My Daughter works for a very large betting company, in resent times they have introduced a system of where a person has to work in the shop on their own, which means no lunch break and not very comfortable toilet breaks , in this day and age is this kind of treatment allowed? the male members of staff seem to be quiet happy with this arrangement but the girls are finding it a bit difficult, are people not entitled to a lunch break+toilet breaks if and when needed--she finds the customers always have a comment to make when she returns from a toilet break. anyone any comments on this?

    Rests and intervals at work.
12.—(1) An employer shall not require an employee to work for a period of more than 4 hours and 30 minutes without allowing him or her a break of at least 15 minutes.

    (2) An employer shall not require an employee to work for a period of more than 6 hours without allowing him or her a break of at least 30 minutes; such a break may include the break referred to in subsection (1).

    (3) The Minister may by regulations provide, as respects a specified class or classes of employee, that the minimum duration of the break to be allowed to such an employee under subsection (2) shall be more than 30 minutes (but not more than 1 hour).

    (4) A break allowed to an employee at the end of the working day shall not be regarded as satisfying the requirement contained in subsection (1) or (2).

thanks for that --it's very hard to fight your cornor when some of the staff are happy enough to carry on

Raise a grievance and see where it goes. For health and safety it's not a good idea leaving staff on their own for any length of time.

A lot of places only have one member of Staff on duty at one time these days. Have worked in a few like that. Not sure if two is supposed to be the minimum or if that's in the past now or if it's a myth. It is very hard alright. You're entitled to your Breaks. I have a load of Signs made! And no-one will tell me to take them down! Lock the place up and go on your entitled Break! Back in 5 minutes. Back in Half-hour. Whatever it may be.... Customers are always going to have something to say about something! Whether it's seeing ya coming back from a Break or whatever! Learn to take it with a pinch of Salt because they're going to complain about something else anyway!

Must be one of the worst places to work, a bookies.

The big firms don't give a sh!te about their staff, just fleecing mugs and addicts for whatever they can get off them.
