Replacing cord in generator

Hi, I've been hit by a double whammy on my boat this weekend - first my engine packed up, I suspect the starter battery may be low, but then the cord of my generator broke off as I was starting it up to recharge the battery.

The generator is a small-scale one, a medusa ti-2002. I'm not much of an engineer or electrician, should I try to tackle this myself or call a professional?

Update: the starter battery seems more or less fully charged. It's the engine then - Kubota, type V2203-EU1

The pull cord should be handy enough to repair you just have to do a bit more stripping down to get at it, if you can video everything you are doing to help put it back together, as for the engine it could be anything from a bad starter or even a bad earth.

Sorry about the delay, but thanks very much for your help! Realised the engine wasn't starting because of the battery - I charged it and it's going fine now. I'll have a good look at that video now and get to work on the generator. Thanks again, much appreciated
