Had a conversation with Mr Faith where we were reminiscing about sweets that you'd always find at someone's hospital bedside many years ago. One was the box of 'soft fruit jellies' - they were very soft in texture, came in a box and had an insert to keep them all separated (like a box of Milk Tray or something). Can anyone remember the brand?

Were they not Oatfield? Same ones did bags of jellies.
In a sort of beige box with pictures of the jellies on it.

I sort of remember these... and a quick image search brought up this. Which is probably not at all what you were thinking of!

Yes, I think they were Oatfield! I couldn't find a picture of the box I remembered when I just searched "soft fruit jellies", but I think these were them:

Yup that's them - they're still around - usually around Christmas. I got them in Supervalu just Christmas gone, a fiver a box :)

Yep Oatfield were what I was going to say. You can get them in bags too and they are delicious. So soft and fruity.

I think Lemons may have done some too - Orchard jellies?

I remember those, I think they used to be made by Terry's, hence the York name?

Not sure who made them but I definitely remember them coming in a box called Juicy Jellies. Same as the ones in bags now but looked much fancier in the box!

Mr. Dizzy has a box of Orchard Jellies here since Christmas, they've only lasted this long because I don't like them. It's not the flavour, it's the texture - they're very soft.

Here's a shot of the inside of the box - I guess the green ones aren't so nice :pac:

Eurogiant does a really good bag of soft jellies. I have no idea what the brand is, but they're proper soft jellies!

Dizzy, I can’t stand the texture either! I was remembering them in an unpleasant way :)

I'm another one that hates the texture, it's just wrong. Like biting through something tht should be hard but your teeth are able to melt it or something. It's weird!! I did get around it as a kid by freezing them though :D

Yes - the sugar scraping your teeth!

    :(

I feel the same about fudge. I expect the resistance of toffee or firm caramel, and it ends up being like biting into sugary butter

YES! Nobody else in the family understands why I dislike fudge but it's just deceiving sweetness. I don't mind scottish tablet though, which is quite similar, maybe a bit chalkier.

I love soft fruit jellies, my grandad always had them. Jesus, I’d destroy a box of those right now.

3rding the fudge hate - it's like toffee gone wrong

Me too regarding the fudge, but I find Scottish tablet just as bad. None of them come close to the horror of the soft jellies though.

Orchard jellies are wonderful! This thread had me tempted to go out and buy a (few) bag(s)

(so is fudge, proper super smooth fudge, better than the crumbly stuff)

These jellies always remind me of my dad! He loves them! Also, for the record- fudge, not the cheapo stuff you'd get in the pick and mix, is amazing!! 'Man of Aran fudge' in particular is lovely!:D

Is there any source for jellies like the Meltis Berry Fruit jellies - soft with a liquid filling? I tried the Oatfield at Christmas but they're fairly artificial and not particularly soft.

    Ideally with real fruit flavours.
Brown Thomas in Grafton St. had some lovely ones but v.pricey.

Next time I'm in Dublin I'll check Leonidas.

Old thread, but let's see if there's anyone still following.

    I LOVE the grainy textures!

Creamy fudge is just like...too-thick sauce, or something: yes, like butter: almost slimy.

I prefer the faint resistance of minute sugary/nutty crystals in their caramelised matrix.

The York Fruits likewise - part of their charm is the thick crunchy outside crust of sweet sugar, giving way to the softer, citrussy, juices-flowing jelly interior.

    Mmm, confectionery porn....

I had an uncle who would not eat green sweets - the box of Orchard jellies with the green ones left reminded me. I never got an explanation at the time, it was something to do with the colour rather than the taste. I think it was possibly a left over from the Victorian practise of dying things green with an arsenic based dye - fabrics, wallpaper, even food, which people absorbed through swallowing, breathing or contact with skin. Its a really interesting story.
