Two things from Tuesday that I very much enjoyed:

    1) watching on BT, it showed the players lined up in the tunnel. When they initially cut to the teams Salah is not there. However, you can see the young mascot at the front who is looking past the camera start to jump up and down and cheer and it becomes clear that what he was excited about was Salah walking up to join the players. A very visceral adoring reaction from a young fan
    2) I watched the game in the Square Ball off Holles Street and there was a bench of lads of Middle Eastern / North African origin one of whom was wearing an Egyptian jersey. Every time the ball came to Salah right from the start of the match this table full of lads were excitedly shouting at the screen. And they lost their **** when he scored his goals in the first half. When the second went in I was jumping up and down hugging the lad in the Egypt jersey - they were there to watch a player, our player, not a team

I suppose the point of these random tidbits is that the significance of Salah's contribution and performance is only really dawning on me now right at the tail-end of the season. Right now he's playing as well as anyone in the world. Suarez gave us that in 2013 / 2014 and I knew what we had on our hands because I could see it right from when he joined us from Ajax that he was special. But Salah is eclipsing that season as the games get bigger. And he doesn't have any of the baggage that Suarez has; and he is an important player in a way Suarez isn't given where he hails from and his religious persuasion.

It's magnificent to see magic unfolding infront of our eyes.
I also watched it in the Square Ball. Where were you sitting?

Ive noticed from the Inside Anfield videos posted here that Salah is last out on the pitch for the warm-ups and the game itself. Could be a superstition of his or something as he seems to do it every time.

Hah yeah noticed that too. Wondered what would happen if another player had the same routine...

Ah right. I was sitting in front of the projector screen in the first bar area. It's a nice boozer.

Gerrard to Ibrox rumours have made it to the BBC now... apart from obvious reasons, not sure about this - feels like too much too soon.

He's having a good season with the kids, has Klopp and all the support of Melwood to assist his progression and he'd be jumping into a cauldron of pressure and expectations.
Feels like a very binary choice - it could either be the making of him or a very, very public disaster - and you'd have to expect that his background won't go down too well with the bigots...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40,061 ✭✭✭✭Harry Palmr

He's be mad to take any sort of high profile management job, no matter how tin-pot the league. Flop and that's him on BT Sport forever. Think about that world, think about that!

He'd be mad to take it.

Anything other than challenging Celtic and he's seen as a failure. Celtic have a revenue of £90m and are profitable. Rangers have a revenue of circa £30m and run at a loss.

Their owner, a convicted tax cheat, has undermined the 3 managers he's had to date, sacking two so far. He's also been found to have lied to the takeover panel and hence is close to being cold shouldered.

The club until recently didn't have any credit facilities. They've now got something like wonga payday loans. Between this and loans from shareholders, the annual loss is being covered but there doesn't appear to be anything in the kitty.

The fans are restless and revolting. The club is going no where. They don't have the money to challenge Celtic, or the patience to slowly build a stable model from the bottom up. They're plunging from one crises to the next, even a fully paid up Rangers man like Derek Mcinness saw the mess they were in and body swerved the job.

To top that off, you've probably the most demanding, expectant, impatient, rioting and bigoted fan bases in the UK. One of the big talking points is what Gerard's religion is, with suspicion being aroused as he apparently has a daughter named Lourdes.

An absolute poison chalice of a job.

I'd rather him take a job instead of being handed the Liverpool job in a decade or so with no experience.

Let's see what he is made of and let him earn a chance at the Liverpool job in a decade or so.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,405 ✭✭✭Sofa Spud

Yeah, my tuppence worth is for Gerrard to stay put. He's effectively an apprentice - just got all his badges and is surrounded by an organisation that's emotionally bought into his success. Pretty sure I can remember Klopp saying something about Gerrard should take the Melwood position and learn his trade away from the pressure of the press - makes total sense and I hope his head isn't turned. I'd said it was a binary choice and I really can't see how it could be anything other than a disaster...

And I don't think he should be given the job after Klopp - the boot-room worked in the 70's/80's and then Souness buried it for good - he has to earn his chops somewhere else but just not now - he's doing a good job learning now, no need to risk that development for ego sake

Funnily enough, Souness wasn't really a bootroom appointment. He earned his shot at the job, ironically at Rangers.

I didn't say never take a job, but not yet (frankly I'd not want him anywhere near the Liverpool job unless he really shows something spectacular - I'm not a fan of old boys managing clubs in principle - too much baggage) Go and be a hero somewhere else when ready to give it a go which he clearly isn't. Rangers just want a high profile appointment who will bring in the sponsors and get added media minutes.

Breaking | Max Meyer will leave Schalke this summer on a free after turning down several contract offers from the Bundesliga club, according to Kicker.

He hasn't quite progressed as expected but as a free on a 80k wage he'd be a good pick up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,861 ✭✭✭Mr.H

To be fair would he be expected to win the Scottish league with the budget they have? Could be a good job for him if he wanted some experience.

Yeah, good catch, and I guess Roy Evans was the last boot room appointee and they didn't have the good grace to fire him and put him through the ignominy of having Houlier as a joint manager before he finally hung up his sheepskin coat. Just never warmed to Souness and he was hard to take after all the success we'd had before his arrival. Anyway, let's hope Stevie sees sense

Could be a Klopp special... still so young, with tonnes of ability if directed properly. Would be a decent move to shore up the midfield options a bit too, and worst case scenario could sell in a year for a tidy profit.

Souness wanted to do things his way so he sold our best players. Tried to cover his ass by claiming the team was getting old.

Evans was brilliant but didn't have that ability to take the team one step further

They have had 3 manager this season and no budget yet are still only 10 points of Celtic.

Not really sure what that say about how bad Celtic really are they should be winning the league by 30 points every season with their budget and complete domination of that league.

Gerrard given a half decent budget might just be able to attract players and actually challenge Celtic if there is anyway a half decent manager in him.

Shalke's Sporting Director, Christian Heidel, has previously said that Max Meyer has offers from the Premier League but he's holding out for one from Bayern. The Italian media believe Emre Can is doing likewise.

The fact that Bayern were very quick to secure the signing of Leon Goretzka in January would also suggest that maybe they aren't that keen on either of the players.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40,061 ✭✭✭✭Harry Palmr

FFS, young German players have to cop on, Bayern have the pick of the harem, if you are not the hottest bird with big boobies then you're going to have to look elsewhere like it or not.

I'd argue that apart from Evans (and Ronnie Moran as caretaker, twice), the boot room ended when Dalglish was appointed Player/Manager. Neither he nor Souness were part of the Bootroom, though obviously Kenny was a lot more successful and liked!

Souness wanted to change the culture of the club. He wanted to introduce things he had experienced in Italy, placing an emphasis on physical conditioning in pre-season, managing players diets etc. The senior players who had enjoyed success with the club and weren't keen on the changes were moved out quickly and replaced by players that would accept his philosophies.

The replacements weren't always at the technical standard required and the tough pre-seasons affected the early season form of the team. Any chance of the league was gone by the time the team would start to find form in October.

He could have been a success if he had tried to change things gradually over his tenure instead of trying to do it all from day one.

He should be wary of going there, John Barnes could give him the benefit of his experience at Celtic. They were quite happy to use him to attract talented players and also didn't have a problem ditching him when things got tough.

Celtic fans I know like to pretend Barnes never managed the club and credit Martin O'Neill for players like Bobby Peta and Stiliyan Petrov being at the club.

Oddschecker now have Stevie at 1/4 on for the Rangers job, so on the assumption that bookies don't like to lose money and have contacts, looks like he's not taking the advice of the posters on this thread....

Also, would be inclined to throw a big bucket of iced water on the Sadio injury rumours - the article stinks of click bait - he strolls happily into a hospital, could be anything, no signs of bandages etc - hopefully a big nothing burger...

Express ****-sheet taken action regarding a contentious article published this morning.
Liverpool fans and Football Club: Our apology

Yesterday a comment piece by a freelance journalist entitled 'Liverpool must take serious action after Roma violence or risk further trouble' was published on this website.
This article was ill-informed and wrong. It did not, in any way, reflect the views of the Express. It should never have been written and was very quickly removed.
We unconditionally apologise, both for the article itself and any offence, understandably, caused.
The journalist who wrote the piece was immediately suspended.
