Frenotomy experiences

Phn said our baby had a tongue tie. We got a consultation with a specialist, who said he had a class 3 tongue tie and performed a frenotomy a week ago. He prescribed quite a lot of pain meds.

Since then our baby is in a lot of distress, especially when feeding. He is consuming less not more, and requires a lot of comforting while feeding, which he didnt before.

No signs of infection. Really regret getting the procedure done. He was consuming plenty before, and was cheerful and calm. Now he's distressed and unsettled a lot, and it's difficult to feed him. Been in touch with the specialist to try to find out if there's something more to it.

Any other experiences to put this into context?

I think after a tongue tie they have to learn how to feed again so like any skill it takes a bit of time? We had laser on a posterior (4th) tie and it definitely was 2 weeks before I felt there was an improvement and then continued the exercises for another few weeks. We were having issues feeding though.
    Hopefully he’ll be okay soon

Bit more alarmed by weird defensive responses from the specialist and his wife/physio/magician.

She told us we should have pushed suppositories in to the second knuckle. That is a blatantly and shockingly bad suggestion on our tiny baby son. Hasnt had suppositories in days so it was as irrelevant as it was bizarre.

He then responded saying he reviewed the video and the procedure went normally; there was a band of reattachment because we hadn't done the post op exercises enough. So again; all about how they did nothing wrong and this is actually our fault. Not much about helping.

We did do the exercises. We couldn't do them six times a day because he was sometimes very unsettled when we tried.

We weren't aggressive in our contact at all, just worried. This reaction is weird and alarming. Going to get gp to check him.

He had 630ml today. He should have had 780ml. Hasn't had so little in a day since 24 March. (Guessing be had vaccinations that day.)

My little girl got her tongue tie done and the plastic surgeon who did it explicitly said not to do any stretches and reattachment is rare. I'd definitely go to your GP for a second opinion. I can give you the name of the person who I went to if you're in Dublin. I was very happy and my little girl greatly improved after it. It did take about 2 weeks though.

Holy god, the second knuckle? That seems barbaric.
Ive met the same crew, and found the experience grand on a whole.
There’s very little evidence to support doing those exercises, to the best of my knowledge. I did them a bit, but six times a day is not realistic

PHN recommended a homeopathic remedy to my wife yesterday. Reinforces my feeling that this was a bad decision, as it doesn’t indicate the best judgement on her part.

Feeds still down but he’s a bit more settled. Hopefully he’ll be ok in a few days.

Greatly regret the whole thing. Horrible feeling.

Reading about it, posterior tongue ties involve a deeper cut, and a greater chance of reattachment. There is also less evidence of them being beneficial. In our case so far it has been clearly detrimental and distressing. It also was unnecessary; he was consistently feeding well above his target.

The specialist didn’t make the impact of the procedure clear to us. Even if we knew how much pain medication he would prescribe we would have thought twice. We deferred to his judgement about whether it was a good idea for us.

He sent a link with instructions about suppositories. It said 2cm insertion. My second knuckle is over 5cm from my fingertip. I guess they don’t know which knuckle is which. Dangerous advice one way or another.

Have appointment with GP tomorrow. We’re wondering if there is something else wrong or if he’s teething. Seems much too early for that though. He has been dribbling a lot more since the op for some reason.

GP's view was that the procedure was unnecessary and traumatic. Also thinks the dribbling might have been caused by it. He is ok though. Said the feeds weren't low enough to worry and he's still gaining weight.

I’m really sorry your baby went through this. The PHNs quality here is mixed at best.
