Bike recommendations

Looking to upgrade my 2012 Scott speedster 20 on the cycle to work scheme going to spend the 1000 just on the bike , what would yous recommend for adventure racing and the odd duathlon ?. I don't have the spare cash to upgrade wheels etc on my Scott so I am just going to use that as my commuter. Cheers!
