Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The New Saints? When are Barry Town going to get their act together?

With the new format, Uefa more or less telling the smaller nations they are not wanted in the Champions League. A super League without disbanding the National Leagues.

I agree nobody has an interest in the Steaua's or Legia Warsaw's of this world bar their fans but 6 qualifying places up for grabs is fairly ****. Prob bound to be even less in a few years

Next Champions league and Europa league cycle is 2021/24, the way things are going unless the smaller league clubs get together the main cash cow for them will be more opportunities to get into the Europa league and bigger prize money for playing in it, and actually Peter Lawell Celtic CEO came up with the idea of a 64 team group stage.

I always thought Celtic went in later into the qualifying rounds than round 1.

They have added an extra preliminary round that used to be called the 1st round

So instead of 4 rounds there is now 5 with the preliminary round being a semi final and final were the winner will go into the 1st qualifying round

Most of the teams in round 1 started in round 2 in previous years. Round 1 was more or less a preliminary round.

But UEFA have given an extra group spot to the top 3 leagues (Spain, England and Germany), two extra spots to the 4th (Italy) and an extra spot to 5th and 6th (France and Russia). (As an aside, Italy have actually jumped ahead of Germany in the league rankings, but the use the rankings from the end of the season before last when allocating spots for a current season). I believe they did it when England were in danger of losing the fourth spot. Italy probably weren't too happy about only having two group places as well.

This means that there are less group places up for grabs. The top four countries have half of the places themselves. There are only six places up for grabs for the teams in the qualifiers (four champions and two non-champions); there used to be ten (five champions and five non-champions). To allow for this, they've had to push teams back round. One country has lost their automatic group stage spot. All teams outside of the elite countries now have an extra hurdle to qualify. It's made even tougher again, as the latter qualifying rounds are narrower, with bigger teams (PSV and Young Boys) starting there.

It's toughest on middle tier sides - like Celtic, BATE, Apoel - who have turned themselves somewhat regulars in the group stages in recent years. BATE were borderline seeds in the play-offs - now they won't even be seeded in the third round, if they get there.

For the smaller sides - like City, TNS, NI champs etc. - it makes things even tougher. We're likely to never see a CL run like Dundalk in 2016. But they're giving clubs a second bite of the cherry via the EL from the start (you used to have to get to the 3rd round, to parachute in) and it's closed off to just champions, so you avoid the tough 5th, 6th etc. place sides from bigger nations. They're likely to up the prize money, as well. The likes of Celtic, BATE etc. will probably coast into the EL group stages if they miss out, but they'll probably lose out on a good deal of prize money. The extra money in the earlier rounds is likely worth it to the smaller teams to give up their slim chance of CL qualification.

From a purely footballing point of view, it's a bit sad, though. This year, there'll be an equal number of champions as non-champions in the groups (counting Real as champions). They should really drop that "champions" tag, as soon enough, there'll be more non-champions in it.

Where's this being played? Kind of interesting to have a mini tournament like this. Probably very exciting for the clubs involved.

Victoria Stadium in Gibraltar. So the 4G pitch there that should really give Lincoln Red Imps a big advantage

So, one more qualifying round, then the playoffs, before we get to the group stage, yes?

I was impressed by Salzburg in last season's Europa League. Hope they can make the Champions League this time.

There's been a bit of back and forth between Liverpool and Real the last few days. I hope they get each other in the group stages, it might liven them up the groups are boring these days.

Nice to see a rivalry developing there. Feels like proper dislike between clubs is become more of a rarity in the modern game. It was one of the things I loved about United vs Arsenal games when Keane and Vieira were playing. Nowadays you'd be more likely to see United and Arsenal players hugging each other in the tunnel. I don't think we'd see hugs though if Madrid and Liverpool were paired off against each other.

I'm pretty sure Liverpool just made this rivalry up because of what happend to Salah

I doubt very much Real Madrid care half as much as Liverpool about this rivalry.

There's no special rivalry between Liverpool and RM. Would have liked to bring their European domination to an end in the final last year but if Liverpool knocked them out in the group stages I'd be just as happy.
