It’s a lot better than 3 injuries and no points, that’s for sure.

So Lovren not ready Ragnar and Matip out Gomez has a knock and Fab has a knock as well.

Who partners VVD if none of them make it.

Or do we go three at the back with.....

Ah c'mere. United aren't even on our level these days. It's City which is the primary concern, but even they won't be able to live with our explosive dynamism. Do they still have Otamendi and Kompany at CB? lol.

    Didn't they finish above us?
We no doubt play more entertaining football but Utd, us & spurs are at the same level ish based on last season with city abit ahead.

Our new signings have proved zero for us. Can't believe so many are writing off/negative on United this year, their squad is stacked full of talent, they were supposedly poor last year but still finished 6pts clear of us and got to the FA Cup final. Think there'll only be a few points between us and them come seasons end with either being able to finish above the other.

Jose has proved over the years it doesn't matter how decisively ugly their football is once they are picking up the points they are happy out and he'll never change. His recipe for winning leagues is do not lose to rivals (which makes him look ultra negative towards winning some matches v City/Liverpool/Chelsea - he goes at Arsenal/Spurs cos he knows they'll wilt under pressure) and to pick up points against the rest. Usually it bears fruit ... only difference is last season City managed to completely outscore everyone and were on a different level.

If we are to go ahead of them this year, United and not City btw - we'll not only need to outscore teams which we will, we also need to be ugly and downright ****ing miserable at the back when winning - or solid enough to hold a 1 nil when we are up against the typical 11 men behind the ball at home especially - and be way more patient when 0-0.

City moved the flag last season with their ability to win 18-20 games. Remember we were 25 odd points behind.

We'll close the gap this season, but i'd not be getting too concerned with the 2 Manchester clubs for now and be just concentrating on our own results game by game.

If we don't win by at least 4 goals tomorrow Klopp should go. The season will be over if we fail.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,977 ✭✭✭HandsomeBob

Not expecting too much from this season would be happy with a cup run and top 4. Squad still needs development, mainly being once we clear out the sick notes at the back we'll be looking the business. No other top team in the league have this problem.

Really looking forward to the season.

Gonna book flights to go back to Europe for the open top bus parade in May.

    Never felt so confident.

However, if we lose VVD at any stage due to injury or suspension then we are royally fooked.

He is the one player we can’t replace. I do wish we had bought another top quality centre back.

Dont post here often but I can't believe how some fans here and on other media as well are writing off united.

We finished fourth last year behind both spurs and united yet some fans think we are going to be the only team to challenge city for the title?

Yes we have done some good business in the summer but all our new signings have to settle and prove themselves with us, pre season means nothing...

Really hope we kick on this year but a title challenge can only be a bonus, top 4 and a decent go at a cup is all we can really expect.

    Totally agree.

My minimum is finish top 4, have a good run in Europe and have a domestic cup run. All while scoring loads of goals.

Thats my minimum hope. I obviously hope we win something but i would be happy with the above.

There are also people tipping them for a title challenge this season. Stupid posts all around us, easier to just focus on our own team and let the chips fall where they may. Can’t fcuking wait for tomorrow, it’s like Christmas Eve! :D

We're annoyed that every game has not kicked off at the same time so it feels like Utds narrow win has stolen a march and the usual "we'll fvck it up" fear and panic. A win any win on Sunday afternoon and we'll all calm down :)

They finished 2nd last year fine, they only got one first teamer in ..Fred. most other teams have changed a few,so it's not like for like and they automatically finish 2nd again ..they are playing different teams this season by n large, but they remain much the same,it will be much easier for others to know what's coming then it will be for utd playing against new teams. It's a important fact for all clubs, unless your class anyway
I.e city..then you have to change to try catch them. And each clubs ambition is to go at least one better then the previous season right!.

If they come 2nd again this year without investment in first team in January I'll be very surprised.

I don't get some posters saying here with the likes off "if we finished 4th and had a good run in Europe I'd be happy".

That's what we done last year but this season our squad is far stronger whilst a few other squads around us have basically stayed the same.

Surely we can expect an improvement this season other wise what's the point.

For me I would only be satisfied with at least 2nd place and 1 cup win, am I allowed to expect this or am I delusional

That's my thinking too, I reckon Man City will stroll to the title again so 2nd/best of the rest is the aim, for now anyway.
We badly need to win something too, even the league cup would do.

Up and down like a jockeys bollox in anticipation for tomorrow. Load of bollox having to wait while United and Spurs are up and running.

I was watching Gary Neville’s gogglebox type show last night where he was sitting with Scholes watching old games of them both. United’s biggest title challanging rivals for the most of SAF years were arsenal and Chelsea. And yet the biggest games for the players, the manager and the fans was always Liverpool. There is just something special with united and pool that doesn’t exist with other rivalries IMO.

I look to see where the Liverpool game is when fixtures are announced cause there really is nothing more satisfying then beating pool. While there are really toxic elements of the pool v united rivalry there are also really healthy respectful elements.

There’s a lot in common with both clubs . Both suffering tragedies and rising from the ashes of pain to be better clubs. Both trying to use success to build success (not getting steroid cash injections from sugar daddies). Both with exceptional history’s that can only be admired. Both suffering from limitations set by quite toxic American owners. Both sets of fans want to see their teams play a positive brand of football.

Deep down I think most of the fan base have a grudging respect for each other. A part of me would prefer to see Liverpool win the league over city but then the “yeh bit their fans would be painful to listen to” other half takes over!!! :D

Some weird stuff going on with Lovren, an interview has been published in which he says he's crocked, played through pain at WC and is now hardly able to get in and out of a car needs to see specialist etc and yet he's been on holiday swimming (pix posted on social meeja) been back to Melwood and doing the usual full training in new bovver boy haircut

Just reading Achterberg scouted Alisson when he was still playing at Internacional and recommended him however the club were unable to sign him when he moved to Italy due to work permit issues.

What do you honestly think are realistic expectations and what do you think that Liverpool could potentially achieve?

Like if Liverpool played the same exciting football as last season but had a similar season (top three - later stages on Knockout CL) would you be ok with that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,465 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

West Ham have new manager, ten new signings, they will be something unpredictable tomorrow. Will be different for sure, anything possible from them.

I'd take another swashbuckler to 4th and another crack at a champions league final rather than bore our way to 2nd and no final , Everytime.

It seems people are happy for us to become to new arsenal by celebrating 4th spot every season bar the past few.

We spent hundreds of millions (everyone ease stfu about net spend), have the best player in the league, addressed our problem areas recently with alisson, van dijk & strengthened our midfield. If we aren't challenging for the title and other trophies then we have failed.

4th spot is only a success if you haven't been getting CL for a few seasons.

*Regarding the united talk. I think they'll be next and next with us. I do however think we will edge them for 2nd place.*

It appears Lovren has been keeping his injury a secret from the club,

from https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/dejan-lovren-facing-spell-sidelines-15017639 quoting Croatian interview source.
Dejan Lovren is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after admitting Liverpool are “not happy” he has returned from the World Cup with an injury.

Lovren is suffering from a stomach complaint and has not yet taken part in full training after returning to Melwood last Monday having helped Croatia to the World Cup final in Russia.

The centre-back, who sat out Liverpool's final session on Saturday ahead of Sunday's Premier League opener at home to West Ham United, will visit a specialist in Holland to assess the problem, which forced him to play through the pain barrier during the World Cup final defeat to France last month.

“I cannot train at all because of stomach muscle issues,” said Lovren. “I am suffering a lot of pain and will see a specialist doctor in the Netherlands.

“When did I start to feel it? I felt it during the World Cup. I played with pain and those three games killed me. But who wouldn't play for Croatia at such a big tournament!

“After the World Cup finished, the pain increased. I can't even sit in my car without feeling it and to get out of the car hurts like hell!

“I'd always grit my teeth and play for Croatia, but now I am paying the price. But no price is too high for what we achieved in Russia.”

Asked about Liverpool's reaction to the injury, Lovren – speaking to Croatian news outlet Sportske Novosti – said: “Of course, they are not happy.

    “I haven’t trained since I returned from holiday. I can't.

“I'll reassess things after seeing the doctor in Netherlands. I have to deal with that for now and believe it will be okay.

“I hoped it would pass during my holiday, but it didn't. As I went for a swim, it hurt. I couldn't even rest normally.”

Lovren finished last season strongly and was Liverpool's man of the match in their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

And of his Anfield future, the 29-year-old said: “Where would I go from Liverpool? It is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I am too happy here to move.

So would I to be honest.

Do you think that the board and managers targets and priorities line up?

It’s easy for me to go down a narrative of “united board don’t know what they are doing” , particularly when it looks like the Liverpool project looks quite unified but I don’t know what the story is with how Liverpool is being run.

Is it out of order to post the question as to why he didn't seek treatment straight after the final?

“I hoped it would pass during my holiday, but it didn't. As I went for a swim, it hurt. I couldn't even rest normally.”

I think he'll get binned maybe in mid-season if I'm reading the story correctly. Keeping an injury a secret is deleterious for squad preparation.

As for tomorrow I'd not be shocked if Milner or Grujic played beside VVD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,926 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Ah sure when you carry your two teams to the two biggest final games in football all by yourself you are bound to be injured by all that weight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,983 ✭✭✭✭NukaCola

Its incredibly unprofessional for Lovren not to disclose this, I'd be fuming if I were Klopp. All of our CB's apart from VVD have issues with picking up injuries. Probably the next area to be looked at.

I'd be hoping Gomez can come in stay injury free and make that spot his own, not sure how likely that is though.

Is Gomez out with an injury? Philips might start if Matip/Lovren/Klaven/Gomez are out, horrible run of injuries at CB.

Think the other night was just a precaution 'cos he had a tight muscle so could start. Lovren keeping an injury secret for three weeks is simply not on, hope he recovers - from the kicking he should get for that carry on
