Can we please sack Setien, we're going backwards with him. The players we have deserve better.

Lazio are 1-0 down at home to Sevilla. Ben Yedder finishes off Sarabia's low cross.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Lo Celso gets the away goal for Betis despite slipping as he took the shot. 2-1. It was coming.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,856 ✭✭✭irishguitarlad

Haha what a pox by lo Celso, I'll take It though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Ben Arfa's done well but he almost cost Rennes there. Lost the ball cheaply and Canales goes close with his shot. Think there's more goals in this for Betis.

And now Lainez goes close. He's looking very lively.

Penalty to Rennes! Sarr clipped as he burst into the box by Guardado. Ref initially didn't give it but the linesman has advised him it was a pen.

    BATE 1 up.

Penalty to Rennes! Sarr clipped as he burst into the box by Guardado. Ref initially didn't give it but the linesman has advised him it was a pen.

Wasn't a penalty though, if you watch the replay. Rennes are cutting us to shreds on the break.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

And Ben Arfa scores from the spot! Rennes lead Betis 3-1. What a first half this has been. Breathtaking stuff. Think there's more drama to come as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Sarr upset that he's unable to continue. Bourigeaud on to replace him. That will hurt Rennes' threat on the counter.

And Canales hits the post! Unlucky. Would have been some goal.

3-2. Sidnei header from a lovely Joaquin set-piece. That was deserved.

Grenier has to be subbed now for Rennes with an injury. Lost two big players now. Jese on for Betis as well.

Lacazette sent off for retaliating for a foul with an elbow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,725 ✭✭✭✭blueser

Brainless by Lacazette there. Ye, he was being fouled. But you just can't go swinging your elbow at your opponent's head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,971 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

    Arsenal lose 1-0

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

3-3. Lainez with a strike in the final seconds of normal time. Cruel on Rennes but Betis deserved it based on their dominance this half.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,856 ✭✭✭irishguitarlad

Yeah, he's been a shining light recently that Lainez.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Yeah, he's been a shining light recently that Lainez.

Been impressed with him. Always eager for the ball and looking to take someone on. Looks a great bit of business.

Full-Time and it ends 3-3. Thought this would be a good game but didn't expect it to be this exciting. Rennes did themselves proud, although I think they needed to go to Spain with a goal. Fancy Betis to do the business comfortably in the return leg.

Surprised Arsenal were beaten away. Sevilla have won away at Lazio 1-0.

    Teams for Celtic vs Valencia:
Celtic XI: Bain; Toljan, Simunovic, Boyata, Izaguirre; Christie, Forrest, McGregor, Burke, Brown; Sinclair.

Valencia XI: Neto; Piccini, Garay, Diakhaby, Lato; Carlos Soler, Kondogbia, Parejo, Wass; Cheryshev, Sobrino.

Going to watch Eintracht's game too. Want to see some goals from Jovic, Rebic or Kostic. Pity Haller is on the bench.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,398 ✭✭✭✭Turtyturd

    BATE 1 up.

You’d expect Arsenal to go through but that’s an embarrassing result for them.

    Disgusting from Lacazette too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Wow another bonkers game. Hinteregger has put Eintracht in front and Shakhtar have a penalty within a minute.

And Marlos scores from the spot. 1-1 with less than ten minutes played.

And now a red card for Shakhtar within seconds of the penalty! Crazy. Stepanenko off. It was the correct decision though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

1-0 Valencia. Looked offside but Izaguirre played Sobrino onside and Cheryshev has a tap-in.

Way too easy for Valencia to get through there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

2-0 Valencia early into the second half. Same two players link up, this time Sobrino the scorer. Celtic in big trouble now.

And Kostic scores for Eintracht Frankfurt to make it 2-1 after a nice ball from Jovic. Very tough for Shakhtar now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Great finish from Taison to help the ten men of Shakhtar equalise. 2-2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

2-2 it ends between Shakhtar and Eintracht Frankfurt. Think the home side will take that given they played most of the game with ten men. Eintracht had chances to win, da Costa wasteful, but I think a draw was fair. This will be a very interesting return leg in Germany. Could go either way.

Celtic have been beaten by 2-0 by Valencia. Chelsea have won 2-1 away to Malmo. Villarreal beat Sporting 1-0 away.

I had lost a but if interest in the Europa League but with Virgin showing all the games I got back into sitting down watching it when I can. Some cracking games there tonight, the Rennes game was brilliant Cup game, same with frankfurt game, mad opening 10 in that. Atmosphere in some of the grounds phenomenal, malmo, rennes, rapid wien. Good night of football.

What would peoples opinions on the new Europa League 2 being ran on a summer schedule. It's give the teams that play that schedule a more genuine chance at a European trophy, and it would also mean significant games during a normally boring summer.

My worry is that it could end up like the Intertoto Cup as something not taken seriously. Maybe two European club competitions is the maximum fans will tolerate? We'll see what happens though.

It will end up exactly like the intertoto but I remember the intertoto bringing some very good games like nantes to cork City. So may not be a bad thing in this country in terms of creating a buzz.

    Sevilla vs Lazio teams:
Sevilla XI: Vaclik; Mercado, Kjaer, Sergi Gomez; Navas, Roque Mesa, Vazquez, Sarabia, Escudero; Andre Silva, Ben Yedder.

Lazio XI: Strakosha; Patric, Acerbi, Radu; Marusic, Cataldi, Badelj, Milinkovic-Savic, Lulic; Caicedo, Immobile.

Lazio are 1-0 down from the first leg. It kicks off at 5pm on BT Sport ESPN and VM Sport Extra 2.

Neither side in great form at the minute but you'd think Sevilla should be able to see the job through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Ben Yedder opens the scoring to make it 2-0 on aggregate. Not great goalkeeping from Strakosha.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Vazquez given a second yellow for Sevilla. He'd been playing well too. Lifeline for Lazio? Thirty minutes remaining. Two goals needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Now Lazio's Marusic sent off for an elbow. So much for the lifeline. 10 vs 10 now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Sarabia makes it 2-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate. Nice pass from Navas. Tie over now. Sevilla going to be the first team into the last 16.

Sevilla and the EL, a match made in heaven.

Assuming we go through tomorrow, theyed be one of three teams I'd be hoping to avoid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Full-Time and Sevilla win 2-0 (3-0 on aggregate). I expected this to be a closer tie when the draw was made. Sevilla very impressive and Sarabia and Ben Yedder stood out. They'll be a tricky side for whoever gets them in the draw. The other three La Liga teams look well placed to join them in the next round too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Some good games coming up just before 6. Going to give Eintracht Frankfurt vs Shakhtar a look since the first leg was fun; 2-2 in the tie at the moment. Also going to keep an eye on Arsenal's game but I suspect they'll turn around the 1-0 deficit and pull clear of BATE before long.
Eintracht Frankfurt XI: Trapp; Abraham, Hinteregger, N'Dicka; Da Costa, Hasebe, Rode, Kostic; Gacinovic; Haller, Jovic.

Shakhtar Donestsk XI: Pyatov; Butko, Khocholava, Matviyenko, Ismaily; Kovalenko, Alan Patrick; Marlos, Taison, Soloman; Moraes.
Arsenal XI: Cech; Lichtsteiner, Mustafi, Koscielny, Kolasinac; Guendouzi, Xhaka; Iwobi, Ozil, Mkhitaryan; Aubameyang.

BATE XI: Scherbitski; Rios, Volkov, Filipenko, Filipovic; Baga, Dragun, Simovic; Milic, Skavysh, Stasevich.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,971 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

Hleb is still playing for Bate (albeit on the bench tonight) Heard a commentator talking about him last week, assumed he was a coach or something...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

    BATE O.G! That was fast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Jovic puts Eintracht Frankfurt ahead with a great finish. He's having a super season.

And now a pen to Eintracht for handball. And Haller sends the keeper the wrong way. He's also having a super season. Looks like the German side are heading to the last 16. 2-0 (4-2 on aggregate).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,725 ✭✭✭✭blueser

That was a nasty challenge by Brown there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

2-0 Arsenal as Mustafi puts Arsenal 2-1 ahead in the tie overall. Wonder will BATE crumble now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Half-Time in the early games. Celtic goalless away to Valencia but they have been reduced to ten men with Toljan given a second yellow. Could be a tough second half in store.

Red Bull Salzburg have overcome their 2-1 deficit to Club Brugge and are winning 3-0 (4-2 on aggregate). Salzburg always seem to produce in this competition.

Sporting Lisbon have gone 1-0 up away to Villarreal just before the break. Tie is now 1-1 on aggregate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Hleb is still playing for Bate (albeit on the bench tonight) Heard a commentator talking about him last week, assumed he was a coach or something...

He's been brought on for the last 30. Gets a nice reception from the Arsenal fans.

And it's 3-0 to Arsenal via Sokratis. 3-1 on aggregate. That should be that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,971 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

Looks like Arsenal are gonna bate Borisov after all. Give them a right good bateing indeed.:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Ooh hang on, Shakhtar just got one back via Junior Moraes. 2-1 now and 4-3 on aggregate. If Shakhtar get another then it's Extra-Time.

Update: Marlos nearly levels the tie with a great strike that hits the crossbar. Eintracht bringing on Rebic. Bundesliga side looking nervous.

Update II: Taison has an effort off the crossbar now! Eintracht on the ropes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,971 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

He's been brought on for the last 30. Gets a nice reception from the Arsenal fans.

Seems he's 37, so not ludicrously ancient. Just sounds like a name from a bygone era, like Igor Biscan popped up in the Europa League in 2019.:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Wow Haller makes it 3-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt! It was all Shakhtar before that and they had hit the woodwork twice but that goal might have killed them off. 5-3 on aggregate. Ten minutes remaining. Great game, this.

Update: 4-1. Rebic puts the icing on the cake with a goal. Love this attacking trio of Haller, Jovic and Rebic. They'll give any team in this competition problems. 6-3 on aggregate now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Full-Time. Eintracht beat Shakhtar 4-1 (6-3 agg.) Great result as Shakhtar are no mugs. Sebastien Haller must be one of the most underrated strikers in Europe. This guy is always contributing to his team. Such an intelligent player. Their attack will be a handful for whoever draws them.

None of the early games have gone to Extra-Time. Villarreal have edged past Sporting Lisbon with a 1-1 draw. (2-1 on aggregate). Zenit beat Fenerbahce 3-1 to advance 3-2 overall.

Valencia beat Celtic 1-0 on the night (3-0 on aggregate). Handy wins for Arsenal, Dinamo Zagreb, Red Bull Salzburg and Napoli as well.

Going to now watch Real Betis vs Rennes which was 3-3 in the first leg.
Real Betis XI: Joel Robles; Mandi, Bartra, Sidnei; Joaquin, Canales, William Carvalho, Lo Celso, Guardado; Jese, Loren.

Rennes XI: Koubek; Traore, Da Silva, Mexer, Bensebaini; Bourigeaud, Grenier; Sarr, Ben Arfa, Niang; Hunou.

Be a hell of a result if Rennes can get through but I see Betis winning well.
