Slightly off topic but I recently watched an episode of Seinfeld on all4. The picture was perfect, or as perfect as it could be for something that was made in the 90s. Then I watched the next episode on RTE player (Same device. Same TV) and I'd say it was in 480i. There were pixels everywhere. You might get away with it on a tablet or phone but it was a disgrace on a 43in TV.

As for the ads I never look at them. Let the dog out, Make tea or find something else to do while they're on.

Oddly enough, it's the lack of ads I'm exercised by. It's not that I want to watch ads but seeing the Fann Linn screen while Dee Forbes plays an béal bocht is bad for my blood pressure.

    I'm still mystified.

During the worst of the virus early on RTE had hardly any ads on radio and tv bar ads for their own shows
Other stations seemed to have plenty so likely the cost

The lack of ads was going on long before pandemic.

Sorry just to point out that TG4 are a separate entity, and that screen is a strange one I agree. Anyone want to email info@rte.ie to see if they will reply for answer on that :)

I was watching the live stream of RTÉ ONE the other night and noticed it didn't carry ads during the programmes is their a reason for this?

I would but I is in their bad books lol

    Thanks Elmo.

I'm using Fann Linn as shorthand. RTE 1/2 use "Programme Resumes Shortly" but also I think use Fann Linn sometimes.

Perhaps they like to advertise their inability to perform basic commercial functions like selling advertising space in both official languages

Asking RTE directly is a good idea that I've never really thought of because I assumed I wouldn't get a sensible answer.

I once emailed met eireann to ask why their daily forecast summary ("Cloudy"/"Heavy Rain"/"Sunny" etc) was sometimes at odds with the hourly forecasts they published (e.g. forecast summary saying "Cloudy" when the hourly forecasts was predicting rain during 16 of the 24 hours in the day). The answer I got, if I understood it right, was along the lines of "Well, we get the data from different sources!".

    This is what will happen

    1. They won't reply
    2. They'll tell you its because of copy-right reasons. :D

    Ensemble forecasting :)

    :)

Maybe we should all email our guesses for upcoming weather and we could have Big Data Forcecasting

Actually I don't like to be too critical of Met Eireann because they do a good job.
As do RTE in the main (big salaries, canteen recruiting of guests etc excepted).

FWIW, I think Met Éireann do a good job too.

Ensemble forecasting is actually a real thing, btw

They usually have plenty of RTE show promotions they put on during ad slots, is there only so many of them they are allowed show an hour?

Or they can do what they used to in the 80s when they had a few minutes of schedule to fill. Put on surreal Czechoslovakian cartoons.

Reading the main Covid thread, it sounded like there was some sort of orgy of bad news going on at RTE last night when they announced Level 5 restrictions.
Do you know when you hear the warning on Sky Atlantic and other channels about the content of a program e.g. "The following program may contain scenes that some viewers might find distressing". This warning should be compulsory on all RTE news and current affairs going forward, but with the added warning of "exuberant negativity".

As the timer ticked down to the 7 a.m news on RTE's Morning Ireland this morning, the announcer gleefully announced at the start of the news: "Welcome to Level 5 restrictions".
What in the fluck is wrong with these people? "Welcome" to Level 5?
For everyone's mental health in the next 6 weeks, I would advise people to ignore RTE altogether.

I wouldn’t listen to Liveline then if I were you! Or watch The Late Late Show.

    Believe you me, I don't.
Not only due to the content of these 2 programs, but due to both hosts being appallingly poor quality and extremely difficult to listen to.

Broadcasters can air as many promos as they want in an hour, the are limited to the number of ads they can air.

They constantly remind me of David McSavage's Joe Duffy impression, where he gets great satisfaction from misery. The media class has always loved fear porn, and they simply don't care about the societal impact. There's always a crisis to sell to the masses.

“The man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than anyone else. You know it is sometimes very pleasant to take offense, isn't it? A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill--he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offense, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it.”- ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

"Warning, this programme contains George Lee" would suffice.

But on a more general note, RTE really need to address their negative attitude to everything. Its not just Covid, but I do think they are loving it, they are going so OTT about it now. They have the cheek to keep going on about mental health and how we can't let it get you down, but they are hammering negativity on every single chance they get.

Sure look at their flagship "entertainment show" every Friday night. Misery, Misery, RTE colleague, someone selling a book, misery, cancer, sick kid. Thats EVERY FECKIN week now for years. They can't push misery enough.

Listen to Tubs radio show, more often than not the person getting interviewed will be someone with a sad story about death, kids illness or cancer.

Then on to LiveLine.....rinse and repeat.

Then on to Darcy, more misery and delivered by a miserable host.

And just to be pedantic, if Morning Ireland started this morning with "Welcome to Level 5", they were wrong, it doesn't start til tomorrow night. But I suppose they just wanted to start our days off with a touch of negativity.

I have often heard mental health experts say to stay away from negative things and people trying to bring you down....so as someone about said, maybe its time to ditch RTE.

Second half just starting in streamed Champions League game. Nary an ad except quick sponsor flash and RTE competition during half time. Apart from analysis "Programme Resumes Shortly" displayed all through half time.

wtf, Dee. PSG v. Man Utd not attracting enough viewers to sell advertising?

    No? Increments.

So we see RTÉ have be given an increase in funding for next year as the NSO move to the NCH. What improvements should we expect? rather than looking at the past.

    Yes Increments.

I think the move to the NCH is a good idea. Should be better for NSO and RTE.

I don't know, do you expect improvements?

As I've said before I would prefer to decide on the overall future of Public Broadcasting before making any major changes.

This is a major change it moves one of RTÉ's brands away from RTÉ. This is part of that over all future. When do you expect a decision on the overall future of public broadcasting/media? in the meantime should RTÉ and TG4 continue on as the are regardless without any improvements?

    Vogue talking about Level 5...

This is where your license fee goes... So important they had to put it on the RTE website...

Not a major change to the core business of broadcasting.

I don't see the point in RTE holding on to the NSO if it can prosper at NCH.

I really don't know at this stage. Would prefer sooner rather than later.

What kind of improvements had you in mind?
