I know it's been said before, but how in the name of god did George Lee end up as Science correspondent?? His background is economics, how does RTE overlook the many better qualified people in their own works canteen for someone who hasn't opened a science book since his leaving cert.

He's still on the naughty step after running for FG in the dail. The whiney sad voice is getting plenty of practice these days.

As I said before, during the floods last year,
He was reporting from a farm in county Roscommon, up to his knees in cowsh:te.
I think he went whinging to D4forbs to get him the hell out of there!

We certainly don't need two orchestras when they rarely move outside the M50.

One is supposed to be heading to the NCH, but ... that gives RTÉ about €7.5m extra in funding.

RTE having the orchestras under it's wing is only an accounting exercise.

The real question is, do we want the orchestras?

Whether one goes to NCH or not won't save the tax payer any money.

Even though I don't go to hear them I think it is a good thing to have them and don't begrudge them their funding.

Bit harsh but I'd say many would agree with you.
On the other hand maybe a bit of culture is worth supporting.
In the greater scheme of things it's not a lot of money.

Not sure if it’s an accounting exercise, RTÉ are required to provide them.

My issue would be more like if perhaps if RTÉ decided the concert orchestra was in need of a new logo!!! They’d never waste time and money on a new logo for the CO ... right?

Why should the taxpayer pay for a so called RTE " National " orchestra when they rarely play outside the national concert hall

RTE added the "National" tag in order to get state funding for what is in effect the RTE orchestra.

My point was that Ireland Inc. needs to decide do we want the orchestras or not.

There is no need for their fate to be tied to RTE's fortunes.

If we want them we have to pay for them.

    Why two Orchestras?

    Why two Orchestras?

Ones a 'symphony', the others a 'concert'.

I'm not that musical but I'd guess there are differences. .

They cover different genres of music.
    The Symphony is classical.
The Concert is more varied doing jazz, popular music etc.

They dropped National from the CO, NSO is National as it’s home is mainly in the NCH one of the reasons to merge the NSO & NCH.

I think the argument about either Orchestra has little to do with RTÉ looking for more money as they are both statutory, up to legislators to move them out of RTÉ and if we should continue to have them. Meanwhile they remain part of RTÉ. We can’t blame RTÉ for their existence.

What's wrong with an Orchestra anyway ? we don't have enough!

I'd rather an Orchestra playing proper music than listen to over paid DJ's.

Nobody would have a problem with them if they actually played outside of Dublin. And then trying to get tickets is impossible.

They only want to play in Dublin so let the Dubliners pay for them.

Get the Dublin people to pay for something?

Good God-you'd have more luck finding a leprechaun's crock of Gold.

I was surprised she went into interview with Vincent Brown apparently not knowing anything about his hatchet job style.

Pop music in general today is dire and Eurovision became part of that.It also became a platform for agendas and the outrageous and was allowed to do so.

Based on what elderly relatives tell me auld Vinny used to have a show at 2200 RTÉ 1 radio, himself and a dude called Sean Ardagh used to ‘josh’ with each other and a few lefties.

All gentle ribbing usually, it’s said, then some poor coin of a (usually)FG councillor would be engaged and set upon by ‘pack’ and torn to bits while the host sat back and sniggered.

That’s what I was told anyway, may not be true, but the Dana interview seems kind of similar.

Must try to dig it up.
