and then the defending champions is doing it the hard way

2 goals for limerick today should have been frees out. 3rd goal to many steps taken and the first a clear shoulder in the back. Thats 6 points.

If you go back and overturn every goal that may have been a free out then it's a completely different championship and never gets to today at all.

But also limerick probably shoukd have had a free in, before Whelan's goal, that's a 4-point swing.

Anyways, the ref was poor overall for both teams. You could see clearly the frustration for the players.

At least Joe Canning can safely continue to deliver yellow currys in the coming week now.

Can't start enforcing everything to the strict letter for one game a year.

Ah stop. Im talking about obvious fouls lad. Obvious. The shoulder through the back was obvious. Maybe not the steps for the 3rd goal but the shoulder was to be fair.

Peter Duggan from Clare was my player of the season. Bewtween Galway and Limerick players Canning was near enough the pick. But Kyle Hayes was MOTM today.

It was an exciting finish to game and my heart was thumping near the end after Galway got the 2 goals but I'm glad for Limerick. They were the better team overall. They only got 1-1 after their 2nd goal in almost 20 minutes of play but did enough to hang on. Too many wides from both teams means it won't go down as a great final but Limerick won't care. Hopefully Waterford will be next team to end a long wait for the Liam McCarthy Cup.

Exciting finish the a fairly ok Game, a crazy amount of wides for an All Ireland Final, a few strange calls by the Ref (But that's normal)
Limerick well deserved winners, but it was a little Flat as a final for me, but to the people of Limerick they won't give a fk, they're champions beat Nearly every team they came up against this year

Ref had a poor game but did not influence the result. There was a free given to Canning when Hayes won the ball cleanly going for it. He got higher than Canning and Canning came off worse. There was a few more like them the free again Casey that was not given. There was a yellow card given to young Morrisey that Canning scored. Galway got the value of those six points back from Owens

Galway goal should have been a free into limerick. Mcinerney lucky not to be sent off etc etc. Decisions for both sides could have gone another way. Everyone wants hurling refs to use a light touch but they then get destroyed for doing it because supporters only see the 50:50s that went against their team.

Owens did fine, got some decisions wrong but he was relatively consistent in how he reffed it.

Any team that beats Galways twice in the one year, Kilkenny, Cork, Waterford and Tipperary deserve there All Ireland. They had a great season. Best thing that happened to them was the defeat at Cusack Park against Clare. Allowed them away from the hype of a Munster final and about a months rest in the middle of the season. As well it dampened the hype in Limerick until the final week I imagine. They looked very fresh all year.

Galway put in their worst performance in recent memory but we'll take it. If they don't go off the rails, this Limerick team can improve further and realistically aim for back-to-back. Fantastic credit to the work done behind the scenes, and what a massive championship overall, where small details had huge consequences.

I think that is the big point. As long as refs are consistent normally they do not influence results. It is where they make a mistake and then try to make up for it like the ref in the Waterford/Tipperary game this year that they make a mess of games.

Shane O Donnell? Ah here come off it. Shane O Donnell will be lucky to get an All Star never mind be nominated for POTY.

Duggan is a decent pick for a non finalist, although largely a free taking merchant he has chipped in with some beautiful points and goals. At 20/1 I hope you'll throw a tenner at him anyway.

Personally I think it should be Canning, Mannion and [insert Limerick player here e.g. Mulcahy or Hayes] and one of the Galway lads winning with based on the individual but wouldn't begrudge the Limerick choice at all.

Someone will have to remind me of Declan Hannon's performances from this year because I recall him relying on Morrissey and Byrnes a lot of the time as well as solid full back line and O Donovan doing trojan mileage. Hats off he did well today on the best player in the country but I'm sure I was not alone in thinking there were times this year you'd think of swapping himself and Kyle Hayes' positions.

Back to back is a massive challenge as with a win comes expectations. This year Limerick were expected to go close but had the lost it was still a great year. Next year though they will not be the underdogs and the team everyone wants to beat.

Congrats to our neighbours across the Shannon, well deserved winners both today and throughout the campaign. Commiserations to our neighbours across Galway bay.

A very memorable championship that'll probably go down in the record books as a "classic" of sorts, especially given the heat wave that went with it :P A good few nail-biting finishes and Limerick finally ending the drought.

Limerick season was defined when they came from behind to beat Cork and especially Quaids interception on Seamy Harnedy. It was curtains to Limerick if Harnedy had connected with the ball. Small margins but it got them to the final. I'm so delighted for Limerick. I watched the 1994 final in disgust after they lost a game they should have won. I remember the camera zoomed into some of the fans in Croke park that day in 1994 and they were in tears after the final whistle. I'm not from Limerick but I felt so sorry for their fans that day. Enjoy the celebrations I'm so delighted for them. I am also heartbroken for Galway but at least they won it last year and nice to see the cup going around. Would like to see Waterford having their moment too. They derserve it after a really long wait. It was a great hurling championship.

Great to see a famine ended although I’d imagine there was a fair amount of soiled underpants from limerick fans during the 8 mins of injury time, they made hard work out of what should have been a 7/8 pt victory, next year will be even more open everyone will be gunning for limerick, Galway proved this year how hard back to back is to do......after long famines and the celebrations that last months it will have to be difficult to motivate the same crop of players, in saying that limerick have no reason not to be top flight for a good few more seasons and Win one or two more all Ireland’s out of the next 5. Amazingly now Cork are going through their worst ever famine. No title in 13 years and no minor in 17.......that will end soon no doubt. Of the top tier counties it’s only waterford now left to end their drought of what will be 60 years next season.

I think the Limerick management deserve enormous credit for this achievement. I said it after the Cork game how impressive their clarity of thought in their movement and playing the ball into space. Flanagan had a excellent game today, but his movement and the ball he got was very good. It's classic good coaching in devising a strategy to play a brand of hurling to get the best out of your players. Also it goes without saying but the way the management got work rate so high was exceptional, especially their use of the half forward line in tracking back. Having said that, Limerick had a great balance to their team with no glaring weakness.

Poor game finally erupted into life in the last ten minutes.

Galway were dogshjt and only for glynn and canning trying to haul them back in the embers of the match they would have been beaten out the door. Never got going. Flat all day. Players were lifeless. The extra game and extra time must have drained them. Can't put.my finger on it. Their brutal back line was shredded by the limerick forwards. Up front cooney and glynn didn't get a sniff.

Mike Casey will be hoisted aloft tonight. Kept the famous Glynn quiet. Glynn will be sent packing back to new York empty handed.

The limerick bottlers nearly bottled it again and canning will be bulling he didn't sink that final free. Paul Kinnerk will be in big demand now, two all irelands with two teams and limerick gaa will have to bump up his expenses account now to keep him.

What a championship. What a match. Limerick Abu.

Only got to listen in radio today, but deserved result. Limerick were only ahead once, and at that it was short lived. A 1 point win sounds like it wasn't a fair reflection on the game.

Congrats Limerick, hugely deserved. Enjoy it all!

Well done to Limerick! Great to see them get over the line. Enjoyed the game. I see a lot of comments that it was a poor game. It probably was, but it's a final, so not surprising that it was a bit scrappy and tense. I think all the Limerick backs deserve huge credit. Kept all the Galway forwards quiet. Bemused by the Galway performance as a whole. After the last game in the Leinster Round Robin, I think the general feeling was they were a step ahead of everyone else. Any word on why Flanagan was subbed? If he was gassed then fair enough. But Limerick lacked something going forward after he departed. He had a few dodgy touches early on, but had a magnificent game after that. Very similar to his performance against Cork in the round robin.

Sad now that the hurling is done for another year. Will remember this year for a long time. Disappointing that Tipp didn't even win a game, but the quality of the hurling this year was a pleasure to behold. I hope we are entering a real golden era of hurling in the coming years. 4 different winners in the last 4 years is quite something. And really, any one of 9 teams could do it next year. Look at where Limerick were this time last year. See you all for the league in January.

Congrats to Limerick. As fine a performance in an All ireland final that ever graced the old ground. the only drawback is that the scoreline didnt reflect your dominance. In my opinion this was as mixture of Limerick running on empty after a monumental effort and the shoddy performance of James Owens.
