Repairing or replacing Georgian shutters and window boxes

    Hi There

I have a house with beautiful Georgian shutters and boxes which hold them. The problem is that behind them there is very little between the house and the elements. We need to insulate behind them which means they need to be taken down, repaired and put back up.

I’ve spoken to some joiners who say they can’t quote for the work as it’s impossible to say how long it will take. One alternative to the repair is to have replicas made and put up but again, this is very expensive and difficult to quote for.

Would anyone have any advice on who I should speak to about something like this? I have spoken to two joiners so far (both window specialists) who were more interested in quoting for the windows than repairing the shutters etc.

I’m based in dublin and mostly using google for a resource. Would anyone know who I should search for and any other advice for my situation?

    Thanks

You need to post up some pictures, so as the particular task can be assessed.

I am assuming this is not a listed building. If it was you would need permission for this work,

and you would be directed as to the scope of works required to give a correct result.

Its a tricky one to quote for, as you are requesting pricing for an area below the shutters that is hidden.
In effect its asking how long is a piece of string.

Repair versus replacement, again is awkward to ascertain as the work unfolds in a restoration, so too do new elements
to be considered. Often a restoration of a part can way exceed what a replacement would cost.

Pics please. And maybe a full brief of the work required, and leave nothing out.
