New Build for Video Editing

    Hi All,

I'm looking at a PC for Video Editing, using Adobe Premiere Pro.

I got a quote based on advice from various sites, but it came in at £1600

    Questions:
What kind or processor speed/cores should i be going for? The quote was for an i7 which i understand to be fairly top of the range
RAM - Would 16GB be enough to handle big video files/editing load
Graphics - Needs to handle my workload and would also like to futureproof for a dual-screen setup - What kind of benchmark should i be aiming for to support that? I won't be gaming on this machine.

I had a MacBook Pro for 9 years 2008-2017. It served me well but when trying to edit 1080p it just didn't have the horsepower to cope with big files and edits.

What kind of budget would you estimate a decent build would cost?

Is it true apple build great machines for video editing (as in the whole package is well put together to support that) or is that all marketing guff?

I’m a novice here, any help or advice really appreciated.

    I would recommend a Ryzen 7 system.

    Do not buy Apple.
They do not build long-term machines any more.

Do you use one yourself or just impressed with the benchmarking?
Realistically, i'm only going to making 1080p videos but i also want to future proof the machine a little.
I'm starting to think i'll have this machine for at least 5 years so perhaps £1500 isn't a ridiculous price.

Self-build; I don't know where would build you a Ryzen 7 2700x machine right now.
Some of these prices seem to be on-sale so can change at a week's notice.

    That's a nice spec!
I have a 4TB NAS drive, so i'd be skipping big storage on the actual machine. However i've heard some of the windows updates can run to 500GB, is that true?
How does it work with the two hard drives - 1) For OS and 2) For storage?

No, Windows updates wouldn't ever run that large. 5Gb at the worst.
Yes, you would install Windows on the SSD & then add drives for storage.

    Normally a few GB, 12Mbps, H.264

Not a heavy workload. You'll get away with a fast quadcore and 8GB, a nice 8 core system will kill it and 16GB will be better. Leaving room for ram expansion would be good.

GPU doesnt matter too much, Mercury acceleration at 1080p isn't a big load.

Dell Outlet can be pretty good for workstations. Presently only have a Precision T5810 on the UK store for £650 ex VAT, IMO a little low on the ladder. Watching there for something a tad more expensive wouldn't be a bad idea IMO.

Thanks for the dell suggestion and other points.
Does the GPU really not matter with image/video editing? I don't plan to do any gaming on the PC, but i wouldn't mind a dual-monitor setup (1080p) at some stage.

Im editing on a 7870, a midrange card from 2012. Dual monitor.

Can i ask what you'd add to this spec to make it a better system for up to £1000

Bumping to 16GB and a slightly better CPU if possible. They offer all the way up to a E5-2697 v4 which Dell charge €1500 extra for. You might get a 6c/8c in budget if you're lucky.

Look at Cinebench scores to see what matters. My silly rig is 2300CB in R15. My laptop is 210CB. The T5810 above is about 490CB which is enough but you could try for more like 800-1000CB for faster renders.

With all this once you have enough power then editing is the same speed and the only benefit is rendering for export. For some users that matters, others are happy to have a cuppa while it churns away.

Though i'd come back to this group as i'm still to make a decision.
I've been offered two machines below, 1 is second hand, 2 is brand new (without screen)
Just a reminder, i'm looking for a machine to do video edits - Projects normally a few GB, 12Mbps, H.264codec.
      1 2
    Processor i5 4460 (6703) i5-7500 (8083)
MotherBoard Asus B85m-G Asus Prime Z270-P
    RAM 24GB DDR3 (2*8GB Corsair 2*4GB Kingston) 8GB - DDR4 (2*4GB Corsair)
Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GT720 (662) Nvidia GeForce GT710 (563)
HD 950gb HDD 250GB WD SSD
    OS Win 7 Professional 10 Home 64bit
    Monitor 24" Samsung -
    Wireless Keyboard/Mouse Included -
    Price £450 £736

Which would you recommend? I'm tempted towards the 2nd hand option (Number 1) given it's only £400 and includes a monitor....

Where are these prices coming from? That 'new' one is absolutely dreadful value.

If you are willing to buy 2nd hand, you get a pretty great deal on Ebay on an old workstation that would kill either for about the same price as the first.

The new quote came from pcspecialist.co.uk - Is there somewhere else you'd recommend for a new build and better value?
Re Ebay - Any chance you could link me to some good value listings?

Seems strange as a quick look at customizing options on PCS and I can a configure a very decent 6-core Ryzen 2600 build with 16GB DDR4, 250GBSSD/1TB HDD with an Nvidia GT1030 for €900 delivered to Ireland.

If you just install Windows yourself (very easy and can be used free forever) it's just €800 delivered.

£736 for that old i5 option with 8GB ram and rubbish GPU seems way off.

Don't have time now to link on Ebay but will later.

You were spot on, that quote was a total rip off. Strange and poor service from PCS - I got that quote over the phone with them.

This refurbed dell is coming in about £200 cheaper than doing the same machine on PCSpecialist -

    Inspiron 5675 Desktop
    • Inspiron 5675 Desktop
    • Processor: AMD Ryzen(TM) 7 1700X  (8C, 3.4GHz, 20MB Cache, 95W)
    • Windows 10 Home (64bit)
    • 16GB (1X16GB) 2400MHz DDR4 UDIMM Non-ECC
    • 1 TB SATA3 512E Hard Drive (7200RPM)
    • 256 GB Solid State Hard Drive
    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB GDDR5
    • Software
    • Dell Wireless 1820 Card (802.11AC Dual-Band Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.1)
    • Air cooler heatsink 95W CPU
    • Bracket
    • Dell 105 Key USB Keyboard Black
Again i'm totally ignorant here - Do Dell build decent machines now? I know they've been at it for a while.

That should be fine, even if the 1060 doesn't have the best cooler it's still a 6Gb variant (i.e. the better one).
Should last you a good few years.

*edit* for £659 it's a BARGAIN, get it!
