    The head dwarf shouts back.

Varkrash swings at one of them, smashing it to pieces. However he recieves a sharp blow to the head immediately afterward, knocking him out.

He awakens next to the stairs in the room with the historical mosaics and the four exits. Columbo is beside him.

"Got you out of there just in time pal"

The flame emits a powerful chilling cold. His sorcerer's blood can tell it is dense with magic, originating in the wild untamed magic he is familiar with, not the learned controlled form known by wizards.

Therai tries to extinguish the flame

    He shrugs.

'Stupid skeletons. Half a mind to go back and smash them up again.'

He considers heading East again, but decides instead to head North, checking for danger.

The flame is extinguished instantly. Within the tinder upon which it burned is a potion, pinkish in colour.

The only way out of the room is South, from which can be seen another East-West passageway, covered heavily in blood.

Varkrash finds a gem made of unmelting ice, worth 1,400GP.

Columbo shakes his head. "I can't heal my friend"

You gain a +4 bonus on the following checks and saves: Swim checks made to resist nonlethal damage, Constitution checks made to continue running, Constitution checks made to avoid nonlethal damage from a forced march, Constitution checks made to hold your breath, Constitution checks made to avoid nonlethal damage from starvation or thirst, Fortitude saves made to avoid nonlethal damage from hot or cold environments, and Fortitude saves made to resist damage from suffocation. Standing on his toes, Therai can see over the creature to the young man,he can be seen to be perspiring, a horrified look in his eyes as his leg is slowly eaten. His eyes seem to be the only part of him he can move.

    OOC: Stopping there.

Vrakrash decides this corridor would be a nice place to rest up for a while. He beds down for a sleep after rolling out his bedroll from his pack.

The two spells arc outward from their casters slamming into the creatures body, which slouches off some of its flesh, before detaching itself from the young man and firing a dart from a stalk that emerges from its head.

The dart hits the wall behind Retula, as Mags begins to sing a song of courage and valour, rousing Therai. The dwarves begin to slice into the creature, cutting at its back. Two more powerful bolts from Therai and Retula drop the creature.

The paralysis on the young man was held in place by the creature's magic, with it gone he suddenly springs back up.

The creature emits a terrible wail as it lies dying, then the whole party feels the maze shake.

"That was a young queen...thanks for your help, but I don't want to be around when its guardians get back, they left her thinking she was safe with me."

The shaking gets louder as the young man runs off, from the sound the beasts are in the pit room.

    OOC: Stopping there.

"Featherplucker! You couldn't just let it have it's dinner in peace. We need to book! Like, now. And stuff!""

Ooc : which way did the victim go?
If feasible without causing a delay while waiting to file out of the room, Retula will (carefully) grab the dart and - again assuming it's quick - chop the stalk off the larva.
Then unless Therai or Mags have a plan I suggest we run like fun in the direction we were headed.

(Or we could split open the larva, climb inside, and pretend to be the baby queen...)

Retula grabs the dart and stalk and the group head off in the direction they were headed, which also happens to be where the victim is headed. He turns as he sees them approach.

"Are all of you following me? I don't..."

He stops in his tracks as the passageway terminates at a wall. Mounted on the wall is the skull of a devil. Below is a man lying dead, ripped apart.

"Jon? No..." he begins to cry as another pounding noise is heard, the beasts are in the blue fire room now.

The skull has its mouth open with blood encrusted on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,808 ✭✭✭Evade

OOC: How big is the mouth of the skull?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

Looking at the mouth Therai reasons that his fist could fit in it.

The massive ants let out a roar of rage upon finding their dead queen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,808 ✭✭✭Evade

Therai picks up Jon's body and tries to place his hand in the skull's mouth. As he's doing it he turns to the fleeing man, "Sorry."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

The demon skull bites off the hand and siphons the blood out of it. The whole wall, along with the skull disintegrates and is replaced with a portal.

At this point, three of the Praetorians round the corner and lunge at the dwarves and Retula.

    OOC: Init

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

The Praetorians seem particularly determined to attack Retula, but miss her, distracted as the dwarves attempt to kill the larger Praetorian, though their blades do little damage. Mouthing foul phrases from an ancient tongue, both Retula and Mags curse the main ant in separate ways as its flesh begins to rot and its body is physically weakened. Mag's curse passes out in a purple wave of energy weakening the other two ants as well.

A sequence of white hot energy from Retula, combined with a torrent of icy stalactites from Therai, bring the leader to near death, before the necrotic curse unleashed by Retula severs the ant's brain stem.

After taking a beating from everybody, the second Praetorian is felled when Therai freezes the air leading to its joints, which shatter and the ant falls apart like a broken toy.

Seeing that it is vastly outnumbered against mammals that can fight back, the final ant flees.

The man they rescued cowers in a corner, delirious from what has just happened. Behind them the portal flickers rapidly between destinations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

    "he'll be back. With friends."

She examines the portal to get a feel for the kinds of destinations. She calls her raven to her shoulder.

"Looks like pit luck. Pot luck! I meant pot. You! Sniveller - you wanna test this out for us? Or you could wait here and explain what happened to the ants?"

Therai turns to the frightened man "Come with us through this portal or take your chances with the ants"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

Therai's stark choice wakes him from his stupor.

"Of course, the portal, only chance we have....thank you once again"

The portal shifts between a desert, a jungle, a temple, a tundra near a mountain with large gates built into it and shrine on a grey looking island.

The dwarves recognise the mountain as Dhurn Daral, the dwarven settlement to the far North, near the polar ice caps and close to the entry to the interior world at the north pole.

The shrine, Mags can tell is on Neros, island of harsh seamen and warriors.

The other three locations are unknown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,808 ✭✭✭Evade

"Anywhere is better than here but I am not fond of the cold" Therai turns to the man "I'm Therai by the way"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

"Vetoing the desert. And like, we just opened the portal by feeding it blood so I'm guessing it's not the least evil temple on the planet? So I'm like let's go to the jungle or something?"

She giggles at the thought of harsh seamen. Totally harsh!

    "Jungle sounds good"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

    "sold! Quel lema, bro's"
Hetyaro poised like a pirates parrot, Retula times her dive for the jungle setting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,808 ✭✭✭Evade

Therai waits for the cycle to come around to the jungle again and steps through the gateway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Fourier

Mags waits once more and dives, as do the dwarves in turn.

    OOC: Okay, new thread tomorrow.
