Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Traore wastes another chance cutting in on his left.

Update: Depay goes close as well with a low curling effort. This game could swing either way.

I rarely watch group stage games and just looked at the scores and all I can think is that there are rigged matches.
Real losing 3-0 at home, Roma beaten by Plzen, and I see that City and Juve are losing games they should be winning.

That's too much oddness on one might.

Or loads of games with nothing to play for with weakened teams out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Ferland Mendy goes very close. Wonder if it's going to be one of those days for Lyon.

I'd stick Ndombele on even if he's not 100 per cent. If Shakhtar get another I think in these conditions it's all over.

Meanwhile Sane equalises for City with a super free-kick.

How did City not score there?!

Traore went close to giving Lyon the lead. Was one on one with keeper Pyatov and the keeper made a nice stop with his leg.

A lot of snow falling in this game. Orange ball is out and orange markings on the field too.

One for the "Things you don't see anymore" thread!

Sane makes it 2-1 after a nice link-up with Sterling.

    FEKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

    Brilliant strike! 1-1.

    Depay assist naturally.

    Ajax player properly mullered there😲

Jaysus that challenge from Muller. Shocking. I know he doesn’t realise the player was there but that was wild.

Muller's red card was fairly rough despite superb puns from the BT Goals show.
Juve are rounding off an embarrassing week for Serie A with arguably the worst result of the lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,247 ✭✭✭✭Guy:Incognito

Watching Tony gale talking about Muller on sky sports and he trotted out the usual " that's what these blades do now, open you up"

Except a quick Google and everything seems to point to Muller wearing Adidas x , which arnt blades.........

I get my legs stood on most weeks playing rugby and studs of all types do plenty of damage.

Some strike from Foden, unlucky not to score

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

Beauty from Dybala. Some pen from Tadic too to put Ajax ahead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Lopes just made a massive save to keep the scores level. Shakhtar finishing this game well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

Dybala again with an unbelievable strike but ruled off as Ronnie was offside and interfering with play

Full-Time and Lyon are through! A gutsy 1-1 draw in dreadful conditions. Delighted for them as they've had a great campaign.

They will make a very difficult opponent for a few group winners.

    Group winners:

    Borussia Dortmund

    Barcelona

    PSG

    Porto

    Bayern Munich

    Manchester City

    Real Madrid

    Juventus

    Group runners-up:

    Atletico Madrid

    Tottenham

    Liverpool

    Schalke

    Ajax

    Lyon

    Roma

    Manchester United

Was that the most predictable group stage EVER ??? I imagine those who finished top were favourites to top the group (maybe Athletico over Dortmund) and those that finished runnes up were most peoples tips to finish same?

    Some tasty ties possible.

Some of the big guns might be fearful of who they get.

Thinking of Madrid in particular. Unless they up their game big time, there's a lot of very tricky ties for them there.

For Man Utd, they better pray they get Porto.

Definitely. I was hugely impressed with them in our two games against them. Our toughest opponents this season so far, without a doubt.

Interesting to see if PSG get better luck under Tuchel than under Emery as the latter got some stinkers in these draws: Barca in 16-17, followed by Real Madrid last season. Both resulting in early exits. The Madrid one was particularly unlucky as PSG had been top seeds, having topped a group that had Bayern in it. :D

Not really, I wouldn't take much heed of the pot seeding anyway. Focus on the teams

Mane got sent of for something similar last year but then there were other ones like it not punished. I can see the arguments either way. It's a harsh red when not intentional/genuinely going for the ball but if left unchecked it would turn into kung-fu football.

There doesn't need to be intention proven. Obviously he wasnt tryin to decapitste him. It was a clear red card. There is no arguments to be had!

fair enough if that's the rule so be it but it doesn't explain why it is not always a red card so

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,050 ✭✭✭✭The Talking Bread

Athere is a case by case discretion to be made (for instance Nani' s red against Bayern was absurd for most people) but Muller's was 100% red. It's too early and depressing commuting on a train to explain the contexts but plenty of reading online.

Liverpool: Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Porto, Real Madrid

Manchester City: Ajax, Atletico Madrid, Roma, Schalke

Manchester United: Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Paris St-Germain, Porto, Real Madrid

Tottenham: Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Paris St-Germain, Porto, Real Madrid.

So i'm assuming we all want Porto, and don't want PSG or Barca? Didn't realise City had such an easy pool of teams to play. Can't see them losing to any of those teams.

Real Madrid are in a right state these days, I think they'd be the 2nd best choice for the runners up.

Everyone that finished 1st will want Utd.

    Utd v Porto, banker.

Lot of people under estimated Roma last year, they got out of a tough group, winning it and then knocked out Barcelona. Be careful what you wish for at this stage.

Citys toughest test would be Atletico but I'd still expect them to steam roll anyone of the teams they could face.

Liverpool and City always get easy draws. PSG tend to get a tough draw. Likely will be:

    Liverpool vs Porto
    Man City vs Schalke
    PSG vs Atletico
    United vs Bayern
    Spurs vs Juve
