Stage 5 today again on the lumpy bumpy reads of Sicily. Froome lost time yesterday and the gaps at the top are still to close for comfort. Possibly the last day in pink for Ronan Dennis as Etna looms tomorrow.

    Technical Overview:
Another nervous stage, on the same kind of roads as the previous one. Starting from Agrigento, the peloton will first travel through a long stretch of 60 km along the coast before heading back to the countryside for a lot of (easy) climbing and descending. The first climb of the day is S.Margherita di Belice (GPM4, 2.8 km at 4.3%), after which a longer descent will lead straight to a second climb, Partanna (GPM4, 9.2 km at 3.7%), still very easy. After its very fast descent and 7 km flat, the pack will hit the last categorized climb of the stage, Poggioreale Vecchia (GPM4, 4.7 km at 5.4%). The official numbers only refer to its second ramp, after Poggioreale, but also the ramp before is comparable and comes almost attached to it. Considering both ramps, it is kind of a serious climb. It is followed, after just a short descent, by another irregular ramp measuring 4.4 km at 3.8%. It tops at around 12 to go, most of which are descending towards the finishing town. The last 2.1 km are very interesting, featuring a 1.3 km at 6.1% climb that starts with around 800m at 8-9%, before flattening out. The last 800m are mostly false flat, descending and ascending up to the finishing line

Sam Bennet being talked up for today on Eurosport. Fingers crossed for him but not sure after the effort he put in yesterday.

    From Cyclingnews ticker:
Today is the seventh anniversary of the death of Wouter Weylandt. The Belgian tragically died on stage 3 of the 2011 Giro after crashing on the descent of the Passo del Bocco near Genoa.
Weylandt was dossard number 108, and the number has never been used since in the Giro. At the start this morning, the 108 space on the signature board was filled with the words Sempre con noi - 'Always with us'.

    RIP WW

No not enough points on offer today. Leader is on 11 I think they said and only a max of 9 on the stage today.

    Not by my calculation.

3 points for Cat. 4, so 9 in total if he won all three climbs today.

Enrico Barbin, current KOM leader, has 11 points.

Thats usually the case but you're right there is commentary on that feed. Now them coming back from ads today and the commentary being mid sentence makes sense.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,254 ✭✭✭MPFGLB

Not sure any time lost by principasl except MAL

    but not certain

Froome and Dennis went backwards on the climb so tomorrow should be interesting

I thought ES were saying Froome was losing time that gaps had formed.

No split in the top 43 finishers they all got the same time, Lopez and Sanchez lost 43.
