How did you get it? I pre-ordered on Amazon a month ago - still not yet dispatched.

New album not doing much for me on first listen

Yeah I am not a fan at all tbh. Hopefully only play 4 or 5 from it on the tour

Musically I quite like the style they are going for, but the vocals and the flow of the lyrics seem all over the place.

Will give it another go on Fri when it hits proper channels.

I don't mind the music per say, but I agree on the lyrics/flow side of things. It is exactly what I expected after the cover art was revealed. It sounds how it looks if you get me.

I enjoy the new album. It's completely different from AM. Takees about 4 listens to get into. Nice to see them change direction massively. I can see a mixed reception from many fans come Friday.

Has a more of Last Shadow Puppets feel to it than AM

    Bit of Bowie?

I got Alexandra Savior's album last year - Alex Turner was heavily involved, to the point where I briefly wondered whether 'she' was going to be an alter ego. Had a similar mood to some of this new AM album. Lots of piano, synths, and echo on the vocals.

Personally, I miss the guitars but this might grow on me. The Alexendra Savior album got mixed reviews but I had it on loop for a couple of weeks.

Instead of 'clever' lyrics being dropped into songs seamlessly, it seems Turner tried to jam pack as many as he could into the songs and it loses a lot of the effect. A lot of the songs it sounds like he's freestyle singing over them, which can be fine sometimes but quite a few songs could have had any music in the background and it wouldn't have made a difference to the song.

The half crooning singing style he has wholeheartedly adopted on the record starts to grate as you listen to it. I am quite disappointed by the record overall. I don't mind a band 'changing' but it's the first Arctics record that is quite samey throughout.

I think I'd be fairly happy to never listen to that album again.

That was an album that reminds me of The XXs first one. Inoffensive and no standout tracks. I really hope they don't play too much on the tour.

Agree with an earlier poster, his crooner style that he's adopted really grates on me.

Wow. That actually gave me a headache

I'm actually very surprised this got the green light.
It'll sell buckets loads off the back of AM but it will annoy a lot of fans.

It's clear now why there was no lead single / preview.

The only tracks I actually like are '4 out of 5' & 'Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino'

I just want an album of bangers like R U mine, A certain Romance, Pretty Visitors etc etc etc. I have only listened to it twice but I'm not overly bothered about missing out on tickets to the 3Arena now.

I've had the album for the last 2 days. I can't stop listening to it I think it's amazing. It definitely takes a few listens to get your head around it. There are no big guitar riffs or singalong choruses, the songs all have a fairly leisurely pace and and it's very dense lyrically. Apparently it was mostly written on piano and in a lot of songs the guitars take a back seat to synths and keyboards. Everytime I listen to it I notice something I didn't hear before. You have to admire them really. It would have been so easy to make AM part 2 and everyone would have lapped it up but instead they take a sonic left turn and try something different. That said it's not a million miles from the slower stuff on AM. I definitely hear some Bowie in it. Lots of references to outer space etc. There isn't much for the drummer to do on this album which is a shame because he's great but I think he's also responsible for a lot of the synths on this record.

There'll be the usual moaning from "fans" who wish the band would go back to writing songs about being 17 and trying to blag their way into sheffield nightclubs but turner and the lads are aiming for (and hitting) something much higher these days. I'd probably give it 4 out of 5 (heh) and I think I'll have to see about getting a standing ticket for one of these gigs now!

Edit: people probably shouldn't post links here, the mods won't take kindly to it

Yeah you have to admire him releasing the album he wants to release rather than what everyone would want to hear, its just far too mellow for my liking. Sounds more like a side project than an AM album.

It is definitely not what the majority of fans wanted anyway. It is a total concept album. But hey, I am sure they are wealthy enough at this stage to do whatever they want

It doesn't really surprise me to be honest, he said himself playing the songs off the first couple of albums feels like telling the same jokes over and over.

It's boring if bands just do the same kind of album over and over though. I admit I would have liked a few bangers as well but this album is fascinating.

Bands shouldn't give a f*ck what their fans want. Caring too much about what "fans" want is what has ruined other once great bands in the past.

    I don't disagree

Bands shouldn't do the stuff they used to do just because some want them to of course. I wouldn't have wanted them to do that at all but I still dislike the album. The fact that some people still think that if you don't like said album it must be because you wanted it to be like their old stuff is shortsighted and silly. I say that as someone who thought that, while AM was still pretty good and enjoyable, it was a step down from previous ones.

I've listened to it a few times and it just hasn't clicked at all. Turners singing flow grates on quite a few songs and even in parts which I enjoyed there tended to be some awkward turn that halted it. Clipping Matt's wings on drums is disappointing too.

I hate the new album so much. Probably going to sell my tickets now because I couldn't listen to those songs live. They might not play that many from this album but i have a feeling the whole set will be full of these songs!

Ya I'm in the same boat. I managed to get 2 standing tickets for the Tuesday gig when they went on sale and I was really looking forward to it but now I couldn't care less really. It's not so much that the new album is absolutely terrible but more the fact that the live gigs they have currently played on this tour don't seem that great. Turner's singing style has completely changed and this crooner persona is frankly annoying. Even their up tempo numbers like A View from the Afternoon have been slowed down and are sounding terrible live. I'm all for bands changing their style but this is so different to what we were expecting that it should definitely have been released as a Last Shadow Puppets record instead

They played in Hollywood last weekend and only did 3 songs off the new album out of about 20, so I wouldn't be too worried about it.

I was on the fence about getting tickets as although AM is one of my favourite albums of the decade, I never cared much for their earlier stuff. Happy enough with my decision not to pick up a ticket now after this, I saw them on the AM tour and that'll be enough for me.
