exactly George , be very hard to find good s/h ones in a few years with all this adblue confusion, mate was telling me over in england a few dealers are remapping them before selling on, another bloody expensive thing to go wrong with them. My old man wont touch anything with what he calls glorified piss, the 390t has along road ahead of her yet lol

Well both kerry_cow and cute_george are spot on. My own situation, being the OP and all, is I have the money for a new tractor that myself and the auld lad worked damn hard to pull together over many many years. We've had a bit of luck recently too which helps. So, whether it makes sense or not, it's going to happen. It's a once in a lifetime chance. In fact, it's a once in 3 generation lifetime chance as neither my father nor grandfather could ever buy a new tractor. In fact, in the history of our family, only 1 person bought a new tractor and that was in 1968 when my grand-uncle bought his first, and last tractor - a MF 135 (which is still going today, even though its one owner has passed on). For my own enterprise, dropping the bones of 100k on a new tractor is absolute madness. I know that, the father knows that. Still gonna happen though :D

And your dead right. As it's your money

With the depreciation on the books at least some of it will be going to something you'll get use out of instead of the taxman. Haven't had a new tractor here since the Ford 6600 bought in the early 70's I think. An 8 yr old 7840 bought to replace that and its still here. Have an 86 jcb 412 that does all feeding and loader work. It's getting shook now so will likely be the next to be replaced. Tbh we prob put more hours in the loader than the tractor.
All depends on what stage lads are at in terms of development etc as well as use hopefully will be in a position to buy new at some stage. Other thing is the tractors that would be easier fixed and kept going are now very old, most 20 yr old tractors have electrics etc that won't be as straight forward to sort as cables etc in older machines.
Neighbour upgraded to a newer 412 3 years ago, now it's still 18 yrs old but in that 3 years it's been to the garage more often than my 30 yr old one

    +100 on your post.

In the exact same position myself. Bought a brand new case in 2015. Father or grandfather never bought new. Do I need a new one, absolutely not but I had the money so why not.

Do I regret it - absolutely not. Best thing I ever done and would do it again in the morning.

There's great comfort in a new machine

I find it shocking to see the amount of new kit that has been assembled in dealers yards with the last few years going out to farmers who don't need all these machines .
It all bizzare to me .
What a waste of money .
    Best money you'll spend is o a contractor .
Too many boys wanting toys imo.

The problem is there are a lot of ham-fisted farmers out there wrecking and not maintaining machinery and therefore the second hand market has a lot of rubbish at inflated prices.
If you can make the books work and you're mechanically minded a well kept machine at any age will hold its value.

I don't really see the point in you coming on to a thread about someone looking tractor purchasing advice to piss all over what is obviously a big occasion for him and his father.

Why spend 100k if a 50k yoke will do ?
It just shows bad business decision and poor return on investment .

There is more to it than buying something that "will do". Sure we would all be driving around in 1 litre micras rather than nicer and more comfortable cars if we just got something that would do.

You spend a lot of hours in a tractor and you might as well get the best that you can afford and if you can manage a Fendt you will not regret it.

There is much more to it than this but even if its just wanting a new toy whats wrong with that?

Ah lads ease off on kerry_cow. There's a difference of opinion and thats super duper. I'm in no way upset by anything being said. Oh and the happiness of having something new will soon wear off when ya write the cheque and ya wonder what the hell yer doing! Or the morning you go to use it and something doesn't work. These are the joys of motoring, and if I'm going to be motoring for the next 10/20/30 years, I'm gonna be comfortable doing it!

Now, just have to decide what to get :pac:

While I'm here, an update. Took a JD 6120M out for a few hours Friday. Grand machine. Few nice things on it, few things ya'd never probably use (auto diff/4WD, etc). Was a grand comfy bus with front suspension (none on cab though) and air seat. Air brakes too which I wasn't expecting. Wasn't a fan of the transmission. It has a button for the clutch if ya wanted, but it's very slow to engage after changing ranges. Didn't like the up/down through the power quad with buttons. They seem a bit finiky to be honest. I prefer the lever approach for the power quad. There is also power quad buttons on the loader joystick, and a rocker switch by the lift arm slider. Way to many ways to change gears! Oh, there's an auto function for the power quad too so it will do it for ya, and speed matching when changing ranges. Overall though, a nice tractor, well made and feels good and solid with a fine roomy cab. I'd say it wouldn't be a bad place to spend a day. Deal is done, just need to give the go ahead so I have some thinking. Auld lad is mad for it though cos he'd be able to drive it :D

What is the spec in terms of D/A spools, hitch and tyre options?
    Is that an Ad-Blue engine?

That's fine. Maybe we should have a thread for discussing the pros/cons capital investment in machinery versus bringing in a contrator. It's just that every machinery thread on here has this and it isn't really gotten on any other forums.

It sounds like the op has deal just done.

But anyway what's the verdict on Lindner tractors? Are they popular in Austria?
They have a premium price attached anyhow.

We bought the TS115 new when I had just finished by leaving cert. Best buy ever I think. It is still worth a fair % of its new price, but has done 18 years of troublefree work...

.. and the best thing is that it is still as fresh as the day it was bought and will be good for another 18 years with no issue I think.

Tractors aren't a bad investment compared to cars, the key is to mind them.

One question OP. You are looking at very high spec tractors. Are you confident your dad will be OK driving it?

New tractors are very easy to drive, the Fendt especially are one of the easiest machines you could drive with the vario, no need for clutching or using the brakes (most of the time) etc.

Well, he's more a clutch and lever man as opposed to buttons. Like, he has trouble dealing with the Sky remote a lot of the time :D

Money is an object. My thinking is for 10/15k more, the Fendt is a much nicer machine. And that's all is really in it. Maybe 20k. That's between the 6120M and a 312 Vario. So the notion that Fendt are way higher priced than others isn't ringing true here. A similar spec JD would be the same money or that.

Not sure if yer on about JD, or Fendt, so I'll answer both
    Spools: JD (3), Fendt (4)
Hitch: JD (don't know), Fendt (Bennett Uniglide Pick Up Hitch)
Tyres: Both 540/65R38. JD has 28s on the front, Fendt is 24
    Ad-Blue: Both engines use that.
It sounds like the op has deal just done.
No deal done. Just price agreed. If I'm happy, I just need to let them know and they can get her ready for delivery.

I can show him some bits I hope, but he's 71 so would probably forget and just stick to the Leyland or Dexta!

Just one point to make, make sure to get the extendable hitch on which ever one you end up with, makes picking up trailers much simpler.

I am wondering would the cab suspension also be worth it .Is it the front suspension the tls that is included in the price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭Gawddawggonnit

    1. Price extended warranty across the makes that you’re interested in.

    2. Ask for, in writing, trade-in value after 3yrs (3k hrs) and 5yrs (5k hrs) for equivalent model.

Usually separates the men from the boys...

Yip, I noticed that - don't be on it much though. No reason as to why there can't be a discussion of it here suited to us.
The finances of farming and the viability of any expenditure is a massive part of modern farming and probably deserves more consideration.

Not looking for exact prices but surely 120hp tractor and loader couldn't be anything near 100k are they?

Well when you take the price of a 15/20yr old tractor and loader is 20/30k I'd well belive the new ones to be up on 100k. It's a lot of money but if I had it in my back pocket it's a better investment than 100k car or jeep imo

i priced the jd 6125m last year with cab suspension, loader and a few more extras came to €90k .Tls front suspension would surely add a good few more euro

Stick a loader on her then, extra spool valves and wider tyres and your over the 100k

We bought an 8 year old John Deere with 2300 hrs and a loader. It probably didn’t lose an awful lot in depreciation for the owner based on what we paid but still was value for us compared to buying new.
Someone has to buy them new in the first place though!

Why buy mince when you can get steak! Out of interest what was the driver for the Fendt, No doubt you could have got a new MF/JD etc for probably the same. Was it the Vario that was the key selling point for you? Did you know where it previously came from?

low hours ,full service history, the same lad serviced it from day 1, mint tractor inside and out, comfort and the vario is great, my contractor has 1 and just after getting out of his now,55kph holy christ its fast. my one had no vat so brought it into my pay scale.
