That story is the exception I would say, and the farmer in question is at nothing if he expects that arrangement to last long-term. The labour issue is 2 fold, there certainly is a shortage of staff for dairyfarms in Ireland and its in the benefit of the industry overall if we do try to address this and make it more attractive, however alot of that starts inside the gate and with the farmer himself, he cannot ever expect to entice a potential employee to his farm when there are countless other dairyfarms who will offer alot better conditions. Actually on the dairy labour issue, and word on the much publicized trial scheme last yr in waterford/kk for the people drawing down the dole to go milking cows???

I've come to the conclusion employing on dairy farms in Ireland is not going to work long term because big scale farming won't work here. In certain circumstances employing people will work but I think the whole structure will need to be examined.

The fragmentation of large farms here is one major issue, picking up and dropping off a few 100 cows on different farms for grass and milking then moving on to the next farm is quite common from what I hear. Hours and hours of milking cows. Guys working 20 hour days for the same pay rate per hour every hour. Maybe I'm being too sweeping and there are 500 cow farms working nicely here.

I agree, what you describe is unsustainable but I don't know of any one doing 20 hour days or operating the way you suggest.
