Last year made a significant saving, whilst increasing cover comprehensiveness - via research and changing policies.

So - getting close to renewal time.

I was initially on VHI One plan.
Changed to Essential Health by Laya.

This year - what are your picks?

Two possibilities that jumped out at me were,

    VHI One Plan access
and VHI One Plan access plus
    hia - compared

    Anyone looking at these plans?

There’s a poster on ask about money who gives me wonderful advice every year.

Very poor IMO. Only 60% cover for a private hospital semi-private room. Any plan that doesn't give 100% cover for at least a semi-private room in private hospitals (subject to a reasonable excess) should be avoided.

The benchmark option for in-patient cover IMO is Laya's Simplicity plan. If you can afford the extra cost (€1,190), no other plan gives more bang for your buck.

The cheapest plan with comprehensive cover at the moment I can see is Laya's Flex 500 Explore @ €791.

By comprehensive cover I mean a plan that provides 100% cover (subject to excess) for a semi-private room in all non-specialist private hospitals and doesn't apply co-payments to any in-patient surgical procedures.

Would I be correct to say, this is like a 500 euro variant on Essential Health 300?

I definitely can't afford to go up in cover; so, Essentia Health 300 seems like the best option again for this year...

For the sake of 90 euro extra per year, I think that 300 vs 500 excess may be worth it.

Yep, that's pretty much the difference. If you're happy paying the extra €100 for the reduced excess, then staying put makes sense.
