If finals were over 2 legs he'd have won them all. Klopps style of play is easily thwarted in an important game like a final.
It's simply a case of don't let them score, and then hit them. If we played United and Jose in 10 finals we'd lose them all.

The source of my information isn't in the public domain.

The media sensationalised the story of a meeting between the club and the contractor on Monday triggering the decision to have the use of Wembley extended. However the updated statement from the club hints at how long they have been aware of the need.

Tottenham Stadium Update (14 Aug 2018)
We should also like to clarify the correct context of the news that broke yesterday regarding arrangements with Wembley. The option was in fact exercised at the end of last year – and not in response to this issue – as a sensible back-up given the nature of construction and the possibility of exactly such an issue arising.

The completion date for the project was overly ambitious to say the least.

To be fair, in a lot of those Klopp finals, he has had massive strokes of bad luck.

2018: Karius howlers, coupled with injuries pre game & Salah in-game
2016: Capitulation against Sevilla from Moreno, coupled with the the awful refereeing decisions at 1-0
2016: Lost on penalties to a much better Man City team, with added goalkeeping error.

From the top of my head, at Dortmund

2013: Injuries to big players / opposition announcing they are signing your main man. Lost to a last minute final. Massive underdogs.

There was another couple of final losses to Bayern while being underdogs and last minute goals / extra time defeats iirc.

Also the run to the final was a more solid defensive partnership between Sahko and Lovren. Before the final Sahko got banned for that stupid doping issue that after missing the Europa League final and the European Championships got found as not guilty.

I think if we had started that final with Sahko and Lovren continuing their run of good performances we would have been a lot stronger in that game.

Klopp must be happy enough with Gomez and Phillips.

Klopp must be happy enough with Gomez and Phillips.

Good that he's happy to give them a chance, I guess.

I'm a little wary of the injury-prone nature of our CBs so selling Klavan makes me a little nervous but can't stand in the way of him wanting to play regularly.

TBH, I was hoping we'd move to upgrade Matip this summer for someone more sturdy. At least we get to see more of Gomez though.

And maybe Masterson after he recovers from his injury? Either that or Gini really impressed Klopp last season in that one game at CB!

I guess I can't complain about our young defenders being given a chance given I wanted more chances for our young attackers.

I do think there's a bit of a difference between throwing someone in at the deep end up front, vs doing it at the back. There's a very different sort of pressure.

We've seen a fair few wilt after relatively promising starts to their Anfield careers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,945 ✭✭✭dogbert27

Also you need luck in Finals even down to the opposition you end playing.

Look who Klopp had in the finals that we played, Sevilla going for 3 Europa Leagues in a row. Real Madrid going for 4 Champions Leagues in a row. 2 teams who already had the experience of knowing what it takes to win the trophies.

    Man City.

These 3 teams versus say Southampton or an Ajax team that are the youngest to ever play in a major final! :pac::pac::pac:

Phillips must be impressing in training as well as in pre season.

I though he wouldn't get many chances at all but he should get a few games this season.

Can Fabinho play CB too ?

Yeah I think so. He was a RB initially. Henderson can fill in too in that position given we have midfield cover now.

Don't see the point of letting Raggy go, dependable back up. We are actually ****ed if VVD gets injured for an extended period.

Liverpool have pulled off a coup by completing the signing of highly-rated Ajax teenager Ki-Jana Hoever.

The 16-year-old full-back had attracted interest from a host of top European clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City.

However, the opportunities given to youngsters by Jurgen Klopp convinced Hoever that Anfield was the right place to continue his development.

As the Netherlands youth international had yet to sign a professional contract in his homeland, Liverpool only have to pay Ajax a nominal compensation fee.

I think Masterson played the 60 minute game the other day. What I've seen so far Philips is the better of the 2.

U23's game against Spurs is being televised by LFCTV tonight, so should be some river based viewing options available on the interweb if waiting until Monday is hard to take... annoying, but seeing as were in a kinda extended pre-season with the late returns from the WC, a few extra days training before an away game against a potential banana skin is no bad thing.

yeah its a pet hate of mine, its the waiting over the weekend while everyone else is playing that annoys me. At least there are only a few Monday games a season.

This will be a tough task at Palace on Monday night, Zaha will be a handful for us. At least the pitch should be in decent knick, I hate playing Palace towards the end of the season cos their pitch is always fcuked by that stage.

Anyone else find it weird that Palace fans always seemed to raise their vocal level if they were on TV?

Anyways, it seems as if the section fans that do create a lot of noise / flags etc for these games are in a dispute with the club and won't be at the game on Monday.

Well Klopp obviously has faith in Phillips and Gomez to fill the role this year. I suspect Liverpool will be in the market for VVD partner next summer though and its probably going to cost them £50-70m

Only copped on the opening day that Andre Schurle went from Dortmund to Fulham pretty cheap. Im surprised we werent in for him, he was always a great impact sub for Chelsea a few years back and usually created a chance or two when he came on. Anyone know did he go downhill or something when he returned to Germany?

Also is it a bit strange that Klopp has only one German in the squad? Its not for a lack of contacts or knowledge of the Bundesliga and there are plenty of German players around who suit his style.

Injuries really hurt his career. He’s still a good footballer but he definitely lost a yard of pace since his Chelsea days. He missed 36 games for Dortmund due to injury and only ended up playing 51 in total, a lot of those coming off the bench.

Liverpool have won the race to sign highly-rated Ajax teenager Ki-Jana Hoever. Just awaiting international clearance before he can make his Academy debut. Clear pathway to the first-team under Klopp key to beating off competition from PL rivals.

    He got that wrong,
looks a bargain in this market. We'd could sell him to Madrid next summer for 110 easily.

It hasn't been for the lack of trying on Klopp's part.

Timo Horn - Didn't want to leave Koln, has stuck with them even after they were relegated. Liverpool signed Karius instead and he in turn has been replaced by Alisson.

Jonas Hector - Didn't want to leave Germany. Liverpool signed some kid from Hull instead.

Leon Goretzka - the Emre Can replacement that chose to join Bayern on a free transfer.

Mario Gotze - chose to return to Dortmund instead of joining Liverpool because he wanted to play in the Champions League.

Julian Draxler - wanted Liverpool to double the value of the contract he was offered, the club said no and he joined PSG.

Julian Brandt - Leverkusen accepted Liverpool's offer. Player wanted to stay in Germany and is rumoured to have agreed to join Bayern next year. Liverpool signed Mo Salah instead.

Max Meyer - had a hissy fit with Schalke wanted to join Bayern and ended up at Crystal Palace.

As alternatives options go Alisson, Robertson and Salah aren't bad. Brandt is the only one I think we are missing out on but it's doubtful that he would have had the same impact as Salah.

Today's presser - liked that when he was asked about Raggy leaving when other CB's are injured, he started with a very direct response that no player would leave unless he allowed it, and then joked 'that's'if' Raggy leaves, so looks like the move has yet to be finalised.

ah right, I hadnt realised Klopp has tried (without success) to sign that many Germans which is why I thought it strange there is only one in the squad. Presumably he still watches a lot of Bundesliga so has his finger on the pulse for the next generation of them coming through.

Last season he was the backup.

They have added to the squad with VVD in and clearly the young lads must also be in Klopp's thoughts.

Klavan was not that good and Klopp is not stupid.

Wasn't there something about an agreement where he wouldn't tap up any former players for a year after he left?
