This is a cracking main event, Lee for me really needs to make a statement here to get back into title contention, barboza can lose this and keep fighting top lads as he will imo always fall short against the cream of the crop.
You'd have to think Lee will go straight for a take down and for me I think if he doesn't get barboza outa there in two I think barboza could get it done, not sure if pts or ko though.
He's been in so many wars that it can only help here in the latter rounds and only been finished by ferguson, cerrone (subs) and varner (ko)
I'd be very surprised myself if this went the distance.

frankie dominated cub last time out but he was caught by cub at one stage iirc, think it was plain sailing after that iirc (need to watch that one again)
I've had no idea why this match up was made again but read this..

So when the UFC offered him a new contract on the contingency that he rematch Edgar, Swanson was a bit surprised

I'd be surprised if Frankie lost this esp in his own back yard, 3 rounds will suit cub more and I'd expect him to go head hunting or it'll be a frustrating night for dub but frankie pts looks obvious to me.

Santos Branch shouldn't last too long...hope I'm wrong, Santos is a killer and will no doubt try to remove branch's head in the opening couple of minutes.
Could you imagine having that lad looking over at you from the other side of the octagon :P

Johns Sterling another pickem, no idea
There's always been so much hype around sterling which I could never understand, lost 3 of his last 5 and on the back of a nasty ko here yet although saying that he could well have been undefeated going into that last fight after two split losses (prob should have beaten caraway iirc)

    Miller v Hooker
whatever happens here miller will have had his 27th fight with the ufc which equals the record held by mir and ortiz (bisb/kosh 24)
I hope he wins here as it'll be four straight losses otherwise, saying that I doubt they'll let him go either.

second fight of the night anderson v cummins will have a lot folks ready for bed, thankfully the likes of la flare isn't in the same division as cummins.
I can't watch la flare, he almost makes jake shields look exciting.

I like tony martin, should kick off things with a win.

I don't think the heavyweight match up will be up to much and pray it doesn't go the distance for the likes of willis anyway.

Good looking card overall I think

Should be a good night of fights . I fancy Barboza for the KO , if Lee doesn't get it done early can see him tiring ,getting lazy when throwing himself and hanging around in the pocket too long...Lee looks lethargic at times in past fights in the standup exchanges

never realised how much of an outie Kevin Lee has.

I was just reading there about Thiago Santos, he is tied for with Anderson Silva 8 knockouts in the UFC middleweight division. The record for overall knockouts is Vitor with 12 and Thiago is the only active fighter close enough to break that.

Total domination here from Corey .Cummins looks like he doesn't want anymore of it

Cummins is being rode like a pig.

Interesting those punches to the spine weren't called, absolutely illegal move.

What an end to that fight, his neck will be sore for a few days.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,683 ✭✭✭Subcomandante Marcos

Refs made a balls to that, the buzzer ended that fight, not the ref.

He was out at the bell though IMO

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,513 ✭✭✭seanhynes

I wouldn't call that kicking, more like twitching.

It was a tough call, but I'm gonna defer to the ref on this one. I think he was prob looking for some sort of response and didn't get it.

I still don't think it was the correct call , the ref didn't stop the fight before the bell, the Georgian won 2-1 at least , bull**** call he was the better fighter

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,683 ✭✭✭Subcomandante Marcos

The ref didn't separate them until after the horn sounded. The fight had ended, he ****ed up.

Better fighter overall but still got put to sleep at the end of the day.

Dodgy nj fight commisoner in the octagon too to influence the decision for the referee, the Georgian should get a submission denial bonus of the night

One of the more bizarre call outs you're likely to see

Kevin Lee doing some impromptu break dancing after that kick.

Best chicken dance I've ever seen. How did Barboza not finish him. Fair play to Lee for getting the win after that. Didn't watch the fight yet but reading it as a Khabib like domination from lee

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,959 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

Lee was outstanding overall, insane cardio, great striking and taking edson down at will
I'd like to see him get khabib though I'd imagine he'll need another fight or two for his chance, the loss against ferguson might be the best thing that ever happened him
edson had his chance though in round three but outclassed besides

average card for me, johns like someone said was outclassed by sterling, wasn't even competitive

willis just stood there waiting to counter, was hoping sherman might shake him up, did well to survive after being clipped though.

could have called the frankie cub result after 2/3 mins
    la flare garcia was painful
hooker I really like, no telling how good he could become even though miller is well past it now.

Nearly hit the ceiling, one clean punch was all that was needed possible but would have been such an undeserved winner even if I backed edson

How does the ref call a tko after the bell? The fight is over.

I would have thought he wins by submission or it goes to a decision. The ref ended the fight after the horn to my eye

What an end to that fight, his neck will be sore for a few days.

I only caught the finish highlight. https://streamable.com/pkriu
And found it a bit worrying to watch. Looked like he KO'd himself on the takedown, then came around in a mounted guillotine.
The legs and arms flailing about looked like he was choked out at least once and came around as he adjusted.

I'm not certain, but I think NJ utilised video replays for situations like this.
I'm guessing the commissioner noticed was KO'd on the takedown, so told the ref to call the TKO. He was out at the bell also, so technical submissions was also an option.
If you're out when the ref cals the fight, you lost.

If the ref deems him not to be out and ends the fight is he able to change it retrospectively?

Being conscious isn't a binary thing. If you are at 80% out of it you can't defend yourself. He was clearly out of it at the bell, his eyes are glazed over and his legs go from kicking to like an autopilot twitch. I thought he did enough to survive until I saw him when they separated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,405 ✭✭✭Lukker-

New rules state yes, replays can be used for a fight ending sequence, and because it was at the end of the fight they can call it.

If the ref deemed him not to be out at the bell, then it would have proceeded to decision. It was only a finish because the ref deem him to be out. As far as I'm aware, it's 100% the refs decision at the time.

He didn't look to breaking them up due to submission, usually a ref does it with more urgency to get the fighter to release the Choke

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,785 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

He wasn't breaking due to the submission. Other guy didn't tap, and when he checked on him once or twice he responded* so he let it go on.
But when he actually broke them up. Polish guy was very clearly out - which means he lost.

On review they called it with the TKO (for the self KO I'd guess), personally I'd have called it a technical submission as that was really obvious. The exact situation came up with Big John a while ago. After an Invicta fighter choked out her opponent, lost the decision win AND lost an appeal. Some hillbilly commission.
